Parents charged after 7-year-old struck and killed while crossing Gastonia street unsupervised
GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An accident that claimed the life of a 7-year-old boy in Gastonia has now resulted in criminal charges against the parents, authorities announced. The incident occurred around 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, in the 1000 block of West Hudson Boulevard. Police said the child was crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk with his 10-year-old brother when he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee driven by a 76-year-old woman. First responders rushed the injured boy to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was later transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Despite the medical staff's efforts, the child died from his injuries and was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. MORE: Nearly $4,000 raised to support family of 7-year-old killed in Gastonia accident Police revealed that the young boy was unsupervised at the time of the accident. Now, both parents, Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins, are facing charges in connection with his death. The parents have been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect, and misdemeanor child neglect. The decision, police said, was not made lightly. 'In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children,' the Gastonia Police Department said. Police emphasized that there was no indication of speeding or driver negligence. The 76-year-old driver is cooperating with investigators and, at this time, faces no charges. It happened Tuesday evening on the 1000 block of West Hudson Boulevard. That vehicle was being driven by a 76-year-old woman. Jenkins was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. According to police, an investigation revealed that Jenkins and the other child were unsupervised at the time of the incident. Both of his parents were then charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect, and misdemeanor child neglect. The investigation also revealed that there was no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, so she has not been charged. Nearly $4,000 raised to support family of 7-year-old killed in Gastonia accident
GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The community is rallying around the family of 7-year-old Legend, who tragically lost his life after being struck by a car near his neighborhood. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help support the grieving family, and so far, nearly $4,000 has already been raised. Legend was crossing West Hudson Boulevard with his sibling just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, when he was struck by a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. He was rushed to a local medical center with life-threatening injuries and later transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Despite extensive efforts to save him, including being revived close to 12 times, he passed away around 10 p.m. that evening, family said. On the fundraising page, Legend's mother shared a heartfelt message: 'My baby was only 7, about to be 8 in August, and he was tragically killed by a car accident right outside of his neighborhood. He was a momma's boy up and down. He was smart, creative, and even if he was ill, would always keep a smile. He loved playing any sports. He was truly a warrior, but after being revived close to twelve times, he unfortunately passed away. We ask that y'all send prayers for our family in this time of heartbreak, and if you wish to give, anything would be very grateful.' Balloons and flowers now mark the spot where Legend's life was cut short. Family members and members of the community have been stopping by to pay their respects. 'I cried as anybody would with a child being killed,' Stewart said. 'He was just a cute, sweet kid. My son would go and cut his hair, and they said he was respectful to adults. He'd say yes, ma'am, and yes, sir.' The collision remains under investigation. Police said the driver, a 76-year-old woman, has not been charged at this time. Just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, officers responded to the reported collision on the 1000 block of West Hudson Blvd. Police said a seven-year-old and another juvenile were crossing the street when a Jeep Cherokee hit them in the eastbound lane. The seven-year-old was taken to a local medical center with life-threatening injuries before being taken to the Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Gastonia boy surprised with law enforcement, K9 Bo at his birthday party
GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Gastonia boy got a big surprise on his birthday. 3-year-old Rylen's mother called the Gastonia Police Department's non-emergency number Saturday afternoon, asking if there was a patrol unit in her area and if they could drive by so her son could see them. The department did more than just that. Gastonia Police commanders asked for volunteers, and seven officers, a Civilian Crash investigator, a Gaston County deputy and K9 Bo all came out to wish Rylen a happy 3rd birthday.
