Postponed Columbia County Unity Fundraiser to happen Saturday at new location
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Postponed from its original date due to the threat of severe weather, the Columbia County Unity Fundraiser to benefit the families of Columbia County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Sikes and Deputy Gavin White will be held this Saturday. The event will be held at the Augusta Elks Lodge located at 205 Elkdom Court a few blocks from Westside High School. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Food trucks and vendors will be present, as well as other activities, including a bounce house with a 60-foot obstacle course, a foam party, a visit from a favorite Disney princess, and tons of unique and antique vehicles, with a vehicle contest. Entry into the car show is $10 per vehicle entry. There will also be a silent auction with a RecTeq Grill, spa packages, a 12-foot utility trailer, Dewalt tool set, Guitar Pull tickets, gift cards, gift baskets and more. All proceeds go to benefit the families of the deputies involved in the deadly shooting that claimed the life of one Columbia County deputy on Saturday, April 26th, and severely wounded another. Columbia County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Sikes was killed in the line of duty Saturday, April 26th, and another, Columbia County Sheriff's Office Deputy Gavin White, was critically wounded when a suspect opened fire on the two deputies along I-20 near Exit 194 at Belair Road. It happened while three Columbia County Sheriff's Deputies, which included Deputies Sikes and White, were serving a Temporary Protective Order to Montgomery during a traffic stop. The suspect, James Blake Montgomery, allegedly opened fire on the three deputies with a 9mm AR Pistol after they turned to walk to their vehicles. The other on-scene deputy has not received much attention, but he is credited with saving Deputy White's life. Columbia County Sheriff`s Office Deputy Gavin White was critically wounded when the suspect opened fire on him and the other on-scene deputies. Deputy Andrew Brown, when he noticed that White had been shot and was not dead, dragged him past several law enforcement vehicles while still under fire from the suspect and got Deputy White into one of the county vehicles where Deputy Brown drove him through the gunfire in an effort to get him to a hospital. According to Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Deputy White was released from the hospital Thursday, May 1st, and was returned home where he continued his recovery. Deputy Sikes was laid to rest Monday, May 6th, following a public ceremony that saw Georgia Governor Brian Kemp attend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. First Responders Night at SRP Park honoring Deputy Brandon Sikes
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC. (WJBF) – It was First Responders Night at tonight's Green Jackets game. I was there where, before the first pitch, they held a moment of silence for fallen Columbia County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Sikes. 'The North Augusta Public Safety is going to have its color guard out as they walk on the field to salute the flag and honor America and as we do that and finish that up we will have a moment of silence on the tragedy that happened a few weeks ago in Columbia County,' said Brandon Greene, General Manager, Augusta GreenJackets. The GreenJackets auctioned off two jerseys signed by the entire team and other raffle items given by different businesses in the community. 'It was a no-brainer, yeah, we can help,' said Justin Rousseau, Volunteer with Fire K' There's a way for us to do it, and partnering with local businesses was a done deal. We were able to bring a bunch of great items out here, and at the end of the night, we expect a big return to go to the families.' All the proceeds from the raffle, the live auction, and all Budweiser sold from the left-field bar will be donated to support the families of Sikes and Deputy Gavin White, who was also shot on April 26th. It's all made possible through a Non-Profit called Fire K. 'First partnership and it's been good to come alongside people that are like minded in the community, 'said Phillip Weathers, President and Founder, Fire K. 'Justins been doing this for over a year with North Augusta Public Safety and being able to come along beside them and help with something that's as important as helping these families can't think of a more worthy cause.' Baseball fans are happy to come out and support the first responders in our area. 'I'm a retired Firefighter myself, so you know I'm a first responder in that capacity, and it's great to be honored, and it's great to honor other first responders,' said Mike Taylor, Baseball Fan. Fans say it's the least they can do to honor and appreciate all the first responders do for us. 'They do a really tough job every day, and any little bit of support we can give them is great,' said Heather Tucker, Baseball Fan. 'It's important that the people who do this every day know that public and the people who live here are behind them.,' said Dick Tucker, Baseball fan. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Kerry put away Roscommon with three-goal scoring spree in second half
All-Ireland SFC: Kerry 3-18 Roscommon 0-17 A 10-point win is a 10-point win in any money, but Kerry packed this victory, more or less, into a 10-minute window in the second half when David Clifford, Paul Geaney and Gavin White raised green flags to catapult their side from a five-point lead into a 14-point one. That is the long and the short of this Group 2 opener, played under tar-melting temperatures in front of a paltry 6,814 spectators in Fitzgerald Stadium. Having been somewhat flattered to lead by five at the interval having played with a stiff breeze in Killarney, Kerry needed Clifford's 50th-minute goal to kill off the Roscommon resistance and start to put the game beyond the visitors. Kerry had Diarmuid O'Connor back in midfield after a two-month absence – and he marked his return with two points in a solid performance – but Paudie Clifford's absence was more keenly felt by a Kerry side that seemed to lack energy for much of the first half. READ MORE Roscommon took the lead in the first minute through Ronan Daly's point, and four minutes later Brian Stack doubled their lead, and the seven changes manager Davy Burke made from the team that were beaten by Galway seemed to have the desired effect. Kerry were back to parity by the ninth minute through Paul Geaney's mark and a Diarmuid O'Connor point, but Keith Doyle kicked Roscommon back into the lead after 12 minutes. Kerry were back in front two minutes later when Clifford converted a two-point free on the sideline. Then Eddie Nolan and Joe O'Connor traded points, and Ben O'Carroll levelled it at 0-5 apiece in the 25th minute. Seán O'Shea converted a two-point free, and though Daire Cregg's 27th-minute point halved the deficit, Diarmuid O'Connor and Joe O'Connor raised white flags and then a breach of the three-up rule by Roscommon presented O'Shea with another two-point free, which he converted to see Kerry take a 0-11 to 0-6 half-time lead. Photograph: Laszlo Geczo/Inpho The sides exchanged two points apiece in the 15 minutes after the restart before Clifford cut through the Roscommon defence to score the game's first goal to make it 1-13 to 0-8. Kerry added two more points before O'Shea and Paul Geaney played a slick one-two for the latter to tap in a goal on 54 minutes as the Kingdom went 2-15 to 0-8 clear. Kerry's third goal arrived on the hour mark with White palming Paul Geaney's inviting pass, and though Roscommon finished with two-point scores from Daly, Conor Cox and Diarmuid Murtagh, this was as elementary a win for Kerry as was expected. Kerry now prepare for a rematch with Cork in a fortnight back in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, while Roscommon host Meath the same weekend in Dr Hyde Park.
