Teenager dies during dahi handi celebrations in Mumbai

Mumbai: A day after Rohan Valvi, 14, from Adarsh Nagar in the Marol area died during Dahi Handi celebrations, local residents recounted the tragic sequence of events that unfolded. The deceased, the middle child in a family of three, was the son of a carpenter. Mahadev, a local from the area, said Valvi reached the Govinda Pathak to take part in the traditional rituals. "A puja was being conducted, as is customary before the Dahi Handi begins. During the puja itself, he suddenly began vomiting. His friends immediately rushed him towards a nearby dispensary. But on the way, at Asalpha, his body turned cold," Mahadev recalled. At the dispensary, they were advised to take him to a govt hospital. He was subsequently shifted to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where doctors declared him brought dead. The incident cast a pall of gloom over Adarsh Nagar, with locals mourning the untimely loss of a teenager who was battling illness but joined the festivities regardless. Andheri (East) BJP MLA Murji Patel stepped forward on Sunday evening to extend financial support to the grieving family. Patel, who visited the family, said Valvi was associated with the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak. "I will provide any financial help possible from my side as the family is poor. The boy was suffering from jaundice and did not attend practice sessions for the past three days. On Saturday, however, he joined the celebrations against his family's wishes. His parents were reluctant for him to participate as his health had not recovered fully," said Patel.
