Galt Police unveil memorial of former officer Harminder Grewal

Feb. 22—A memorial statue bust of Harminder Grewal was unveiled on Thursday afternoon at the Galt Police Department, with family, friends and colleagues gathering to honor an officer who died in the line of duty. The ceremony was the culmination of a community-wide effort to cement the legacy of a public servant who was named Officer of the Year just months before he was tragically killed in a vehicle collision. A post of the Galt Police Department Facebook page read "This memorial proudly stands in front of our department building and serves as a lasting symbol of his unwavering commitment, courage, and the impact he made on our department and community. Officer Grewal's sacrifice will always be remembered, and his dedication will continue to inspire those who serve." On Aug. 22, 2021, at 4:35 a.m., Grewal and fellow officer Kapri Herrera were traveling north on Highway 99 to assist with the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County when their patrol car was struck head-on by a Ford pick-up truck that jumped the concrete median from the southbound lanes near the Dillard Road interchange. Both Grewal and Herrera had to be extricated from the vehicle, with the former taken to Kaiser's South Sacramento campus in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries four days later. Herrera returned the department after a long recovery. An officer with the Galt department for more than two years at the time of his death, Grewal was named the 2020 Officer of the Year in 2021. He had also been recognized by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving California the prior March at an awards ceremony for helping remove 64 impaired motorists from the streets in 2020. Grewal's name is on the Fallen Heroes Memorial outside Galt City Hall, along with Galt Police Officer Kevin Tonn and Sacramento County Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum, who were both shot and killed in the line of duty, Tonn in January 2013 and Marcum in November 2012.

Dogs rescued in California after being tied up, stranded

(NewsNation) — Two dogs were rescued on Valentine's Day in California after they were tied up and left stranded in rising waters, according to the Galt Police Department. Officers were called to the Dry Creek Preserve area about an animal cruelty case. The caller told police that two dogs were tied to a leash and stuck on an embankment with water rising quickly around them. When officers arrived, they heard the dogs barking, but it was difficult to access them due to the flooding in the area. The fire department deployed a water rescue raft and rescued both dogs, a German Shepherd and a Belgian Malinois. The dogs were taken by the Sacramento County Animal Control to be seen by a vet. The German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois were scanned for microchips, and officers were able to identify the owner. The Galt Police Department is investigating and working to locate the owner. Suspect arrested in Galt DUI hit-and-run collision

Police in Galt on Saturday arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run DUI collision involving a motorcyclist, according to authorities. In a Facebook post, the Galt Police Department provided details about the collision and arrest. Authorities received a report Saturday from a concerned citizen who witnessed an SUV hitting a moving motorcycle near W. Stockton Blvd. and Twin Cities Rd. The person provided Galt police dispatch with updates as to where the suspect vehicle was headed. Officers contacted the male suspect at a shopping center about three miles south of the collision on the 1000 block of C St. Police said the suspect was unable to remember where he struck the motorcyclist due to his high level of intoxication. Police said in addition to having two prior DUI convictions, the suspect was on DUI court probation and his license was suspended for prior DUI. According to authorities, the suspect was at twice the legal limit of BAC of .16%. However, it is illegal for a driver on DUI court probation to have a BAC higher than .01%. The suspect was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony charges of DUI, felony hit-and-run, and other DUI-related misdemeanor charges. "This incident could've had a devastating outcome but we are incredibly relieved to share the news of the motorcyclist only having minor injuries after being hit by a Ford SUV," the post read. Galt police also thanked the witness who promptly reported the collision and provided pertinent information leading to the suspect's arrest.

Galt PD reassures its immigrant community

Feb. 4—GALT — Like many law enforcement agencies in the region, the Galt Police Department this week said its officers will not arrest anyone based on their immigration status. The department posted a statement on social media Monday regarding compliance with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency — more commonly known as ICE — and said it remains dedicated to serving all members of the community, regardless of status. "In accordance with California law, Galt Police Officers will not ask immigration status during our contacts with the public nor do we hold individuals solely based on federal immigration detainers," the agency said. "Our focus remains on building trust, preventing crime, and ensuring everyone feels safe reporting emergencies or seeking help from law enforcement." The California law in question is Senate Bill 54, also known as the California Values Act, which prohibits state and local enforcement agencies from using resources to investigate, detain or arrest individuals solely for immigration enforcement purposes, except in specific circumstances like cases involving serious crimes and judicial warrants. "We want to reassure members of our community that while we do not participate in immigration enforcement, our officers will take necessary action in situations related to direct and immediate public safety threats, the apprehension of dangerous felons who pose an ongoing risk to our community, and any emergencies that require law enforcement action/intervention," the agency said. The Galt Police Department is the latest law enforcement agency to release a statement about immigration arrests in the wake of President Donald Trump's election. Trump, who was inaugurated for the second time on Jan. 20, vowed to crackdown on immigration during his campaign and undo policies put in place by his predecessor that allowed for what he said was a large influx of undocumented persons into the country. After his inaugural ceremony, Trump signed executive orders giving ICE greater ability to conduct enforcement actions and expand the pool of undocumented immigrants subject to fast-track deportations. Two weeks ago, the Lodi Police Department and San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office both said they will comply with SB 54 and not arrest anyone based on their immigration status. Last month, surveyed all 58 sheriffs' departments in the state about immigration enforcement under Trump, and 21 responded that they will comply with the California Values Act. The Sacramento, Calaveras and Amador sheriff's offices did not respond to the inquiry.
