Flash flood warning in St. Louis; flooding now after heavy rain
UPDATE: Flash Flood Warning including Saint Louis City, Madison and St. Clair counties through 6:30 p.m. Avoid flooded areas in path of warning. ST. LOUIS – Flash flooding has emerged around the St. Louis region after heavy rain Tuesday afternoon. FOX 2 has learned about flash flooding concerns around various streets in north and south St. Louis City. There are also some concerns near Downtown St. Louis and in the Metro East right across state lines. Flash flooding concerns arrived after a storm system intensified and brought heavy rain around 2 p.m. Tuesday. It's estimated around 2-3 inches fell in some parts of St. Louis within the span of an hour. MoDOT's Gateway Guide cameras have detected flash flooding around I-55 near Lafayette Avenue, Missouri Route 100 near Jefferson Avenue and I-70 at McKinley Bridge among other places. St. Louis radar: See a map of current weather here The storm system is moving east, but flash flood concerns may persist for some time. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid flooded areas where possible. Some afternoon traffic delays could emerge as well. Right now, there is a flood advisory in effect for the following counties: St. Louis City, St. Louis and St. Charles (Missouri) Madison, St. Clair (Illinois) through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Significant backups on I-44 near Rolla and St. James; traffic stalled 20 miles
ROLLA, Mo. – Drivers are dealing with significant traffic backups Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 44 near Rolla. MoDOT reports that some drivers are backed up as much as 20 miles on the I-44 from Rolla to St. James. According to MoDOT's Gateway Guide, crews are responding to a crash in the westbound lanes of I-44 in Phelps County near milemarker 179. As of noon, some westbound traffic was stalled all the way to milemarker 195. MoDOT shares the following message: 'Motorists are advised to avoid this stretch of Interstate 44. There is currently no estimate on the clearing of the incident. Westbound motorists should exit as early as possible to seek alternate routes or a safe place to wait out the closure.' The backups come one day after a major snowstorm slammed much of Missouri, anywhere from several inches to nearly a foot in southern parts of the state. Some parts of the highway are still covered with snow. How many AMI days are left for Missouri schools? Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible as crews work to clear the scene. U.S. Route 63 southbound can serve as an alternate for getting to Springfield, Missouri. Motorists can use U.S. Route 63 southbound at Rolla to U.S. Route 60 westbound to U.S. Route 65 northbound at Springfield to return back to I-44. HAZMAT concerns on Highway 61 in Lincoln County after vehicle fire
LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. – Emergency officials are warning of a possible HAZMAT situation on Highway 61 in Lincoln County after a vehicle fire Wednesday morning on Highway 61. Lincoln County Emergency Management officials say Highway 61 is shut down at Highway K as crews investigate the situation. List: St. Louis area school & business closings Drivers are asked to avoid Highway 61 and use alternate routes as crews attend to the matter. Lincoln County Emergency Management says there is a 'possible threat to life or property' amid this investigation and 'Responsive action SHOULD be taken immediately.'
