SpaceX confirms: Gigabay coming, and Starship launch from Florida by end of year
It's been known that Starship would eventually launch from Florida, but now SpaceX is saying it may happen as early as the end of this year — as SpaceX ambitiously confirmed they are pushing to launch from Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39A by the end of 2025. This news was publicly announced during the webcast of the March 3 Starship launch attempt from the Boca Chica, Texas, Starbase. Christopher Gebhardt from SpaceX communications spoke about the upcoming Starship plans during the Monday evening broadcast. 'We plan to complete the Starship launch pad at Pad 39A later this year, and pending the completion of the environmental reviews, SpaceX intends to conduct the first Starship launch from Florida Pad 39A later this year,' said Gebhardt. The project includes at least $1.8 billion of SpaceX capital investment and will bring an estimated 600 new full-time jobs in the Space Coast by 2030, the governor's office said. "With 600 new full-time jobs and the historic addition of Starship launches from Florida, this expansion strengthens our economy, grows our aerospace workforce, and solidifies our leadership in the next generation of space exploration," said U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos. "This investment is a testament to SpaceX's confidence in Florida's central role in spaceflight, and we are proud to support the groundbreaking missions that will lift off from our shores.' While SpaceX acknowledges the Space Force and Federal Aviation Administration environmental reviews are not set to be released until later this year, construction of the giant Gigabay at KSC, which will be used to stack and finalize the 232-foot-tall Super Heavy boosters (lower-stages) before flight, could begin as soon as next month. Also, the Starship tower standing on Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A will be finalized. The proposed SpaceX Gigabay will be an addition to SpaceX's current Robert's Road facilities on Kennedy Space Center. SpaceX has always said it plans to launch its massive rocket from Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A — and after development of a tower on the site, also from Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 37. SpaceX's Starship towers over 400-feet-tall — larger than any rocket ever in existence. It's 33 engines give off 16 million pounds of thrust upon liftoff. For reference, the Saturn V moon rocket was only 363 feet tall and gave off 7.6 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. Starship is not only planned to be SpaceX's next workhorse rocket, the upper-stage is also being tapped by NASA to act as a human lander for the Artemis III mission, aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface no earlier than 2027. Should the plan remain the same with the new administration, Starship will dock to the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit, taking astronauts down to the surface. SpaceX has also repeatedly stated hopes of launching an uncrewed Starship to Mars by late 2026, when the planet will be close to Earth. This has been stated to be a goal not only of CEO Elon Musk, but of the Trump administration, as during President Trump's inauguration speech he spoke of putting the stars and strips on Mars. Should an uncrewed Starship to Mars in 2026 happen, a crewed mission could follow in 2028. This timeline all depends on how soon Starship can be running smoothly, as while the previous flight saw a successful booster catch, the ship was lost less than 10 minutes into flight. It broke up over the Turks and Caicos Islands. It remains to be seen how Starship improves on the upcoming Flight 8, which was scrubbed Monday due to a booster issues. In this ambitious announcement, Gebhardt spoke of Florida's Gigabay after speaking about another Gigabay coming to Texas. "But Gigabay isn't just for Texas. If that weren't exciting enough, we're also further expanding Starship operations into Florida, bringing production and launch capabilities to the Space Coast as Starship flight testing, development, and launch cadence continues to pick up pace at Starbase in Texas," said Gebhardt. As for the Gigabay in Florida, construction could begin as soon as April. The 380-foot-tall structure would fall short of NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building, which stands at 525-feet-tall. But at that height, it would still make the Gigabay a recognizable feature looming in the distance on approach to Cape Canaveral. This would give the general public a glimpse of SpaceX's new generation launch system. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis welcomed SpaceX's announcement Monday night. 'Florida is the present and future of the space industry with leading space companies—like SpaceX—investing in the Free State of Florida. We welcome SpaceX's Starship to our state," said Governor Ron DeSantis, who has also lobbied for NASA to move its headquarters to the Space Coast. Like the SpaceX Megabay in Texas, the Gigabay would be used to stack and finalize the 232-foot-tall Super Heavy boosters (lower-stages) before flight. Once fully stacked on the launch pad, Starship stands more than 400-feet-tall. When is the next Florida rocket launch? Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, NASA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral So far, Starship has not reached an orbital flight from Texas, or successfully returned the ship (upper-stage) to the launch pad. As of January, SpaceX has caught the first-stage booster twice with the launch tower's "chopsticks". Full return and reusability is planned for future flights. The results of the upcoming Flight 8 remain to be seen in the coming days, and a return of the Starship to the launch pad could come as soon as Flight 9. SpaceX has not publicly announced when crewed flights are estimated to begin, or an exact date of when Starship will launch from the Space Coast. Brooke Edwards is a Space Reporter for Florida Today. Black holes suck public into ‘amazing discoveries' at Texas Science Festival
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Exploring black holes and diving into the power of memory are just a couple of highlights from the University of Texas at Austin's Texas Science Festival. The weeklong event hopes to bring the 'amazing discoveries' happening at UT to people across the state. 'It's so critical that we convey both the importance of the work to the general public, but also bring them in to the kind of awe and wonder that is that discovery,' said Dean of the College of Natural Sciences David Vanden Bout. The festival runs from Feb. 21 to March 1. Events are held across the state, from McDonald Observatory in west Texas to UT's campus along the coast. 'Scientists make amazing discoveries all the time and are invested in understanding our natural world, and sometimes we aren't great at bringing that news to the public,' Vanden Bout said. One of the events is an exploration of black holes hosted by UT's Department of Astronomy chair Karl Gebhardt. Laser lab stashed beneath the University of Texas could power future space travel Gebhardt will discuss what he calls 'the most important image ever taken in the history of astronomy.' That picture is the only photo ever taken of a black hole. 'It's kind of crazy how they took telescopes around the whole earth, and they came together to make this crazy image,' Gebhardt said. The image contains the outline of a black hole. No line is emitted from a black hole, so scientists had to take a photo of the light behind it, cutting the phenom into a silhouette. McDonald Observatory relocates to Austin — at 7% the size According to Gebhardt, black holes are so important because they contain 'the actual physics of where we live, of trying to integrate space and time, and it's the physical entity that which all of our models are based on.' His event, 'Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know,' is already sold out. However, there are many other events, both virtual and in-person that people can attend. A few highlights include: 'Mars Livestream' – Feb. 26 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. 'Memory Matters: Learning Throughout the Lifespan' – Feb. 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. 'No Shortcuts to the Top: Nutrition and Science on the World's Highest Mountains' – Feb. 27 from 7 to 8 p.m. 'The Science of Modern and Contemporary Public Art Preservation: A Walking Tour' – Feb. 28 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. 'Guardians of Our Water' – March 3 from 6 to 7:15 p.m. For Vanden Bout, the variety of events and options to attend are essential to the festival. 'It's a really great chance to bring people into the university and let them see what's going on, but also a chance for us to get out into the community and bring our science directly to people.' Notre Dame football offers 2026 Ohio safety a scholarship
The offers didn't stop flowing for Notre Dame football after a weekend of new ones, as they once again went to Ohio and have now given a scholarship to 2026 safety Kaden Gebhardt. The 6-foot, 2-inch and 200-pounder is considered as a very solid player, ranking as the No. 398 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Gebhardt fits the mold that the Irish look for in a defender of the back end of their defense. While he has already scheduled multiple official visits, Notre Dame has now entered the mix for one down the line. At the current moment, Gebhardt will see Penn State, Ohio State, and Clemson in the spring, with room for others to see as well. The hope is that the offer has peaked his interest in the Irish, as many players have sped up the process due almost all of them signing during the early period. For Notre Dame to have a legit chance with Gebhardt, they'll have to get him on campus for an official. Time will tell if that is the case, but it's clear the Irish want him in their 2026 class. After a great conversation with @Bullough40 I'm blessed to receive an offer from the University of Notre Dame!!! @Marcus_Freeman1 @DMAC_II @CoachMickens @ND_CalebDavis @CarterAuman @AllenTrieu @Kstaff07 @adamgorney @TomLoy247 @CoachSlater25 @thompsonfbcoach @SWiltfong_… — Kaden Gebhardt 4⭐️ S/ATH (@kaden_gebhardt) February 24, 2025 Three Notre Dame football commits make On3's 2026 updated top-300 list Quick end of February Notre Dame football recruiting recap Notre Dame extends offer to 2026 Illinois three-star tight end This article originally appeared on Fighting Irish Wire: kaden gebhardt notre dame football offer 2026 ohio safety

Hanahan Police Department launches new at-risk resident database
HANAHAN, S.C. (WCBD) – The Hanahan Police Department launched a new program Thursday, which provides officers information about at-risk residents. Hanahan At-Risk Residents Table (HART) provides a way for the police department to keep the community safe. As officials cite over 20% of children are affected by neurodiversity and seven million adults live with Alzheimer's or dementia in the United States. Those numbers boiled down to the city equals over 8,000 residents who may live with these effects. 'What implemented this was just recently we had an individual at a residence, who was elderly, suffering from some sort of medical condition that wandered away from his residence twice in a day. So, that was kind of the catalyst to push this out as fast as we could,' Rick Gebhardt, police chief of Hanahan, said. The entries are uploaded on a platform that only law enforcement can access. Friends and family can upload information and photos of their loved ones at any time. 'This is a way for citizens to enter information on loved ones from their name, their address, their date of birth, physical descriptors, locations they like to frequent, medications, and medical history,' Gebhardt said. 'So, we can better respond to them and provide them with assistance.' Though, the department has been looking to get a database like this off the ground for a couple months. In the case of a missing person, officers can now respond quickly and efficiently. 'We've been trying to get something like this implemented for a while – just with the 'Just Bee' training that we had a few months ago from the Just Bee Corporation. We just saw the need to have the database where families can enter this information that we can have access to at the tip of our fingers at any call, to help share the information in a more efficient manner,' Gebhardt said. Hanahan Police said you may contact them by phone or by email on the city's website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
