Northern California garlic festival returns to Gilroy for the first time since mass shooting

( –A 40-year-old garlic celebration is returning to its roots in Gilroy for the first time since a mass shooting prompted it to relocate, then later be cancelled.• In 2019, a 19-year-old gunman attacked the event, killing three people, including two children. 13 others were wounded before the shooter killed himself as police officers closed in. Subsequently, the Gilroy event moved to various locations. Stockon police ask horse owners for help in protection of the city

( — It may be time to start horsing around for Stockton residents as the Stockton Police Department is seeking out new volunteers to help expand their mounted patrol unit. SPD said that you could be the next to join their group as they try to expand their unit more into the community. The unit already has 10 riders but SPD is hoping to add 20 more to their team. Some residents may have seen Dale, Rek, and Chaps trotting around during community walks and some events before. Lt. Chuck Harris from Stockton Police Department, said, 'We take the horses out to events like National Night Out, the malls at Christmas time, the Asparagus Festival, the Garlic Festival, and we have a great time doing it.' Student cited for assaulting teacher at Antelope High School SPD said that they are looking for horse owners in the city to volunteer and become a new addition to their unit. 'We're definitely going to go by some schools so when children get out of school, they interact, let them pet some horses. It's amazing, whenever you go out and you hear people tell you, 'I've never seen a horse in real life', Harris said. Josie Hart, FOX40 reporter met with Lt. Harris and his four-legged partner Bam Bam at Cadwell Park to explain more about how the unit works. According to Harris, 'It's all different from what officers do on a day-to-day. We still do enforcement. We enforce Stockton municipal codes and vehicle codes, everything that you could do in a car.' Stockton police said that community demand and fundraising efforts have allowed them to have the ability to expand. 'We used to have a Mounted Patrol Unit. We lost the Mounted Patrol Unit in 2010 during bankruptcy, unfortunately. However, with the hard work and dedication from my team, in 2017, we brought the horse unit back, and ever since we've been back in the community trying to make a difference', Harris said. Stockton police, Chief Stanley Mcfadden, said in a statement to FOX40, 'This new initiative will collaborate closely with our dedicated Mounted Patrol Officers to enhance community engagement, support public events, strengthen crime prevention efforts, and assist with search and rescue operations.' Mcfadden is an advocate for the expansion and says a bigger unit means more visibility, more grounds covered, more community members, and allows for businesses to feel safe. You can use the SPD volunteer interest form to sign up to be a volunteer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
