Google Introduces ‘Guided Learning' in Gemini AI to Promote Smarter Studying Over Shortcuts

In a move to reshape how students use artificial intelligence in education, Google has unveiled a new "Guided Learning" mode within its Gemini AI platform. Unlike traditional AI tools that simply provide answers, this feature is designed to serve as a learning companion, encouraging students to deeply understand the material they're studying. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Guided Learning aims to walk students through problems by offering 'questions and step-by-step support.' Pichai elaborated on the launch in a blog post, emphasizing that the tool is structured not just to deliver solutions but to foster comprehension. 3/ QuizzesTurn class materials into custom quizzes that can become flashcards and study guides with a tap. — Google Gemini App (@GeminiApp) August 6, 2025 The new mode blends AI assistance with educational psychology, integrating a variety of content formats to enhance the learning experience. Answers may come with supportive visuals, videos, and interactive quizzes, making the process more dynamic and less reliant on rote memorization. To develop the feature, Google collaborated with educators, students, learning researchers, and cognitive science experts. The result is a system Pichai describes as 'helpful for understanding new concepts and is backed by learning science.' This initiative comes at a time when AI companies are increasingly venturing into the education sector — not only to expand their services but also to combat growing concerns that AI tools are making it too easy for students to cheat. By focusing on learning rather than shortcuts, tools like Gemini's Guided Learning and ChatGPT's recently launched study mode are being positioned as legitimate educational aids. Despite these efforts, one lingering question remains: will students actually embrace these guided study features, or will they continue to seek out quick solutions? While the technology offers promise, its success may depend on how effectively it can motivate learners to engage with the content rather than simply extract answers. As part of the rollout, Google is offering a compelling incentive. Students aged 18 and above in select countries — including the United States, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, and Brazil — can sign up for a free 12-month subscription to its AI Pro Plan. This offer is available through October 6 and is expected to give students an opportunity to explore AI-driven learning without any initial cost barrier. In addition to the Guided Learning feature, Google is making a broader commitment to the future of education. The company has pledged a $1 billion investment over the next three years to support American education initiatives. These include programs focused on AI literacy, research funding, and expanded access to cloud computing tools in academic environments. With this dual-pronged approach — enhancing AI's educational role and increasing accessibility — Google is signaling a clear intent: it wants AI to be part of how students learn, not how they avoid learning. Whether the shift from answer-giving to understanding takes root will depend not only on the technology's capabilities but also on how educators and learners choose to engage with it.

Gemini on Android is getting ready to listen to your audio files (APK teardown)

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR In the latest beta of the Gemini Android app, we spotted an option to attach audio files, such as MP3s, to chats. A 'Talk live about this' prompt also appears, but the audio isn't accurately processed yet. While the feature might not be fully operational, we know that Gemini can comprehend audio. Ever wished you could just throw an MP3 at Gemini and have it explain what it's about? That might be coming soon, as we've spotted early signs of audio file support in the Gemini app for Android. ⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. In version of the Google app beta, we managed to activate a new file attachment feature when chatting with Gemini. You can now attach audio files like MP3s, and when you do, Gemini shows a new suggestion: 'Talk live about this.' That sounds promising, but it doesn't actually work yet. After uploading an audio file, you can either type a regular question or choose to 'talk live' about it. In both cases, Gemini doesn't seem to understand or respond to the file in any meaningful way. Sometimes it ignores the audio entirely. Other times, it confidently makes things up, as seen in the third screenshot below, but chatbot hallucinations aren't exclusive to audio files or Gemini. Still, it's not hard to see where this is going. On the developer side, Gemini already supports audio input through the API. You can feed it audio and ask it to describe what it hears, summarize it, or transcribe what's being said. It even handles timestamp requests like 'from 2:30 to 3:29,' and works with formats like MP3, WAV, and FLAC. That's likely what Google is building toward on the Android app — we're just not there yet. For now, it's more like a placeholder than a finished feature, and there's also no guarantee when or if it will launch. However, with image uploads now widely available in the Gemini app, audio support seems like a logical next step. Follow

Google rolls out Deep Think to AI Ultra subscribers.

Posted Aug 1, 2025 at 12:01 PM UTC Google rolls out Deep Think to AI Ultra subscribers. The advanced problem-solving model, first announced at I/O in May, is now available in the Gemini app for anyone signed up to Google's $250 per month plan. The version rolling out is a variant on the model that recently picked up Gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad. While that version took hours to solve complex math problems, the wide release is apparently much faster, but Google estimates it could still get Bronze. Google's Gemini app crosses 450 million monthly active users globally

Google's AI assistant app Gemini has surpassed 450 million monthly active users globally. The company claims that the significant portion of this growth can be attributed to India. Google reached this milestone after intensifying the push of localise AI tools for India users including support for 12 regional languages, integration with Android smartphones, and partnerships with Indian developers to build Gemini-powered apps. Analysts suggest that the strong performance of Gemini reflects a broader trend of AI moving from niche technological advancements to mainstream utility. Google's Gemini app surpasses 450M monthly active users amid AI push in India

Google's Gemini app now has more than 450 million monthly active users (MAU) with daily usage of the AI chatbot app growing by more than 50 per cent from the previous quarter. These figures were revealed by Shekar Khosla, the vice president of marketing and site lead at Google India, in a post on LinkedIn on Friday, July 25. 'The numbers say it all! @GeminiApp momentum is growing,' he said. The increase in the Gemini app's MAU count comes weeks after Google announced that Indian students aged 18 years and above are eligible for free access to its premium AI Pro subscription plan, which otherwise costs Rs 19,500 per year. The student offer is valid until September 15, 2025. As part of the subscription package, users get access to the latest AI models developed by the tech giant such as Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Research as well as its AI video generator, Veo 3. It also offers expanded access to AI tools such as Flow, Notebook LM, etc. Google, at its I/O Connect India 2025 event held earlier this month, announced a slew of new initiatives and AI capabilities to assist the Indian developer and startup ecosystems. The company announced collaborations with three startups, Soket AI, Sarvam, and Gnani, to facilitate the development of sovereign foundational AI models under the IndiaAI mission. With the Gemini app, Google is going head-to-head with OpenAI's ChatGPT app which is widely considered to be the dominant player in the AI chatbot landscape. The ChatGPT app is estimated to have around 600 million MAUs, according to court filings that were released in March this year. The Gemini app still has some ground left to cover, but it is quickly gaining traction. Ahead of its annual I/O developer conference in May 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai had revealed that the Gemini AI app has more than 400 million MAUs. While Gemini may be drawing away users from ChatGPT in the app space, OpenAI's popular AI chatbot poses a serious threat to Google's core search business. The Microsoft-backed startup recently said it receives 2.5 billion prompts from users around the world every day, with more than 300 million of those prompts coming from users in the US, according to a report by Axios. Meanwhile, Perplexity has also emerged as a strong contender as well. Recently, it overtook ChatGPT to become the top app on Apple App Store in India. This development took place just a few days after the AI search startup, led by IIT Madras graduate Aravind Srinivas, announced free Perplexity Pro subscriptions for a year to eligible customers of Indian telco Bharti Airtel.
