Investigation begins after recycling warehouse fire
An investigation is under way after a huge fire at a recycling warehouse continues to cause disruption. Roads remain closed around the Monoworld site in Rushden, where the fire took hold on Friday morning. Northamptonshire Fire Service is telling people to stay away from the area. Residents are being told to keep their doors and windows closed as a smoke flume is still visible over the town. More than 24 hours since the fire on Sanders Lodge Industrial Estate was reported, firefighters are still on the scene. Mick Berry, incident commander, said: "The roads are going to remain closed into the weekend and we'll have a presence on scene all over the weekend as well. "The messages that we said earlier about keeping doors and windows shut still remains. "Please do avoid the area." Mr Berry thanked local residents for their patience during the incident. The road closures still in force on Saturday morning were the A45 slip roads on to and off Northampton Road, Ditchford Road and Masefield Drive. Some parts of the Croyland business area were also closed off. The Wellingborough and Rushden MP, Gen Kitchen, visited the site on Friday and said: "This was a shocking sight to wake up to this morning. "I know local people are concerned about the impact of this fire so I was reassured by the presence of the Environment Agency at the site who have confirmed to me that they are monitoring potential pollution." At its height, 15 fire crews, including some from neighbouring counties, were tackling the blaze and a major incident was declared. There are no reports of any injuries. Smoke from the site could be seen from several surrounding counties, including Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Free breakfast club pilot launched at school
A school has welcomed a new government-funded breakfast club pilot, saying it could have a positive impact on pupils' learning and wellbeing. Oakway Academy in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire is one of 14 schools across the county trialling the government's new free breakfast club scheme, with around 100 children attending on its first day. The programme, which launched on Tuesday, offers families an extra 30 minutes of free childcare in the morning and is set to run until July, ahead of a possible national rollout. Zoe Walker, catering manager at Oakway Academy, said: "[The breakfast club is] crucial to develop the kids' social skills, they get used to sitting round a table interacting with each other, friendships are formed so it's a great way for them to start the day." The trial is part of a wider government initiative aimed at helping working parents and improving attendance and readiness to learn among primary school pupils. Ministers say the scheme will offer families up to 95 additional hours of childcare and save them around £450 a year. The Department for Education said breakfast clubs had "an important role to play in the government's commitment to remove the stain of child poverty". The breakfast club was officially opened at 08:30 GMT by the MP for Wellingborough and Rushden, Gen Kitchen, and cabinet minister Heidi Alexander. Under the scheme, schools will then be reimbursed by the government based on attendance at the clubs - a school with 50% participation in the pilot scheme could get £23,000 a year, the government said. James Hollingsworth, one of the heads of school at Oakway Academy, said: "We hope to support the children to have a calm, orderly start to the day. "We hope it provides them with a meal and supports our working families. We think it's a great start to the day and enables them to be ready to learn." Children are offered cereals, toast, and fresh fruit as part of the breakfast selection. Ms Walker added: "It's very important that children have a good start to the day – it helps them with their learning and their concentration and [the breakfast clubs] will make a huge difference."
