Tecno reveals Phantom Ultimate Fold G — a bold challenger to Samsung's foldables

With Samsung's rumored tri-folding Galaxy G Fold missing in action, a new company is throwing its hat into the triple-ring. Tecno just teased its Phantom Ultimate G Fold, which the company claims is the world's thinnest tri-folding phone, measuring 11.49mm folded and 3.49mm opened, less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Of course, the Z Fold 7 is a real phone, while this is a concept. According to Android Central, the hinges on the Phantom Ultimate G Fold are different, with a larger main hinge and a smaller "waterdrop hinge" on the right side. Similar to Samsung's rumored tri-fold, the Phantom concept features a "G-style" inward-folding design with two hinges. This style of fold is designed to protect the interior displays. The conceptual phone is reportedly going to debut at MWC 2026, which typically takes place in February. It is reportedly equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery that powers a 9.94-inch interior display. When it comes to Tecno, its Phantom phones tend to be conceptual and don't actually become reality. Last summer, Tecno teased the Phantom Ultimate 2, another tri-folding device that also featured a "G-style" hinge system. Even if it were to release, neither the G Fold nor the Ultimate 2 are likely to come to the United States, as the phone maker largely sells in China and India. That's after the release of a second-generation Huawei Mate XT tri-fold in September. Huawei released the first tri-folding phone in the Mate XT last fall. We found it amazing, and we're looking forward to the next generation of foldable evolution.

Samsung tri-fold phone could arrive in just a few months — and this is what its name could be

We've heard a lot about Samsung's tri-foldable phone, but the name of the phone and the release date have remained uncertain. However, that could have now changed thanks to two new leaks. In a recent report, Galaxy Club states that Samsung has applied for trademark protection for the name Galaxy Z Trifold. For a while, it has been speculated that Samsung would go with Galaxy G Fold as a name, but it appears that Samsung could be going in a different direction going by this information. As names go, Galaxy Z TriFold is certainly on brand, making it apparent that the phone is part of the same range as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It should be noted, however, that companies like Samsung are known to trademark several names before a phone's release. As such, we won't know the name for certain until Samsung officially unveils the device. Another rumor has surfaced that might give us a better idea of when the phone will be released. Originally, we had heard that Samsung would unveil the device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 during the recent Galaxy Unpacked. But as you may have noticed last week during the event, that didn't happen. A new leak from IceUniverse might have the answer as to when we'll actually see this tri-folding phone. In a recent post on Weibo, the tipster claimed that Samsung will launch the TriFold in October, while also mentioning that the second generation of Huawei's Mate XT, another triple foldable, will launch in September. There are a lot of rumors circulating about the Galaxy Z TriFold, or G Fold, including what it could look like. We've heard that the phone will be an inward-folding device, which allows for a separate cover screen. This would be different from the Huawei Mate XT, currently the only commercially available triple foldable. Huawei's device concertinas in a 'Z' shape, where the leftmost half of the main display becomes the front of the phone. Speaking of displays, we've heard that the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold's main screen will be 10 inches in size, a marked increase in size compared to the Z Fold 7's 8-inch inner display. The cover screen, meanwhile, will reportedly measure around 6.49 inches. Unfortunately, there are indications that, like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the TriFold won't feature native stylus support, although Samsung is working on a possible solution to re-add support for future Galaxy models. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. If you were hoping to grab Samsung's first attempt at a triple foldable, that could be unfortunately difficult. It seems the phone could only be available in limited numbers in South Korea and China. While this could just be a means for Samsung to gauge interest, there are no indications that the phone will be released in other markets after that just yet. Samsung smartphone head breaks silence on tri-fold phones, hints at 2025 debut

Ever since Huawei launched the Mate XT Ultimate Edition – the world's first tri-fold phone, rumour had it that Samsung was also working on a similar device. Recently, Samsung rolled out a One UI 8 beta build, which features new animations that suggested that a tri-fold phone was indeed in development. Now, Samsung Electronics' Device Experience Division head Roh Tae-moon has confirmed that the company is indeed working to launch a tri-fold phone by the end of the year. 'We are working hard on a tri-fold smartphone with the goal of launching it at the end of this year. We are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not decided its name. As the product nears completion, we are planning to make a final decision soon', said Roh in a press conference. In a statement to Android Authority, a Samsung executive said they had decided on the tri-fold design, but the company was debating whether the market had demand for the new form factor. The recently leaked animation from the One UI 8 beta build hints that, unlike the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition, Samsung's tri-fold phone, which may bear the Galaxy G Fold moniker, may have hinges that fold inwards instead of outwards. It also suggests that Samsung's tri-fold phone will have two hinges of different sizes, with the left side folding inwards and the right side sandwiching on the top. And like the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition, Samsung might warn users that they are not to fold the right panel side as the protruding camera island may prevent the phone from folding flat and damage it. This means that it will be similar to the G-shaped prototype, which the company showcased earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress. And while not much is known about Samsung's tri-fold phone, it will likely feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset and cross the $3,000 price mark. Rumour also has it that the phone will have a screen size of between 9 and 10 inches when unfolded, which might make it more appealing for power users who want a tablet-like device in their pocket.

No Tri-Fold at Unpacked: What's behind Samsung's silence?

The summer Galaxy Unpacked event is now history, and even though we got the Galaxy Z line foldables and also the Galaxy Watch 8, there was something missing. I was keeping my fingers crossed for a teaser of Samsung's tri-folding phone, also known as the Galaxy G Fold, but to no avail. Not that the new devices weren't interesting; it's just that Samsung's triple-folding phone was hyped way back in 2021, when the company showed a prototype at the Korea Display Exhibition. Four years later, it seems that we're still some time away from a triple-folding phone from Samsung. What seems to be the problem? The Samsung Galaxy G Fold is ready but might not see the light of day The first Samsung tri-folding prototype was shown back in 2021 | Image by iMiD TM Roh, Samsung's mobile business chief himself, said earlier this week, "We are working hard on a tri-fold smartphone with the goal of launching it at the end of this year. We are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not decided its name. As the product nears completion, we are planning to make a final decision soon." There were other hints that Samsung has finished designing the Galaxy G Fold and is pondering whether or not to start mass production. Inside sources in the company shared with our colleagues at Android Authority a very interesting statement: "We've had a tri-fold for some time, designed and everything. So it's not a new concept to us. What we're debating is the viability. When I say the viability, is there really a demand for this form factor? ...we are ready (for it), we can put it into production, but to what purpose? That's what we're deeply investigating at the moment." So, what keeps Samsung from releasing the futuristic Galaxy G Fold? To answer this question, we have to turn to the one and only tri-folding phone released on the market at the moment. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate. Huawei Mate XT—a case study in tri-folding phones The Huawei Mate XT - thin as a pancake and equally tasty! | Image by PhoneArena When I saw the Huawei Mate XT for the first time, I was in absolute awe. The device looked surreal and super thin when unfolded, a real tablet that you could put inside your front pocket. Its 10.2-inch tri-folding screen not only offered a huge work and multimedia space but also came in a very useful, almost tablet-like 16:11 aspect ratio. It was under 300 grams, much lighter than many 10-inch tablets, and it also featured a powerful triple-camera system with a periscope zoom lens. The device was so impressive and polished that our editor-in-chief decided to try and use it as a daily driver. And I say "try" for a reason. Our two conversations on the first day of that experiment and about a month later were very, very different. It's a phone! It's a tablet! It's the Huawei Mate XT! | Image by PhoneArena A month later Rad was using a dual-folding device, and when I asked him why, the answer was very simple. "It's just not that practical, and it's too heavy." Which brings us to the next big question. Do we really need a Samsung tri-fold? From the G Flex to the Galaxy G Fold? Will we ever get a Samsung tri-fold? | Image by iMiD Apparently, Samsung has been asking themselves the same question, and that's the main reason we didn't get to see the G Fold at the Unpacked event. There isn't enough demand to justify the production and marketing cost of such a device. And speaking about cost, the small case study above doesn't factor in the price. We are lucky to be getting all those gadgets for free (temporarily at least), so sometimes we forget that part of the equation. If you were to part with $4000 for a phone, you'd feel much different, no matter how futuristic and awe-inspiring that phone might be. It's a valid point, but some of you might say that the same applied to regular foldables when they first came out. Surely, with widespread adoption the price should fall. Sadly, the price isn't the only problem tri-folding devices face. There are conceptual limitations in that design that might never be overcome. Pros and cons of a tri-folding phone That's a lot of screen estate | Image by PhoneArena First, folding and unfolding a phone can be a major nuisance, especially if you have to do it dozens of times a day. This problem is exaggerated with a tri-fold. Second, there's a reason we don't carry tablets around all that often, and it's not just about the size. When it comes to getting things done, most people would prefer a small, ultra-portable laptop. Can't beat a laptop when it comes to productivity | Image by PixaBay" Foldable phones, as good as they can be at multitasking, are far from a full-blown laptop. Android has its limitations both at multitasking and apps, and also when it comes to peripherals, laptops are much more useful. It doesn't fold but it also costs ten times less... | Image by PhoneArena There's also the case of media consumption; a big screen is perfect for that, but paying that huge amount of money so you can watch Netflix on your flight or in the subway doesn't make much sense. You can use a $300 tablet for that. Granted, it won't fold into your pocket, but a backpack or a briefcase will save you those $3,700 on top of a regular tablet. So, is there a reason for the smartphone to try and bridge that gap between a regular candy bar phone and a big tablet or a laptop? At its current shape and form, and at $4000, probably not.
