Goodbye festivals, hello more festivals: Events in Edmonton this weekend

The ferris wheel at KDays in Edmonton on July 23, 2025. (Galen McDougall/CTV News Edmonton) This weekend marks the last chance for some iconic Edmonton festivals, but ushers in the chance to explore other fun events in the area. The last day for both Taste of Edmonton and KDays is Sunday – for those who haven't made a trip yet, they're great ways to explore local culture, food, rides and play some games. That means it's the last weekend of KDays performances at the Expo Centre. Walk off the Earth performs Friday night, G-Eazy on Saturday and 98 Degrees closes out the shows on Sunday. NKOTB, Boyz II Men, 98 Degrees team up Members of 98 Degrees, from left to right, Jeff Timmons, Drew Lachey, Nick Lachey and Justin Jeffre appear on NBC's "Today" show, Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, in New York. (Charles Sykes/Invision/AP) It's also the last weekend to catch a showing of Disney's The Lion King at the Northern Alberta Jubilee auditorium. It's the continent's longest-running and most-attended Broadway tour. If you have some money to spend on youthful fun, The Big Bounce Canada is here starting Saturday until Aug. 3. It's the world's largest traveling inflatable park and features a 32-feet tall bouncy castle, 300-metre long obstacle course and an arena dedicated to sports. Family-friendly fun and good causes This weekend is also the ninth annual Edmonton Jerk Fest and Family BBQ, running from 12 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Northmount community centre. Jerk Fest Edmontonians soaked up the sun at Jerk Fest on Saturday, July 8. (Galan McDougall/CTV News Edmonton) Stop by to check out authentic jerk cuisine and listen to reggae, dancehall and soca music. It's free to attend and family-friendly. Ice District cinema is bringing back free family-friendly movies this Saturday with a showing of The Wild Robot at 3 p.m. Doors open two hours beforehand in the plaza – admission is free, but it is bring-your-own-lawnchair. For the marathoners out there, this Sunday marks the fourth annual Move for Mental Health 5 km run at Aspen Gardens Community League. It starts at 10 a.m., taking runners through the Whitemud ravine and Aspen Gardens and promising a BBQ and prizes at the end. The run accepts cash and card donations for registration on the day of the event with all proceeds going to the Mental Health Foundation. Non-profit Rogers Birdies for Kids will match donations up to 50 per cent. More Edmonton events can be found on the Explore Edmonton website.

Stony Plain Road and 124 Street intersection reopens after Valley Line West LRT construction

Stony Plain Road and 124 Street in Edmonton on June 11, 2025. (Galen McDougall/CTV News Edmonton) The intersection of Stony Plain Road and 124 Street has reopened to traffic, one week ahead of schedule. Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the company building the Valley Line West LRT, fully closed the intersection on April 22 to speed up construction on the project. North and south traffic on 124 Street has reopened at full capacity, but east and west traffic on Stony Plain Road has been permanently reduced to one lane in both directions. Right and left turns are permitted, except for eastbound to northbound left turns, which are permanently banned. Pedestrian access has been reopened throughout the intersection. Marigold says drivers will continue to see construction in the area for several years until the LRT project is completed.
