Netflix's latest video game adaptations finally got some updates — and my nerves are officially kicking in
'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War' are easily in my top three favorite video game franchises of all time. Nothing can ever quite dethrone 'The Last of Us' from the No. 1 spot, but these two dystopian worlds have stuck with me and I find myself replaying them more than just about anything else. So when I first heard Netflix was adapting them into movies, I couldn't help but feel excited (even if my expectations were... cautiously low). For a while, though, updates were scarce, and months of radio silence had me wondering if the projects had been quietly shelved. Thankfully, both titles have gotten some encouraging news in the past few days. Director Francis Lawrence recently told IGN: 'Bioshock is still in development. I just actually just got a draft. We have a meeting with the writer [Justin Rhodes], so that's definitely a very strong possibility as well.' He also acknowledged the uphill battle in adapting the game: 'It's a tricky adaptation, so there's lots of things to figure out and to get right. There's regime changes at Netflix, and so things stall out and get re-energized and stall out and get re-energized, and I think we're in a pretty good place, honestly.' Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter shared that 'David Leitch is in negotiations to helm Gears of War.' Leitch, who is best known for 'The Fall Guy,' 'Atomic Blonde,' and 'Bullet Train', has a knack for slick, stylized action, which makes him a solid pick for the franchise. Netflix hasn't commented on the deal just yet, but Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick are also expected to produce the movie alongside The Coalition. These aren't massive updates, but they confirm one crucial thing: both adaptations are still alive and moving forward. And being such a huge fan of 'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War,' I can't deny that my excitement is growing. I think most of us can agree that video game adaptations are usually hit or miss. Just look at movies like 'Tomb Raider,' 'Warcraft,' and the recent 'Until Dawn' — more often than not, they just don't land. On the flip side, 'The Last of Us,' 'Fallout,' 'The Witcher,' and even 'Halo' have actually done really well. What do they all have in common? They're TV shows. I've said for a while now that video game adaptations tend to fare better in a show format as there's simply more time to flesh out the world and dive deep into the characters. That's a big reason why blockbuster versions often fail. Which is exactly why I'm a little nervous about 'Bioshock' and 'Gears of War' getting the Netflix movie treatment. It's not that I don't believe in the talent behind these projects, because they're more than capable of telling great stories. It's just that the worlds in these games are so massive and detailed, I can see how tough it would be to translate them to live-action. The underwater city of Rapture and the fictional planet Sera are practically characters themselves. Their scale and intricate lore would be incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to fully capture in live-action without losing what makes them special. Honestly, maybe some games just aren't meant for that format. I'd be just as happy seeing them adapted as adult animated series instead. Since Netflix first confirmed a 'Bioshock' movie back in 2022, quite a few things have changed, and that includes the budget. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, producer Roy Lee said: 'The new regime has lowered the budgets. So we're doing a much smaller version. It's going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.' The limited budget does have me a bit concerned that it could limit the movie's ability to fully bring this world to life, possibly making it feel less immersive. Still, I'm holding onto some hope, especially knowing that Lawrence has drawn inspiration from 'The Shining' for this 'BioShock' adaptation. As I mentioned earlier, TV shows clearly tend to work better. And while Netflix is adapting 'Gears of War' into a movie, it's also developing an animated series which I'm much more optimistic about. There aren't any details yet, but I'm confident the show will do a lot better than the live-action take. All that said, I'm still genuinely excited for these movies, even if I'm a little hesitant because these games are some of my absolute favorites. Honestly, I'd rather wait a few more years if it means they get the focus and polish they deserve. Netflix, I just have one wish: Would you kindly do these video game adaptations justice?

For one, the long-benched 'Gears of War' movie has finally found its director, one who won't shy away from any action-packed goodness. Meanwhile, the first official image of the highly-anticipated 'Spider-Noir' series has been released, alongside some juicy news. All that and more in today's article. David Leitch Tapped To Direct 'Gears Of War' Movie After years of silence, a director for the proposed movie adaptation of 'Gears of War' has finally been named! After a lengthy behind-closed-door discussion, Netflix has finally secured David Leitch to direct one of Xbox's biggest game franchises. For those unaware, Leitch is known for his work in creating action-packed hits such as 'The Fall Guy,' 'John Wick,' and 'Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw'. Furthermore, it has also been confirmed that Jon Spaihts, known for working alongside Denis Villeneuve in bringing the recent 'Dune' movies to life, will be penning the script for the coming adaptation. It has also been confirmed by Netflix that the company and Spaihts will be working alongside The Coalition Studio, the Canadian game developer that brought the original franchise to life. It has also been reported that Leitch and his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick, will help produce this film through their joint production company, 87North Productions. The Coalition will also contribute to funding the film and help bring it to life. With all these details, one can't help but be intrigued by what Leitch and Netflix discussed behind closed doors, but unfortunately, it will stay under wraps as both parties refuse to comment on the deal. This is incredibly interesting, especially since Netflix has been trying to develop the movie since it got the rights to it back in 2022. However, the streaming giant refused to share any major updates about the production until Dave Bautista himself called out and pressured the company to release new information about the project earlier this year. We can only speculate if this long delay and eventual call-out resulted in this almost secretive discussion. What we do know is that the movie is in good hands, as both the director and writer have had an incredible track record with recent films, specifically for gritty sci-fi war movies filled with over-the-top stunts and action. How it will turn out, only time will tell. MGM+ & Prime Video Unveil Images Of 'Spider-Noir' It's been a hot minute since Nicolas Cage donned a supersuit, but it's nice to see him back in the saddle once again! As you may have known, ever since his showing in the beloved animated movie 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' as Spider-Man Noir, the veteran actor was given the rare opportunity to bring the titular character to life in its very own live-action film. With the hype surrounding the project, several behind-the-scenes and production images have already been leaked online, namely, shots of Cage in costume on top of set items, but never an official image. That is, until today. After months of waiting, MGM+ and Prime Video finally unveiled the first official shot of the highly-anticipated film at Amazon's annual upfront presentation last Monday. Though the image is in black and white to stick to the noir theming of the show, it has been confirmed that the series will be available in both black and white and colour to suit the audiences' tastes. Based on the Spider-Man Noir Marvel comic, the series is about 'an ageing and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero.' Though no official release date has been announced, it has been confirmed that the series is set to drop in 2026 and will be available to be streamed on MGM+ and on Prime Video. But it won't just be Cage who appears on the screen; Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Jack Huston will also be there. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the series will feature guest stars such as Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster. For those behind the camera, it has been confirmed that Harry Bradbeer will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Dan Shear will be on board as executive producers. The fact that the show has eight – count 'em – eight executive producers demonstrates that this is going to be a big series which is setting itself up to be one that we won't soon forget. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity's last stand. Netflix picked up the rights to the popular video game franchise in November 2022 with grand ambitions. The giant streamer hopes to first adapt the game as a feature, then follow that up with an adult animated series. More work would follow in success. Coming out of the stunt world, Leitch is slowly crafting a wide-ranging résumé even as he stays in the action lane. "Fall Guy", starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, was a love letter to the stunt and moviemaking community. The Brad Pitt-led "Bullet Train" was a contained, twisty assassin thriller, while "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" was a franchise play. Also on his list are comic book movie "Deadpool 2" and period spy thriller "Atomic Blonde".
