Streaming Tea: 'Gears Of War' Movie Director Named; First Image Of Nicholas Cage's 'Spider-Noir' Drops
Big things are coming to streaming platforms in the coming years, especially in the world of adaptations. For one, the long-benched 'Gears of War' movie has finally found its director, one who won't shy away from any action-packed goodness. Meanwhile, the first official image of the highly-anticipated 'Spider-Noir' series has been released, alongside some juicy news. All that and more in today's article. David Leitch Tapped To Direct 'Gears Of War' Movie After years of silence, a director for the proposed movie adaptation of 'Gears of War' has finally been named! After a lengthy behind-closed-door discussion, Netflix has finally secured David Leitch to direct one of Xbox's biggest game franchises. For those unaware, Leitch is known for his work in creating action-packed hits such as 'The Fall Guy,' 'John Wick,' and 'Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw'. Furthermore, it has also been confirmed that Jon Spaihts, known for working alongside Denis Villeneuve in bringing the recent 'Dune' movies to life, will be penning the script for the coming adaptation. It has also been confirmed by Netflix that the company and Spaihts will be working alongside The Coalition Studio, the Canadian game developer that brought the original franchise to life. It has also been reported that Leitch and his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick, will help produce this film through their joint production company, 87North Productions. The Coalition will also contribute to funding the film and help bring it to life. With all these details, one can't help but be intrigued by what Leitch and Netflix discussed behind closed doors, but unfortunately, it will stay under wraps as both parties refuse to comment on the deal. This is incredibly interesting, especially since Netflix has been trying to develop the movie since it got the rights to it back in 2022. However, the streaming giant refused to share any major updates about the production until Dave Bautista himself called out and pressured the company to release new information about the project earlier this year. We can only speculate if this long delay and eventual call-out resulted in this almost secretive discussion. What we do know is that the movie is in good hands, as both the director and writer have had an incredible track record with recent films, specifically for gritty sci-fi war movies filled with over-the-top stunts and action. How it will turn out, only time will tell. MGM+ & Prime Video Unveil Images Of 'Spider-Noir' It's been a hot minute since Nicolas Cage donned a supersuit, but it's nice to see him back in the saddle once again! As you may have known, ever since his showing in the beloved animated movie 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' as Spider-Man Noir, the veteran actor was given the rare opportunity to bring the titular character to life in its very own live-action film. With the hype surrounding the project, several behind-the-scenes and production images have already been leaked online, namely, shots of Cage in costume on top of set items, but never an official image. That is, until today. After months of waiting, MGM+ and Prime Video finally unveiled the first official shot of the highly-anticipated film at Amazon's annual upfront presentation last Monday. Though the image is in black and white to stick to the noir theming of the show, it has been confirmed that the series will be available in both black and white and colour to suit the audiences' tastes. Based on the Spider-Man Noir Marvel comic, the series is about 'an ageing and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero.' Though no official release date has been announced, it has been confirmed that the series is set to drop in 2026 and will be available to be streamed on MGM+ and on Prime Video. But it won't just be Cage who appears on the screen; Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Jack Huston will also be there. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the series will feature guest stars such as Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster. For those behind the camera, it has been confirmed that Harry Bradbeer will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Dan Shear will be on board as executive producers. The fact that the show has eight – count 'em – eight executive producers demonstrates that this is going to be a big series which is setting itself up to be one that we won't soon forget. David Leitch in Talks to Direct Netflix's Big-Budget GEARS OF WAR Movie — GeekTyrant
It looks like Gears of War is finally getting the cinematic firepower it deserves. David Leitch, who recently directed the The Fall Guy , is now in negotiations to helm Netflix's long-gestating feature adaptation of the legendary Xbox video game series. This marks a big move for Netflix, which scooped up the rights back in 2022 and has been quietly putting together the pieces for what it hopes will become a major franchise. Leitch will produce the movie alongside his wife and creative partner Kelly McCormick under their 87North banner. They'll be teaming up with The Coalition, the Vancouver-based studio that currently steers the Gears games. Gears of War is basically testosterone-fueled sci-fi warfare turned up to 11. The story is set on a dying planet where subterranean monsters called the Locust emerge to wage war on the last scraps of human civilization. At the center is Marcus Fenix, a grizzled, battle-scarred ex-soldier leading Delta Squad on what's essentially a suicide mission to save humanity. The movie is being written by Jon Spaihts, best known for Dune and Prometheus . With him handling the script, fans can expect a grounded, cinematic world that still captures the grit, madness, and scale of the games. Leitch seems like a natural fit for Gears . His action pedigree is tough to beat. Hhe's the guy behind Bullet Train , Atomic Blonde , Deadpool 2 , John Wick , and Hobbs & Shaw . He knows his way around an action scene, and more importantly, he knows how to make action feel personal, stylish, and character-driven. Netflix's plan is to lead with this feature film, follow up with an adult animated series, and expand from there… assuming audiences watch and like what they see. According to Gears of War head Rod Fergusson, the movie will not be set in the same reality of the game. It will be its own thing and tell its own story, a story that will not be dependent on the games. He previously explained: 'In order for the movie to be successful, it has to be a great movie first and a Gears movie second. Basically the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, 'oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.'' Fergusson added: 'I've heard of other franchises who come with this really large story Bible and this really sort of, here are all the rules now go and deal with 700 pages of how you live in our world. 'When we did it, we were two pages. I was like, 'Here's two pages of thou shall nots and recommendations.' We want people to have the freedom to have new ideas and to take things differently.' It was also said that there are still certain staples of the franchise that will be true for the movie. Fergusson revealed that it should be set on Sera and that it should star certain characters that are familiar to fans. The gears are in motion. And with Leitch at the helm, there's a real shot this adaptation could be badass! Source: THR

This Netflix movie based on a popular video game now has a director
Netflix is riding the wave of popularity for video game adaptations by commissioning a Gears of War movie. The streamer is recruiting a former stuntman turned director to helm the action spectacle. Per The Hollywood Reporter, David Leitch is in negotiations to direct Gears of War for Netflix. Jon Spaihts, the Academy Award-nominated co-writer of Dune, will pen the Gears of War screenplay. Recommended Videos Leitch and Kelly McCormick, Leitch's wife and creative partner, will produce the Netflix adaptation through their 87 North banner. Netflix will partner with The Coalition Studio, the Canadian video game developer, to produce the feature film adaptation. Netflix acquired the rights to Gears of War in 2022. The streamer has plans to make a blockbuster adaptation of the video game before expanding to other mediums, including an adult animated series. Released in 2006, Gears of War is a third-person shooter game set on the fictional Earth-like planet of Sera. With society on the brink of extinction, humans engage in a war with vicious underground creatures known as the Locust Horde. The game follows soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago of the Delta Squad in a fight to save humanity against the Locust forces. Gears of War became the fastest-selling video game of 2006 and one of the best-selling franchises for the Xbox 360. There have been eight Gears of War video games, which include the main series, spinoffs, and prequels. Leitch began his career as a stunt performer, doubling for Brad Pitt and then working on two Matrix movies. After working as the uncredited co-director of John Wick, Leitch helmed his first feature with 2017's Atomic Blonde. Since Atomic Blonde, Leitch has become a reliable action director backed by excellent stuntwork. Leitch's other films include Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. Leitch's next movie is 2026's How to Rob a Bank, a crime thriller with Nicolas Hoult, Pete Davidson, and Anna Sawai.

David Leitch Is Going Into Battle Directing ‘Gears of War'
The 'John Wick' filmmaker has signed on to helm the movie based on the hit Xbox video game franchise. Netflix's long-anticipated film adaptation of Xbox's premier video game franchise, Gears of War, is finally gathering some momentum. Filmmaker David Leitch (The Fall Guy) has signed on to helm the blockbuster take on the Gears of War game series for Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that he and his production company 87North will be partnering up with the Coalition Studio, the video game's developers, for the movie. The script will be written by Dune scribe Jon Spaihts. The game is based in a universe where the planet Sera is close to total societal collapse and humanity faces a new monstrous threat: the Locust. The franchise follows the Delta Squad, a regiment under the command of Sergeant Marcus Fenix, who hopes to clear his name and the ragtag army by taking on the threat through gratuitous chainsaw-gunning. They're humanity's last line of defense against invasion. Netflix has had the rights to make the games into a franchise since 2022. Leitch's involvement begs the question if some of his frequent actor collaborators might take part in the action. The film follows Netflix's past video game adaptations which include Castlevania, Sonic Prime, and the upcoming Resident Evil and Horizon Zero Dawn.

The best video game trailers of all time
Table of Contents Table of Contents Dead Island Halo 3 Gears of War Assassin's Creed: Revelations Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Final Fantasy 7: Remake The art of the video game trailer is a delicate one. A trailer needs to get people excited to play an upcoming video game, while ideally being representative of what that game will actually be. However, it has become clear that plenty of trailers — at least the ones without gameplay — are more interested in generating hype than being especially faithful. These are our first glimpses at the world, characters, and maybe even bosses of a game, but presented like a short film. Because trailers can be so different from what the final game becomes, we wanted to find the best video game trailers judged only on their effectiveness as trailers and not take into consideration how accurate or good the game they are advertising was. It is just as likely that a terrible game and one of the best games of all time will have an amazing trailer. After digging through the archives of hundreds of video game trailers from every console generation, we've come up with a list of the best video game trailers ever made. Recommended Videos Dead Island Where else could we start than one of the most infamous trailers ever released? There had been plenty of 'artsy' trailers before Dead Island, and we will talk about them later in this list, but something about this one felt different. The structure of the trailer mostly being shot in reverse of a family fighting — and losing — to survive against an oncoming zombie horde was gripping and emotional despite seeing how it would all end up from the start. It felt distinct from any other zombie game at the time, which were all about action or horror. Dead Island chose to feel more personal and melancholic. The soundtrack here alone still gives us chills. As a short film, it is a masterfully crafted and effective piece of media. If you were hoping the game would be anything like this trailer, though, then you could make a strong case for it being false advertising. Halo 3 The marketing cycle for Halo 3 was unreal. If you weren't there to experience it, it is hard to describe just how ever-present this game was, even in the mainstream. The tagline for the game was simply 'Believe,' and of all the trailers we got for the game, the one that we still think about shares that simple title. Instead of making a CGI, gameplay, or live-action trailer (which Bungie still did, of course), this trailer was made using a diorama. A sullen piano track guides the camera across various scenes, from exhausted, wounded, and terrified marines to Brutes getting blasted by explosives and Hunters tearing through human resistance. Despite there being no movement, it is incredibly dynamic and shows a deeper layer to this desperate war than you get behind the visor of a super soldier. We close on a shot of our hero, Master Chief, apparently defeated in the hands of a Brute. The only motion in the trailer is Chief lifting his head before 'Believe' comes on screen. Perfect. Gears of War Before Dead Island, Gears of War was the first game to craft a trailer that ended up being a radical departure from the game. Yes, the world of Gears was incredibly dire and hopeless, but that emotion typically took a backseat to the bombastic firefights and macho banter between the tank-like characters. This trailer, on the other hand, painted the world as it would feel if it weren't a video game. The cover of Mad World was used to incredible effect as Marcus wanders through a delapitated city, stalked by monsters. It really sells the feeling of desperation and hopelessness of that world where monsters are, in fact, real. The series would attempt to recreate this tone with its two sequels to various effect, but this first attempt was the one that inspired the trend. Assassin's Creed: Revelations Say what you will about Ubisoft, but that company knows how to make a killer trailer. The Assassin's Creed games, in particular, have had some of the most stunning and well-directed trailers of all time, with Assassin's Creed: Revelations being the peak. Unlike the last few entries, which featured slow and mournful soundtracks, this one uses the upbeat tempo of a WoodKid track. It is another instance of showing the end first before cutting back to show an aged Ezio traveling across land and sea to where the series first began. After shrugging off an arrow, an action sequence that would make Zack Snyder blush kicks off to show the insane fight choreography and brutality of the combat. At the very end, we get the promise of the game tying everything back to the origins as Ezio sees a vision of Altair beside him while a noose is tied around his neck. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Before every new Smash game, we always ask, 'Who's going to be in it?' Things were a little different when we learned about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch because we all assumed that we would be losing characters. After all, there was no way we could get the entire roster from Smash for Wii U, especially the guest characters like Snake, Ryu, and Cloud in Ultimate, right? Well, Nintendo left no room for doubt when it released the Everyone is here! trailer. It starts out slow, going over the classic characters we all expected and numbering them, but around halfway through, after confirming Cloud and Snake, it drops the bomb that 'Everyone is here!' The trailer doesn't just show us everyone from this insanely huge roster, but gives each character a moment to shine and show off their personality or moveset for a moment. No matter who you are a fan of, you get at least one moment to feel seen by this trailer. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate proved it was worthy of that subtitle with this trailer alone, and someone only got better with each character it added after the fact. Final Fantasy 7: Remake One of our favorite types of trailers are the ones we can't quite place at first. We love those opening few moments as we search for clues and make guesses as to what it could be, or if it is just something completely new. That's how the reveal for Final Fantasy 7: Remake was in 2015. At this point, fans had been jerked around back and forth on whether or not such a thing could even be done, so even when we saw the giant pipes running through a metropolotin city, we didn't want to get our hopes up. The narration was likewise ambiguous. And then we saw the train and playground with that ominous bass chord sting leading to that trilling piano. If you weren't there for it, we highly suggest looking up reactions to this trailer and watching the realization hit people once they realize that, yes, Final Fantasy 7: Remake is happening. Or, as the narrator concludes, 'But let us embrace whatever it brings, for they are coming back. At last, the promise has been made.' It is hard to imagine another trailer speaking to any group of fans as strongly as this one for a long, long time.
