NBA Legend Isiah Thomas Makes Strong Caitlin Clark Statement
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is coming off a standout rookie season, where she averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game. She also took home Rookie of the Year honors, earned a spot on the All-WNBA First Team, and was named an All-Star. But beyond the accolades, it's how she plays that truly sets her apart. Clark has brought a level of shooting to the women's game that few have ever seen. Advertisement In college, she shattered the Division I record for career three-pointers with 548. In the WNBA, she became the Fever's all-time single-season leader in made threes, was the fastest player in league history to hit 100 (34 games), and broke the rookie single-season record for most three-pointers made. Clark's ability to control the tempo, space the floor and get her teammates involved are also strengths of hers. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22)Jeffrey Becker After Tuesday night's NBA playoff game between the Indiana Pacers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA legend Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV's "GameTime" that Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton has been playing like Clark lately. Advertisement "His intellect for the game is on another level," Thomas said of Haliburton. "At the start of the game, when he walked in, I said, 'He's walking in like Caitlin Clark.' Right? Now, real talk, right? The way he played the game tonight, this is a Caitlin Clark-type of game — spreading the floor, right? He knocked down the 3, he kept the pace, and not only did he keep the pace, he controlled the tempo, he got everybody involved... he had the floor spread out, you know, he's shooting it from way, way, way, way, way, way, way, waaaay out there…" Thomas went on to say that Haliburton likely picked up parts of his game from watching Clark, just as all players do when they watch others. That wouldn't be a surprise, as Clark and Haliburton have formed a friendship since her arrival in Indiana and often show support by attending each other's games. "I say this in all sincerity," Thomas added. "We all steal a little from each other when we play against each other, when we watch somebody play, right? … I think Haliburton watching Caitlin, and their relationship, you know being fans of each other, I see a lot of her game in his game, right now.' In Game 5 of the Pacers-Cavaliers series, Haliburton shot 6-of-10 from three and finished with 31 points, six rebounds and eight assists. ANDERSON — General Pulaski Park has been a part of the city of Anderson since 1930, and it recently received a $327,000 upgrade to the playground. Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. said during a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday that in the early 1900s, a large Polish community located in the area. The city received a $91,500 grant from GameTime for the new playground equipment. The equipment is designed so that children with physical disabilities can climb the tower and use the attached slides. Residents will see new playground features, including the multi-level tower, new slides, climbing apparatuses, stand-alone spinners, walkways, new swings, and a variety of activity centers. The slide, donated by the Anderson Rotary in 2018 in honor of 100 years of service to the city's youth, will remain as a feature of the park's play area. 'This park is a popular attraction,' Broderick said. 'It has a walking trail, fish pond, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts.' He said the planned upgrades include an improvements to the restroom facilities at the park. Broderick said the city has purchased equipment for a park upgrade in the Meadowbrook area to be completed this summer. 'It takes a team effort,' he said. 'We have expanded the footprint of this park for added equipment.' Tom Tackett, maintenance supervisor for the Anderson Parks Department, said the playground equipment is known as the 'Dallas Dazzler,' which was on display at a national trade show. He said the city has worked with May and May, which has done installations of equipment on seven upgraded city parks recently. 'This is a heavily used park,' Tackett said. Kenny Davenport, a member of the Anderson Park Board, said the board has been active in pursuing park improvements. 'Ther is no greater joy than to see the playground for the kids to use,' he said. Broderick said the city has upgraded 25 of its 30 parks over the past nine years. He said the Park Department has an annual budget of $3.5 million, which at one time was only $800,000. City to update parks
ELKHART — The City of Elkhart Parks and Recreation Department is looking to replace and update playgrounds at many of its properties this year, officials said. Jamison Czarnecki, superintendent of the Elkhart parks department, said the city is in the process of switching out a lot of playgrounds and adding a few more. The parks department is replacing and updating five playgrounds at Weston Park, Geroldeon Thursby Park, Island Park, Riverview Softball Complex and Gans Park. One new playground will be installed at SOMA Gardens located off of Division Street. 'More projects will be installed later in the year as they're confirmed with the public,' Czarnecki said. The funding for these projects is provided by the city's general fund, a grant from the Community Foundation and a Community Champions Playground Grant from GameTime, officially through PlayCore. Riverview Softball Complex is estimated to have a toddler playground complete by the end of April, according to Czarnecki. The playground at Geroldeon Thursby is estimated to be complete by the first week of May. Weston Park's playground will completed by mid-May, according to Czarnecki. Island Park's playground is estimated to be completed by the end of May. The renovations at SOMA Gardens estimated to be complete in late June, and Gans Park should be complete in mid to late July. Czarnecki said Walker Park will also be getting a new bathroom building and an outdoor gym, which are planned to be done by late May. He said there will be a celebration on June 7 at Walker Park to mark the recent improvements. 'The Elkhart Park Foundation is going to put on a full day of activities to highlight the improvements of the park,' Czarnecki said. Czarnecki said the administration has been focused on making improvements to the parks to help with neighborhood and community engagement. He said it will also bring people into the parks to be more active and for their overall health. Czarnecki said in the last master plan process, it was recognized that several playgrounds were past their lifespan. 'Many of these are over 30 years old and have become potential liability hazards,' Czarnecki said. 'We were able to go after this grant which opened up a lot of opportunity to replace them at one time. In doing so, it's going to make our parks safer because people will be out there on the new equipment checking them out with their kids, with their families, and with their friends.' Czarnecki said the impact of these investments to the city will bring people out into the parks and will give families and residents an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. He also said when a city invests in its parks, residents and business are more likely to stay. Christopher Baiker, president of the city Parks and Recreation board, said the master plan for the parks department is consistent with the city's broader ASPIRE plan. 'We're really trying to build a park system for everyone,' Baiker said, 'so that all areas of the community are served and that we upgrade all of the existing equipment and then also, kind of in a forward thinking manner, plan to better utilize our parks.' Two Apple Valley parks to get new playground structures
The Apple Valley Town Council recently approved the purchase of new playground structures for Corwin and Mendel parks. The approval includes the purchase and installation of the playground structures from Playcore Wisconsin/GameTime/ OMNIA Partners. The approval includes the addition of wood chips and the removal of existing playground equipment at Corwin Park and Mendel Park. The price proposal of $530,000 comes with a 10% contingency to cover any unforeseen needs to complete the project, which should not exceed $583,000. In February 2024, the town council approved the use of just over $1.3 million in Quimby Funds for priority park projects. The top two items on the priority list for improvement were the replacement of the playground structures at Corwin Park and Mendel Park, according to a staff report. Both of these playgrounds, installed before 2000, are over 25 years old and in need of significant upgrades, staff reported. The playground structure at Corwin Park was originally installed in 1998. Over the years, several replacement parts have been added, and while the equipment is still functional, it requires additional repairs and a full replacement. Corwin Park is located at 18577 Corwin Road just north of Highway 18. The existing playground equipment at Mendel Park was installed in 1996 and has experienced many broken parts that have been repaired or replaced. It is now in need of a complete replacement. Mendel Park is located at 21860 Tussing Ranch Road and adjacent to Mariana Elementary School in south Apple Valley. After council approval, town staff will issue an order for the purchase and installation of a new playground structure and wood chips for Corwin Park and the purchase and installation of a new playground structure at Mendel Park. The current lead time for such a structure is 10 to 12 weeks to deliver and install from the time of purchase. The town will need to purchase the playground equipment as quickly after approval as possible to ensure the completion of the playground by mid-June 2025.
