Green light for redevelopment at award-winning Ayrshire holiday park

Plans to modernise a fire-damaged holiday park in Ayrshire have been approved. Owners of the Bennane Shore Holiday Park, in Lendalfoot, previously lodged plans to carry out improvement works at their facilities building. The holiday park was hit by a substantial fire in December 2023, forcing the site to close for a time. Now work will get underway to carry out a makeover at the site- after council planners gave the scheme their blessing. The agents in the proposals were Manchester-based Gateley Smithers Purslow and the applicant was Graham Brown, of Bennane Shore Holiday Park. The proposals include: * Modifications to the entrance and reception to provide a 'more modern, striking and welcoming area,' accessible for all with level thresholds * A relaxing outdoor dining space off the Bistro area with an awnings structure to provide 'flexible open and closed spaces' overlooking the Ailsa Craig * An outdoor Spa Relax area within a partially enclosed decked space * Some minor alterations - infilling of external windows and relocation of a fire escape door to facilitate the new changes and: * New cladding to part of the main front elevation. A design and access statement read: 'Bennane Shore Holiday Park is an award winning luxury Holiday Park and Spa. Situated in Ayrshire on Scotland's stunning west coast, it is a seafront holiday accommodation with a luxury, on-site spa and bistro, with panoramic views of Ailsa Craig and Ayrshire's natural coastline. 'Ordinarily it is used as a Holiday Park with a spa facility, bistro and adjacent private residency for the park owners. The Holiday Park is open to members and the general public.' The agents also said that the amount of development proposed 'will not' adversely harm the existing building or setting, but rather 'enhance the service offer' unique to the area. They added: 'There are no major landscaping works proposed other than some adjustments to the ramp access at the main entrance. Two new escape ramps are proposed to the outdoor dining area and Spa Relax areas.' The exterior alterations also include the installation of a mono-pitched retractable roof awning style glazed extension to the rear of the property (to provide an extended outdoor seating area associated with the existing restaurant) and a partially enclosed flat roof timber slatted extension with decking (to the spa relaxation area) to the rear of the building. In approving the plans, subject to conditions, council papers said: 'The proposals will allow the building to be brought back into use and will support the established holiday park business and local economy.'

Community centre gutted by fire reopens after rebuild

A community centre and GP surgery gutted in a fire two years ago has been rebuilt and reopened. The fire at the Gotham Memorial Hall, which also housed the Orchard Surgery Practice, broke out in February 2023. The fire was described as "soul-destroying" by hall trustees at the time, and work to rebuild the hall has been ongoing ever since. The hall reopened with some environmentally friendly modifications, including air source heat pumps and solar panels. Martin Raven, chairman of the hall trustees, said: "Originally, we were obviously intensely upset, but after two days we started to see it as an opportunity to try to modernise things." Mike Boast, commercial director at Gateley Smithers Purslow, who oversaw the project, said: "I grew up in the village, so it has been very close to my heart, and with the building being at the heart of the community, it was very important for me to deliver the project."
