Kate Garraway awkwardly jokes about 'being fired' from Good Morning Britain

The 58-year-old TV presenter was helming the flagship news programme alongside Ed Balls to kick off the week, with Louie Spence in the studio off the back of his dismal turn in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. The 56-year-old choreographer discussed his decision to quit the gruelling reality show in the first episode of filming, revealing he had never actually watched the programme before appearing on it. At the end of the interview, Spence complimented Garraway on her voluminous blonde hair and asked why she had never done an advert for hair products, adding: 'Every morning I watch you and think 'she's worth it',' he said while mimicking a hair flip with his bald head. Garraway then explained that she is not 'allowed' to endorse products with brand deals, given that it's a conflict of interest with their impartiality. Spence then became faux outraged and referred to the huge upcoming shake-up of ITV's daytime TV slate as it looks to make money-saving cuts. Louie Spence was in the studio to discuss SAS (Picture: Jed Bradley/ITV) Garraway laughed in the studio at the ITV gags (Picture: Jed Bradley/ITV) Spence joked: 'How dare they? What's going on? They're cutting Lorraine, the Loose Women are being cut, what's going on? This place is going to wrack and ruin.' Garraway laughed in the studio, but intervened to explain: 'I work in news and we are religiously, despite what people think, impartial, so you don't endorse anything.' She then joked: 'When they fire me Louie, which is probably right now for talking too much, I'll go and do one.' Spence replied: 'I'll say strap in darling, because everyone's being cut.' What has ITV said about the cuts? Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, explained the changes in a statement. 'Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. 'These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever.' Garraway explained she's not allowed to endorse products (Picture: Jed Bradley/ITV) Good Morning Britain is part of the upcoming ITV shake-up (Picture: Jed Bradley/ITV) ITV earlier this year announced that Lorraine will no longer be one hour long as they cut the show's run-time in half. The announcement from ITV stated that the show will also run on a 'seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year' rather than throughout the year. Like Lorraine, Loose Women has also been cut down to a 30-week schedule, taking up the 'seasonal' schedule it operated on until 2016. Loose Women has retained its normal slot in the daily diary, continuing to take place on weekdays from 12:30pm to 1pm. It was announced that these major changes will be enforced in January 2026. It was added that Good Morning Britain (GMB) will now run from 6am to 9:30am, filling the half-hour slot originally held by Lorraine. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. Got a story? Kate Garraway sells investment flat to pay off debt

The Good Morning Britain (GMB) presenter said the cost of his basic care exceeded her ITV salary and did not factor in his therapies, the mortgage payments or other household expenses. Garraway's second property is located in North London and sold for £1.5 million, according to The Sun. However, due to the flat being 'heavily mortgaged' what she'll get from it will cover little of her debt, the newspaper suggests. The 58-year-old is said to have bought the flat as an investment but she was reportedly forced to sell it. An insider reportedly told The Sun: 'Kate takes paying off the debts very seriously and she's always said she'd go to any lengths to achieve that. 'This is just part of that commitment, even if it does mean she's had to lose the flat which she actually purchased years ago before meeting Derek and before they bought a family home together. 'Like many people, she was keeping it as a financial safety net which she thought she wouldn't have to use so soon.' 'I'm not a carer travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. 'I'm somebody that is very well paid and so I just feel a shame that I couldn't make it work.' Kate Garraway sells investment flat to pay off debt

In 2024, Garraway revealed she was spending £16,000 a month on care for her husband Derek Draper before he died in January that year at the age of 56 after a lengthy battle with the long-term effects of Covid. The Good Morning Britain (GMB) presenter said the cost of his basic care exceeded her ITV salary and did not factor in his therapies, the mortgage payments or other household expenses. Celebrity Traitors ‘lands first contestant' as BBC spinoff prepares for filming

The UK's celebrity version of hit BBC reality show The Traitors has reportedly landed its first contestant. Set to air on BBC One later this year, Celebrity Traitors UK will see its roster of famous stars split into two groups ('Traitors' and 'Faithfuls'), with the Faithfuls having to deduce who the Traitors in their midst really are. The first three series of The Traitors have been a significant hit for the BBC, with a fourth series currently in development. The forthcoming celebrity edition has yet to formally announce any contestants but a new report claims that TV presenter Kate Garraway has signed on to feature. Garraway is known for her presenting work on the ITV morning show Good Morning Britain. She previously competed on the ITV reality series I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2019, finishing in fourth place. A source told The Sun that Garraway will be travelling to Scotland to film the new Traitors series, alongside returning host Claudia Winkleman. 'Kate has signed her contract for Celebrity Traitors,' the source is quoted as saying. 'The BBC were avoiding stars who've done reality TV before but Kate's someone they want to support and champion. 'She's a great journalist and they think she's perfect for a seat at the table. She's had such a tough time since losing Derek and is a huge fan of the show so this is a dream come true for her.' Garraway's husband, Derek Draper, died last year of complications stemming from Covid. Over the past few years, Garraway has worked to spread awareness of long Covid and the financial challenges people currently face in positions of medical precarity. A spokesperson for the BBC responded to the claim that Garraway had signed on, telling Mail Online: 'The Traitors includes lies and deception, so it would be foolhardy for any Faithful to speculate before the game has begun.' The Independent has contacted a representative of Garraway for comment. While no contestants have been officially confirmed, a number of other prominent names – including comedian Stephen Fry and ex-rugby player Joe Marler – have been circling the rumour mill. A number of celebrities have, however, ruled themselves out of the running, including Oasis star Liam Gallagher and TV host Lorraine Kelly.

Kate Garraway's garden tree and fence damaged by Storm Eowyn

Kate Garraway said a tree and a fence in her garden have been damaged as Storm Eowyn swept the country, leaving many homes without power and some roads flooded. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 57, shared a video to Instagram showing branches scattered around her garden, as well as the work she has done to repair the fence. She wrote: 'Had a heck of a day trying to sort out storm damage – I know it's nothing compared to what many are facing so not complaining. 'Lost a tree height pyracantha (shrub)which had glorious orange berries in autumn and dainty white flowers in spring. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kate Garraway (@kategarraway) 'Still needs more chainsaw action but am hoping life will spring back at the roots. 'Very proud of my fence mend though (on the left) using old fencing from elsewhere. 'Something satisfying about being out in the fresh air though ( even if it was grey and raining) and now ready for a hot bath and bed. Hope everyone has had a great Sunday.' Met Office yellow weather warnings remain in place for wind and rain in parts of southern England, with gusts of up to 55-65mph possible in some areas. The rain warning is in place until 6am on Monday, bringing a chance of local flooding for parts of the UK. Some rail services, flights and ferries were paused due to the disruption from the storm. Garraway has won multiple National Television Awards for her documentaries about her husband Derek Draper, who suffered long-lasting symptoms from coronavirus. The emotional Kate Garraway: Derek's Story was released after his death at the age of 56 in January last year, detailing the final year of his life.
