Stockon police ask horse owners for help in protection of the city
(FOX40.COM) — It may be time to start horsing around for Stockton residents as the Stockton Police Department is seeking out new volunteers to help expand their mounted patrol unit.
SPD said that you could be the next to join their group as they try to expand their unit more into the community. The unit already has 10 riders but SPD is hoping to add 20 more to their team.
Some residents may have seen Dale, Rek, and Chaps trotting around during community walks and some events before.
Lt. Chuck Harris from Stockton Police Department, said, 'We take the horses out to events like National Night Out, the malls at Christmas time, the Asparagus Festival, the Garlic Festival, and we have a great time doing it.'

SPD said that they are looking for horse owners in the city to volunteer and become a new addition to their unit.
'We're definitely going to go by some schools so when children get out of school, they interact, let them pet some horses. It's amazing, whenever you go out and you hear people tell you, 'I've never seen a horse in real life', Harris said.
Josie Hart, FOX40 reporter met with Lt. Harris and his four-legged partner Bam Bam at Cadwell Park to explain more about how the unit works.
According to Harris, 'It's all different from what officers do on a day-to-day. We still do enforcement. We enforce Stockton municipal codes and vehicle codes, everything that you could do in a car.'
Stockton police said that community demand and fundraising efforts have allowed them to have the ability to expand.
'We used to have a Mounted Patrol Unit. We lost the Mounted Patrol Unit in 2010 during bankruptcy, unfortunately. However, with the hard work and dedication from my team, in 2017, we brought the horse unit back, and ever since we've been back in the community trying to make a difference', Harris said.
Stockton police, Chief Stanley Mcfadden, said in a statement to FOX40, 'This new initiative will collaborate closely with our dedicated Mounted Patrol Officers to enhance community engagement, support public events, strengthen crime prevention efforts, and assist with search and rescue operations.'
Mcfadden is an advocate for the expansion and says a bigger unit means more visibility, more grounds covered, more community members, and allows for businesses to feel safe.
You can use the SPD volunteer interest form to sign up to be a volunteer.

California gun control bill that could ban popular Glock pistol sales moves forward
( — A bill that could ban the sale of the most popular handgun in the U.S. is potentially on its way to becoming law after it passed through the California State Assembly on Tuesday. Assembly Bill 1127, also referred to by many people as the Glock Ban Bill, was authored by Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) and would prohibit licensed firearms dealers from selling guns that can be 'easily converted by hand or with common household tools' into a machine gun. Although the Glock isn't specifically mentioned in the written legislation, it falls into that category of firearms. New gun laws won't be enforced by Sutter County Sheriff's Office 'I am pleased to be presenting AB 1127, which will protect communities from mass shootings and gun violence by encouraging gun manufacturers to prevent the conversion of their firearms to dangerous automatic weapons,' Gabriel said during an Assembly Standing Committee hearing. He continued, 'Automatic weapons are exceptionally lethal and capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute. They are illegal in California. Unfortunately, some semi-automatic firearms feature a dangerous design flaw that allows them to be converted to fully automatic weapons through an attachment of a cheap and easy-to-use device, known as a switch.' Northern California police warn of $1,000 fine per illegal firework amid Fourth of July holiday The Glock is infamous for its easy-alteration capabilities by using a 'Glock switch'. In 2022, a converted Glock was reportedly used in a mass shooting that occurred just blocks from the California State Capitol Building. It left six people dead and several others injured. 'Sadly, certain companies in the gun industry have known about this issue for decades and have done nothing meaningful to address it,' Gabriel said. 'This common-sense legislation will ensure that the gun industry is held accountable and that we're doing everything we possibly can to protect our communities from mass shootings.' AB 1127 is supported by organizations like Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and Voices for Progress. However, other groups such as the National Association for Gun Rights and Gun Owners of California Inc. are in opposition. 'AB 1127 is a blatant attack on your right to own one of the most common self-defense firearms in America,' Gun Owners of California said on social media before the bill passed through the Assembly. 'This bill targets semiautomatic pistols used by millions of law-abiding gun owners—and it's being pushed under the false pretense of 'safety'.' NAGR vowed to fight back against the proposed legislation. 'California (is) pushing rapidly towards a total ban of Glock pistols,' NAGR said on social media. 'The most popular firearm in the country. If you think there is a line they will not cross, think again.' AB 1127 passed on a vote of 58-17, with Democrat support and Republican opposition. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Puppy Dumped Outside Woman's Home, Hearts Break as She's 'Literally Smiling'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An 8-week-old brown puppy dumped outside a home has captured the hearts of thousands online—especially after she was spotted smiling through her ordeal. Brooke Harris, 28, who lives in Dallas, Texas, shared the story on TikTok (@13rookeharris), where the video quickly gained traction, reaching over 203,000 views and thousands of likes. "We were so upset that someone could do this to an innocent baby, but we were so relieved she happened to be placed in front of our homes," Harris told Newsweek. Harris said that she and her neighbors first discovered the puppy after one of them noticed an unfamiliar truck parked outside and asked about it in their neighborhood WhatsApp group. When the truck's owner—a neighbor's boyfriend—was identified, another neighbor responded by posting a photo of the puppy curled up in the bed of the truck. Harris said the puppy had clearly been dumped, as there was no way she could have climbed in herself. A bowl of water had been left with her. A split image of the dumped dog in the truck; and in the yard. @13rookeharris/@13rookeharris "She's literally smiling," Harris wrote as the text overlaying the video of the image of the pup looking like she was grinning. Fortunately, the woman whose boyfriend owned the truck took the puppy into her home. Her boyfriend, who is a veterinarian, checked the pup over. She was covered in fleas and ticks, but he had the appropriate medication and bath products to treat her. Harris and the other neighbors, all dog lovers, quickly came together to support the puppy. "Me and neighbor 1 have dogs, so we brought over a bed, food, bones, and toys to keep her happy until we figure out what to do with her," she said. "She is the sweetest little pup ever, so innocent and so happy to be around people. We really wanted to make the best decision on her rehoming." After sharing the photo of the puppy in the truck bed on her Instagram story, a friend suggested Harris post it to TikTok to reach a wider audience. The response was overwhelming. "The TikTok unexpectedly blew up, and I had about 10 to 15 people asking to adopt her," Harris said. After considering several offers, Harris and her neighbors agreed to place the puppy with a woman who already had a female dog and a large backyard. She frequently takes her dog hiking and on trips, and the group felt confident she would give the puppy the loving home she deserved. "Her new owner has been updating us with pictures, and she's settling in so great already and gets along with her new sister perfectly," Harris added. Reflecting on the whirlwind of emotions the experience brought, Harris said: "How we felt about the whole situation was a mixture of mad, sad, and happy. We were so upset that someone could do this to an innocent baby, but we were so relieved she happened to be placed in front of our homes. "The three of us are big animal lovers, and it just worked out perfectly. Now this pup gets a second shot at life. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to do something good for the world," Harris added. TikTok users flooded the comments with gratitude and heartbreak. "Thank you for helping this sweet baby!" one user wrote. "I hope she went to a good home," said another. "How could they hurt this baby angel please lord God help this baby angel," commented one viewer. "She smiled at you, why didn't you just say 'stay' you even took the picture," another user posted. "Some Humans are not humane. Thank you for helping," added Moe. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
