Sports Mahakumbh from August 2; over 15K athletes to participate: Sports minister

Haryana's minister of state for sports, Gaurav Gautam, on Thursday said that 'Sports Mahakumbh 2025' will begin in two phases starting August 2, with 15,410 athletes from across the state participating in 26 different disciplines. Medal winners to receive sports gradation certificates, which help in availing 3% reservation in government jobs for sportspersons. The sports minister said that according to Haryana's sports policy, the medal winners of the sports mahakumbh will receive sports gradation certificates, which help in availing 3% reservation in government jobs for sportspersons. Gautam said that due to the state's excellent sports policy and consistent medal wins at national and international events, Haryana has emerged as a leader in Indian sports. Despite representing only 2% of the country's population, Haryana's athletes contribute to 60% of India's medal wins at international competitions. Addressing the press conference at the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh, the sports minister expressed pride that Haryana athletes have won medals in each of the past five Olympic Games, bringing home 15 medals and making the nation proud. In both phases of the event, a total of 2,102 medals will be awarded. The second phase will be held in the last week of August. The minister said that Haryana's Sports Mahakumbh will be bigger than many national-level sports events. He said around 8,000 athletes participate in the Khelo India Youth Games organised by the Sports Authority of India, while over 15,000 will compete in this Mahakumbh. Gautam assured that the selection of athletes from districts was conducted fairly under the supervision of district sports officers. Proper arrangements for food, kits, and accommodation have been made to ensure athletes face no inconvenience. Any athlete across the state can report issues related to facilities or technical arrangements directly to the special coordination committee formed under the additional sports director to oversee the event.

Athletes from all 22 districts and Haryana Sports University, Rai (Sonipat), will participate. In both phases of the event, a total of 2,102 medals will be awarded — 836 in the first phase and 1,266 in the second. The second phase will be held in the last week of August. Maruti Suzuki has commenced admissions for the inaugural batch at its newly established Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sonipat, Haryana. This marks the company's fourth JIM in India and the second in the state after Uncha up in partnership with the Government of Haryana at the Master Atul Government ITI campus, JIM Sonipat will train over 100 students annually across four trades, which includes Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Machinist, Welder, and Fitter. The first academic session is set to begin in September institute is backed by a Rs 10 crore investment from Maruti Suzuki and follows a dual-training model that blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. The curriculum is aligned with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and incorporates Japanese best practices, including safety, quality and discipline. Praising the initiative, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Gaurav Gautam, called it a valuable contribution to the Skill India Mission and Haryana's economic growth. "Maruti Suzuki's commitment to skill development in Haryana through its state-of-the-art JIMs at Uncha Majra and now at Sonipat is truly commendable. By training youth and equipping them with industry-relevant skills, the Company is paving the way for their brighter future and contributing to Haryana's development and economic growth. This is in line with the Hon'ble Prime Minister's 'Skill India Mission' and I applaud Maruti Suzuki's efforts in this space," he Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, emphasised the institute's role in fostering employability and a strong work ethic. "We are committed to supporting the Government of India's 'Skill India Mission' by training youth and making them industry ready. After setting up our first JIM in Haryana at Uncha Majra, we are thankful to the Government of Haryana for providing us the opportunity to set up the second JIM in the state. We are confident that both JIMs will prepare the students for opportunities across the automobile ecosystem and contribute to progress of Haryana," he added. The Haryana government has provided the land and building for JIM Sonipat, while Maruti Suzuki has undertaken civil infrastructure upgrades, set up an assembly line for real-world training, and will oversee operations and training JIM initiative stems from a 2016 bilateral agreement between the Governments of India and Japan aimed at training 30,000 Indian youth in manufacturing skills over 10 years. To date, over 2,100 students have graduated from Maruti Suzuki's three existing JIMs in Mehsana, Uncha Majra, and Suzuki's broader skill development program includes upgrading 23 government ITIs, equipping 130 institutes with EV-related training tools, and operating 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres across India. Maruti Suzuki launches 4th Japan-India institute for manufacturing in Sonipat

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced the commencement of admissions for the first batch at its newly launched Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sonipat, which marks the automobile major's fourth JIM in India and its second in Haryana. The institute, located at the Master Atul Government ITI in Sonipat, is set to admit over 100 students annually across four key trades: Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Machinist, Welder, and Fitter. Classes for the inaugural batch are scheduled to begin in September 2025. Maruti Suzuki has invested over Rs 10 crore in establishing the facility. Affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and accredited by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the JIM will implement a dual training system. This approach blends theoretical classroom instruction with hands-on industrial training, and includes modules on safety, quality, discipline, kaizen, and other essential Japanese manufacturing practices . Gaurav Gautam, Haryana's Minister of State for Youth Empowerment & Entrepreneurship, praised Maruti Suzuki for contributing to the state's economic development. He said, "Maruti Suzuki's commitment to skill development in Haryana through its state-of-the-art JIMs at Uncha Majra and now at Sonipat is truly commendable." Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, emphasized the company's commitment to skill development. "We are confident JIM Sonipat will enhance employability and instill a disciplined work ethic rooted in world-class manufacturing standards," he said. The project is a result of a public-private partnership under which the Haryana government has provided land and infrastructure, while Maruti Suzuki has upgraded the facilities, introduced real-life simulation assembly lines, and will oversee the institute's operations. The JIMs are part of a broader Indo-Japanese collaboration aimed at training 30,000 Indian youth over 10 years. Since inception, over 2,100 students have graduated from Maruti Suzuki's existing JIMs. Through its broader skill development initiatives, Maruti Suzuki has supported 23 ITIs, established 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres, and spent over Rs 450 crore in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions up to Financial Year 2024-25.
