Windsor gas prices set to spike

Fuel prices in Windsor are expected to rise in the coming days, according to industry figures analyst Dan McTeague. The president of Canadians for Affordable Energy is expecting an increase of as much as 12 cents per litre heading into the long weekend. 'You know, at least ... 10 cents of that is due to the market. The other two cents on average is because retailers have been offering gasoline at or below cost,' McTeague told CTV News. 073025 - gas prices in Windsor Gas prices in Windsor may see a spike. (Robert Lothian/CTV News Windsor) While prices often increase ahead of a long weekend due to increased interest, McTeague said in this case it's coincidental. Across the border, McTeague said U.S. markets have seen an increase of about 17 cents a gallon in recent days, in part due to supply 'crimping' and economic strength. 'At least tomorrow morning, hitting 138.9 [per litre] and likely by Friday morning hitting 140.9 [per litre],' he added. In Windsor's 'competitive' market, McTeague said gas stations can only afford to sell below the replacement cost for so long. 'So they have to reflect the price plus what it takes for them to run and operate their gas stations on an average basis.' To avoid some of the pain at the pump, he said, prices often see small decreases in the evening. 'For a lot of people, this is not comfortable. I mean, seeing prices in the 127 to 135 range is still too much,' McTeague said. After the long weekend, McTeague said drivers can expect a small decrease of about 2 cents.
