Cornish Pirates overcame a 13-point half-time deficit to beat Nottingham 35-34 and finish fourth in the were helped by some wayward kicking from the visitors, who missed four conversions and three penalties in the clash at the Mennaye. Nottingham had a bonus point secured within 22 minutes as David Williams went over twice alongside tries from Harry Graham and Ryan Olowofela to put them 20-7 ahead as Matt Pritchard replied for the hosts. Chester Ribbons' try reduced the gap only for Jay Ecclesfield to go over soon after as Nottingham led 27-14 at the extended their advantage to 34-14 soon after the restart thanks to a try from a driving maul before the hosts came back. Milo Hallam, Harry Yates and Harry Hocking all crossed in a seven-minute spell to put Pirates ahead before a scoreless final 20 minutes. "We probably didn't deserve that one," Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall. "I think the rugby gods were on our side a little bit and they left a lot of kicking points out there. "But then you look at first half and second half and it was night and day."We had a bit more energy about us, we looked a bit too pretty in that first half by playing a bit of structured stuff, rather than going back to the fundamental of winning collisions, winning the one on ones and that was the message at half time - we were looking for the perfect picture, let's take somebody on one on one and things will happen."

Pirates beat Ampthill to seal sixth successive win

Despite Josh King's early try, Pirates trailed 23-7 with five minutes of the first half to go as tries for Kaden Pearce-Paul and Byron Sharwood, along with three Josh Barton penalties, put the visitors in control. But Jack Forsythe and Billy Young went over to make it 23-21 at the break before Matt McNab put the hosts in front after the Marshall's try levelled it at 28-28 soon after, but King's second try, and a Bruce-Hosyton penalty with eight minutes left, opened up a 10-point Ampthill ensured they left Cornwall with two losing bonus points as Lekima Ravuvu forced his way over with a minute left."It was a good contest," Cattle said."That first half. we had a couple of tries held over after a real strong maul and Will Trewin was through on an inside ball that didn't go to hand."Our discipline was poor in that first 20 or 30 minutes [with] eight or nine penalties in the first half."The penalty count was an issue, but we addressed that at half-time."I've got to give our maul credit because I think that gave us a foothold in the game."

The former Wales Under-18 player struggled to break into the Cherry and Whites' side, playing for them only in the Premiership Rugby Cup and European Challenge Cattle says the forward, who helped Pirates to a best-ever second place in the Championship last season, is still an excellent player:"The opportunity didn't quite work out at Gloucester for him, but we still feel he's got that ability to bounce back up," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall."He was a really integral part of our group down here, so to bring him back, and after his experience up at Gloucester, I'm sure we are going to get a better player for that as well."Pirates have extended the deal of a number of the squad, as well as agreeing to sign Exeter's Chester Ribbons permanently and bring in Welsh back Ben Cambriani. "We're cutting our cloth as a club, as we always do," Cattle said about new additions to the squad."We're pretty happy with the quality we've kept together."We know we need to add to that a bit later on in pre-season, but we're on a firm footing and we've got some good quality coming in as well."
