New home, new hope for Pitas fire victim

KOTA KINABALU (June 1): The burdens of a woman who lost her husband, daughter, uncle, and home in a fire in Pitas last year were eased with the construction of a new house. Mother of three, Afnah Tundan, 51, beamed with joy after receiving the keys to her new home from Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Pitas deputy chief Datuk Harun Ismail. The house, built next to the site of her original home, was made possible through assistance from the Sabah State Welfare Foundation (YKNS) and several compassionate individuals. Afnah described the support as a great blessing from Allah SWT. 'I am unemployed and rely on my two working daughters to support me and my youngest child who is still in school, so I couldn't afford to build a new house,' she said. 'After the tragedy, I had to stay at a family member's house, but now Allah SWT has answered my prayers through the kindness of noble people who made this new home a reality. I'd like to thank everyone involved, especially Datuk Harun Ismail, for initiating this assistance,' she added during the handover ceremony in Kampung Taka on May 31. Harun, who is also the chief executive officer of the Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC), said approximately RM61,000 was spent on constructing the 500-square-foot house, which began in March. He said YKNS allocated RM30,000 for the project, with the remaining cost covered by concerned individuals as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. The new home includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and basic amenities such as water, electricity, lighting and ceiling fans. 'Afnah's house is now fully ready for her and her children. We hope it brings a new ray of hope to their family,' Harun said. In early August last year, a tragic fire in Kampung Taka claimed the lives of the SK Senaja headmaster, his 12-year-old daughter, and another family member, leaving Afnah without her loved ones and home.

GRS aims for 52 seats, 21 for national allies

Masiung, flanked by party leaders, leads the crowd in chanting 'Hidup GRS!', echoing the unwavering spirit of the coalition's supporters in Kuamut. TONGOD (May 25): Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah known for his rallying slogan 'Tatap Kalaga', has proposed that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) contest at least 52 seats in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. Speaking before an enthusiastic crowd of over 700 supporters during a GRS roadshow at Kampung Mananam yesterday, Masiung said the proposal is in response to the strong grassroots sentiment in favour of local parties. 'Given the clear support shown by Sabahans for local leadership, I would propose that GRS contests 52 seats if agreed upon by the GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The remaining 21 seats can be allocated to national parties that are willing to cooperate with GRS,' he said. Masiung, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president, stressed that GRS has the potential to emerge as the dominant force in the next state government, especially with the opposition previously rejected by the people during their time in power. He added that GRS would exercise greater caution in forging alliances, taking lessons from the failed attempt to topple the state government via the so-called 'Kinabalu Move' in January 2023. Despite the attempt to topple Hajiji's government, GRS retained majority support with backing from Sabah Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional. At present, Masiung noted the working relationship between GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) remains stable and constructive, a partnership he believes should continue as Sabah heads toward the polls. 'If this cooperation between GRS and PH can be maintained, I am confident we have the strength and trust to once again form the Sabah State Government,' he said. The GRS component parties are Gagasan Rakyat, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah STAR, United Sabah National Organisation (Usno), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah. Earlier, Masiung's arrival at the Mananam Polling District Centre (PDM) was celebrated with a heroic welcome by the local Sungai Mangkuling community. The atmosphere was festive, with more than 30 motorcycles parading the GRS flag in a show of grassroots support. The tour was also attended by key leaders of GRS component parties in the Kuamut constituency. In a symbolic gesture, Masiung raised the GRS flag to officially mark the event, standing alongside PBS Division head Masum Takin, PPM representative Tokyo Hasim Omar, and USNO's James Aik.

Sabah polls: GRS eyes 52 seats, 21 to national parties, says Banah

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is expected to field candidates in at least 52 out of the 73 state constituencies in the upcoming 17th state election (PRN17), signalling a strong push by the coalition to retain power. "Given the strong local sentiment towards Sabah-based parties ahead of this election, I foresee us contesting 52 seats, subject to the approval of GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor," said Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice-president Datuk Masiung Banah. "The remaining 21 seats will be allocated to national parties that agree to cooperate with GRS," Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice-president Datuk Masiung Banah told hundreds of attendees at a roadshow in Kampung Mananam, Tenom, on Saturday (May 24). Banah expressed confidence that local candidates under the GRS banner could outperform opposition parties, particularly those previously rejected by voters during their time in government. The Kuamut assemblyman stressed that GRS would be more cautious in forming future alliances, citing the failed power grab attempt during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode in January 2023. Several opposition assemblymen and political leaders from Sabah Barisan Nasional and Parti Warisan, along with defectors who allegedly wanted to align state power, tried to engineer a change of government by persuading elected representatives to switch allegiance and withdraw support from Hajiji. However, the plan failed after Hajiji managed to retain majority support in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, thanks to backing from most GRS component parties, several Sabah Barisan assemblymen, and Sabah Pakatan Harapan, which pledged support for political stability. Banah, meanwhile, stated that the current working relationship between GRS and Sabah Pakatan, both politically and administratively, remains strong and should be maintained. He believes that if the collaboration continues into the upcoming election, the coalition stands a strong chance of forming the Sabah government once again. Earlier, Banah received a warm welcome from the Orang Sungai Making ethnic community at the Mananam District Polling Centre (PDM), accompanied by a convoy of over 30 motorcycles waving GRS flags. The GRS roadshow was attended by all division chiefs from the coalition's component parties in the Kuamut constituency. Apart from Gagasan Rakyat, the other seven GRS component parties are Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah STAR, United Sabah National Organisation (Usno), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah.

Cooperate and develop Sabah without overlooking local rights

Published on: Saturday, May 24, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: Mohammad Bahrin when met by reporters. KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mohammad Bahrin Abd Karim, Chief of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Likas, emphasized the need for all parties to be open-minded and collaborate with national parties to develop Sabah without sidelining the rights of Sabahans. He supports forming consensus within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), although no final decision has been made yet. A proposal for GRS to contest solo in the upcoming state election (PRN-17) was based on grassroots feedback from social media. Gagasan Rakyat Likas has 22 branches with 2,500 members, focusing on recruiting quality members who can contribute actively. Voter demographics in Likas show a majority of Chinese voters, making cooperation with government parties logical. Bahrin also predicts a rise in independent candidates in PRN-17, with hardworking individuals likely to gain more support than party-affiliated candidates. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. Attacks on Chief Minister Hajiji stem from jealousy, says Gagasan's Masiung

KOTA KINABALU: The recent political slander and online attacks against Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor stem from envy over his achievements, says Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Datuk Masiung Banah. He said the opposition, having failed to deliver when in power, is resorting to fabrications and personal attacks on social media to sway public opinion before the 17th State Election. "They are clearly jealous of Hajiji's progress and what the GRS government has accomplished in a short time. This is why they are spreading lies and even hurling insults at our Chief Minister," he said at the Gagasan Rakyat Tri-Annual Meeting in Kampung Saub, a Lundeyah village near Nabawan on Friday (May 23). Banah said that rather than responding with hostility, Gagasan Rakyat members must focus on strengthening grassroots support and maintaining composure in the face of provocation. He urged members to avoid retaliating with slander or insults, stressing the importance of respectful political engagement grounded in facts. "We know our grassroots supporters are affected by the opposition's malicious online campaigns. But we should not stoop to their level," he said. The Kuamut assemblyman also warned against adopting the opposition's toxic cyber trooper culture, which he said thrives on vilification and false narratives. "Supporters must not fall into the trap of conflict. We need to counter these attacks by being more strategic, through facts, engagement, and unity at the grassroots," he added. Banah stressed that true strength lies in growing the party's influence at the community level, not through hostility, but by staying focused on long-term goals.
