‘I thought Vidhu Vinod Chopra would hit me': Ram Gopal Varma says 12th Fail director ‘believes he's the best filmmaker', Anurag Kashyap recalls quitting his film

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra was the topic of conversation for directors Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap. In a recent interview, the duo revealed hilarious anecdotes and their memories of working with the 12th Fail director. While Kashyap called him 'self-obsessed' and recalled leaving his film Mission Kashmir, RGV said that Chopra believes that he is the best filmmaker in the world. During a conversation with India TV, Anurag spoke about quitting Chopra's Mission Kashmir. Without revealing the details, he said, 'I had written a script for Shivam Nair to do for television. That is when I left Mission Kashmir and I asked Shivam, 'Can I direct my own script?'. Shivam gracefully agreed.' Having said that, the Gangs Of Wasseypur director praised Chopra's creative mind. 'The child in him is still alive. His self-obsession and vanity co-exist. There's one sequence in 12th Fail where Vikrant Massey's character has gone all the way to (Uttarakhand). It's a single-shot scene. The way he has designed it, he's a craftsman. When he's at his peak craftsmanship, you do admire him,' he added. ALSO READ | Ram Gopal Varma says Mani Ratnam called Dil Se co-producer 'mad' for wanting to change film's climax: 'We should switch to Chaiya Chaiya' Ram Gopal Varma had his own funny anecdotes to share. Recalling a script narration for Mission Kashmir, he said, 'He mentioned 'shikara' (houseboat). Now, I am not a Hindi guy. I assumed that 'shikara' meant hunter! I thought that he differently pronounced 'shikari' (laughs). A little ahead into the narration, he told me, 'The shikara blows up'… After 10 minutes, I asked him, 'Why was the hunter killed?'' He continued, 'He said, 'Ramu, you don't know shikara'! He was so angry with me (laughs)… I screwed up the entire narration. He was so angry with me that I thought he was about to hit me or something!' RGV also claimed that Vidhu Vinod Chopra believes he is the best filmmaker in the world. 'He genuinely believes that he's the best filmmaker in the world. Whether he's one or not, I am not going to say that. But I don't think any filmmaker in the world will believe that,' he concluded.

Amid Hera Pheri 3 controversy, THIS actor to replace Paresh Rawal as 'Babu Bhaiya'? Here's what we know

Amid Hera Pheri 3 controversy, THIS actor to replace Paresh Rawal as 'Babu Bhaiya'? Here's what we know Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has sent shockwaves among masses and the entire film fraternity by announcing that he has quit Hera Pheri 3 . His portrayal of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte is one of the most loved comic characters. Amid news of exit, fans started floating suggestions on who should replace Paresh Rawal in Priyardarshan's directorial. And guess what whose name has been popped up as a suitable match for the role? It's none other than the Mirzapur star Pankaj Tripathi. Netizens on social media have been suggesting Pankaj Tripathi's name as a replacement to Paresh Rawal in Hera Pheri 3. Well, when asked the Gangs Of Wasseypur actor what he has to revert to this, he simply quashed the rumours and said, 'That is something I have also heard and read. I don't believe in it.' He added, 'Paresh ji is an amazing actor. I am zero in front of him. I respect him a lot. I don't think I am the right person for the role,' Pankaj Tripathi was quoted while speaking to Bollywood Hungama. While announcing his exit from Hera Pheri 3, Paresh Rawal took to X (formerly known as twitter) account on May 18 and wrote, 'I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences. I REITERATE THAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DISAGREEMENT WITH THE FILM MAKER . I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan the film director.' I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences. I REITERATE THAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DISAGREEMENT WITH THE FILM MAKER . I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan the film director. — Paresh Rawal (@SirPareshRawal) May 18, 2025 However, the matter escalated after Akshay Kumar, his Heri Pheri 3 co-star sent a legal notice to him through his production house Cape of Good Films, demanding Rs 25 crore for his abrupt withdrawal from the film. The production house also claimed that Rawal was paid Rs 11 lakh, and never addressed any issues about creative differences during his association with the film. Their statement further added that Hera Pheri 3 shoot began on April 3, 2025, and about three minutes of footage was shot with Rawal. They have accused him of an 'abrupt, unilateral, and mala fide' exit from Hera Pheri 3.

Cannes 2025: Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound is a timely, trenchant testament to our times

Neeraj Ghaywan first came to Cannes in 2012, as part of a huge crew festooned with colourful gamchhas, for the premiere of the Anurag Kashyap's Gangs Of Wasseypur. In 2015, he was selected in Un Certain Regard for his debut feature, 'Masaan', which won the FIPRESCI prize. And now he's back in the same section with Homebound, a film as intensely personal, dealing with issues as crucial, or perhaps even more so in new India where the fissures between the privileged and the marginalised are deepening with every passing day. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, Janhvi Kapoor and a strong supporting cast, the film has been produced by Dharma, with Martin Scorsese finding a very honourable mention on the credit list. The genesis of the film tells us how current 'events' can become not just the superstructure of the film, but also part of its texture. In 2020, the New York Times published staff writer Basharat Peer's lengthy investigation pieced from a photograph which began being shared on social media platforms during an early Covid lockdown. No one knew who took the picture; without saying a word, it told a stark story: on a highway, there sat two young men, one cradling the other in his arms, trying to revive him. It was a time when migrant workers were forced to walk thousands of miles to get to their homes, as their workplaces had shut down. As Peer followed the story of these two young men, one Dalit, the other Muslim, he found that they were Surat mill workers, sending their earnings home to a village in UP, the first to help build a 'pucca' house, and the other to fund an operation for his father, without which he had become unable to walk. Ghaywan's concerns have never been hidden, right from his full-length feature Masaan to the short Juice, to a novella-length Geeli Pucchhi. He is clearly on the side of those who do no have power, and how those structures are skewed through accidents of birth and generational wealth. Also Read | At Aranyer Din Ratri's Cannes' premiere, Sharmila Tagore says, 'I, Simi Garewal are the only survivors' 'Poora naam kya hai, beta? Chandan? Aage kya likhte ho? Kumar. (What is your full name, son?)' As soon as Chandan comes up with that little telling detail, the government official gets that knowing look. 'Sher ki khaal pehnene se suar sher nahi bann jaata. (Wearing a lion's skin cannot make a pig a lion).' A post shared by Shubhra Gupta (@shubhragupta) While Chandan no-surname Kumar can get by with hiding the details of his non-existent surname, Shoaib Ali has nothing to hide behind. His name is a dead giveaway, and in today's India, being Muslim, and dirt-poor deposits you on the margins of the already marginalised. His struggle to find gainful employment will find resonance in the countless instances where 'kaagaz' proving your identity, and consequently, fealty to the nation, have become the only way to get a foot into the door. Homebound's buddy film elements are placed on the highly volatile intersection of caste, class and gender, with religion added to the mix. And though there's not much subtlety with which the film communicates its message, it is a timely, trenchant testament to our times. Here's hoping it finds a release soon back home. Meanwhile, the premiere, attended by the cast and crew (with producers Karan Johan, Apoorva Mehta and Somen Mishra in their red carpet best) ended with a nine-minute standing ovation. Could this mix of mainstream production muscle and arthouse sensibility be the beginning of a new innings for Indian cinema? Should we live in hope?

Nawazuddin Siddiqui On Reprising His Role In Bajrangi Bhaijaan Sequel: "It Depends On The Makers"

New Delhi: The 2015 film Bajrangi Bhaijaan, directed by Kabir Khan, is one of Salman Khan's finest films to date. The film also had Harshaali Malhotra, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in key roles. Recently, the writer of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, V Vijayendra Prasad, revealed that he had met Salman Khan to discuss the story for a possible sequel to the Kabir Khan-directed film. Nawazuddin Siddiqui played Chand Nawab, a Pakistani reporter, in the film. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Nawazuddin responded to the rumours, "I don't have any information on a sequel being made. It (the decision to cast him) depends on them (the makers). I cannot be ' main first mein tha toh mujhe bhi lo. ' It doesn't work like that. Agar unki zaroorat hogi, toh hum haazir ho jayenge." The plot of Bajrangi Bhaijaan revolves around a Hindu man played by Salman Khan, who goes out of his way to help a mute Pakistani girl (Harshaali Malhotra) to find her way back home after she gets lost in India. The film was applauded both for its critical and commercial success. In the same interview, Nawazuddin was also asked about being a part of Gangs Of Wasseypur's third instalment, to which he said, "Film banegi hi nahi. Woh director (Anurag Kashyap) hi nahi chahta. The good thing about Anurag is that he is not stuck in nostalgia. He is someone (who believes that) once it's done, it's done. Move on." On the work front, Nawazuddin Siddiqui had his OTT film Costao released last week. The biographical crime drama is directed by Sejal Shah and has received a positive response from the viewers.
