'It's not about me': David Genat announced as Jonathan La Paglia's replacement on Australian Survivor
The worst-kept secret in Aussie TV has now been confirmed: two-time survivor player and Perth local David Genat has officially been announced as Jonathan La Paglia's replacement as host of Australian Survivor. The news came after Genat, or 'The Golden God' as he's referred to on the show, was eliminated during last night's episode of the most recent series of Australian Survivor: Australia V The World, in which he was competing. Fellow competitors were quick to recognise the powerhouse player as a threat, dealing him a swift blow at Tribal Council. His appearance — though short-lived — marks the third time the Perth-raised star has appeared on the Australian version of the globally-popular show, after previously competing in Champions V Contenders in 2019, placing tenth, before returning the following year to claim victory on Australian Survivor: All Stars. Genat was quick to pull focus from himself when the announcement was made. 'I love Australian Survivor. It truly is the greatest game on earth so getting to come back as host after playing three times is such an honour,' he said in a statement. 'But Survivor is not about me; it's about the incredible players who put everything on the line to outwit, outplay, and outlast. 'I am pumped for the fans to meet the new crop of Survivors next season.' Filming is now underway in Samoa for the 12th season of the show, with Genat sliding into the vacant hosting shoes left by La Paglia, who headed up the series for nine consecutive seasons from 2016. La Paglia famously announced he had been axed as host in a now-infamous Instagram post, where he told followers Ten's decision to replace him had left him 'blind-sided.' Daniel Monaghan, SVP Content and Programming, Paramount Australia, said she was excited for fans to see Genet in action as host: 'As Australian Survivor moves into its 12th season, it's no secret there's been a change at the helm,' she said. 'As we step into this exciting new era, there was simply no better person to pass the baton to — David's track record, not just on Survivor but across reality TV worldwide, is unrivalled, and there's no one with more real-time experience and game knowledge to help steer this epic season.' As well as winning Australian Survivor in 2020, Genet recently took home a staggering $US5.8 million dollars — the most money ever given away on US Network television — after winning the US game-show hybrid series Deal or No Deal Island earlier this year.

‘I won't let you down': New host of Australian Survivor announced
Former contestant David Genat has been confirmed as the new host of Australian Survivor. Network 10 announced the news in a statement on Monday night. Widely rumoured for weeks, the confirmation comes after the controversial sacking of long-time host Jonathan LaPaglia, which confused and devastated many fans of the show. 'It's no secret there's been a change at the helm,' Paramount Australia's SVP Content and Programming Daniel Monaghan said after Genat was eliminated in the new season of Survivor: Australia v the World. 'As we step into this exciting new era, there was simply no better person to pass the baton to – David's track record, not just on Survivor but across reality TV worldwide, is unrivalled, and there's no one with more real-time experience and game knowledge to help steer this epic season.' Australia v The World – a special event season that has brought together the biggest players from around the world – was Genat's third time on the show, having previously competed on Champions v Contenders in 2019 and All Stars i n 2020 (a season he won). Earlier this year he also won one of the biggest prizes in reality TV history, taking home $9.2 million as the victor of US series Deal or No Deal Island. Genat, a former model known as the 'Golden God' for his charisma and self-confidence on screen, hosted the 2023 travel adventure series Rush. But, in his statement announcing the news, Genat deflected attention from himself. 'I love Australian Survivor. It truly is the greatest game on earth, so getting to come back as host after playing three times is such an honour,' he said. 'But Survivor is not about me; it's about the incredible players who put everything on the line to outwit, outplay, and outlast.' He has also made a shoutout to the show's dedicated following on social media saying, 'I love the players, I love the community of fans and I love the crew who make it happen. As the new host of Australian Survivor, I won't let you down.' Network 10 also announced the 2026 season of the show, which Genat is now filming in Samoa, will be themed Australian Survivor: Redemption, 'giving everyday contestants a chance to rewrite their story for a shot at greatness.'

Returning Survivor player Shonee Fairfax on the big secret one player was hiding
Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Some of Australian Survivor's most popular players do battle against big international names in the franchise when Survivor: Australia V The World debuts this weekend. And in a game where information is everything, there's some tension in episode one over the fact that local winner David Genat and international champ Pavarti Shallow have a connection that's undisclosed to the majority of their fellow players – they'd both recently competed together on another reality show, Deal or No Deal Island. The news that the two had already worked together on a different reality show was enough to send some players into a tailspin – but Genat was keeping an even bigger secret: He'd won the season, and with it an astonishingly large cash prize of USD $5.8 million (around $AU9 million). Don't miss a ding! Never miss the latest entertainment news from Australia and around the world — download the app direct to your phone. David Genat fronted up to Survivor: Australia v The World... ...after a season-winning stint on Deal Or No Deal Island. Picture: Supplied He won Australian Survivor: All Stars in 2020, earning $500,000 in prize money, after previously competing on Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders. Unbenownst to his fellow Australia V The World players, Genat was entering the game a newly-minted multi-millionaire - probably not the sort of news that would endear you to your tribemates and want them to give you a chance of winning yet again. Fellow Australian Survivor mainstay Shonee Bowtell, also competing this season, confirmed to that the players had no idea there was a newly-minted $9-million-dollar man in their midst. 'I have never even heard of the show, Deal Or No Deal Island?' she said. Fellow player Shonee says she had no idea David had just won millions on another show. Four-time player Shonee back in her first season. Picture: Channel 10. 'I knew from conversations that he had been on it, but I didn't know that he had won. He kept it all under wraps, so we didn't know. And to be honest I still don't even understand the concept of the show! But seriously, he's rolling in it... leave a couple of pennies for the rest of us.' Bowtell's appearance on this season cements her as the Australian player with the most days in the game, having already lasted 47 days in Champions vs Contenders, 42 in All Stars and 35 in Heroes vs Villians. Now a mum to a young son and with another baby on the way, Bowtell said the short, sharp nature of this season (just 16 days in total) helped persuade her to break away from life as a new mum and try her luck on Survivor for a fourth time. 'It was such a hard decision because I was only four months post-partum,' she said of getting the call to compete. The Aussie contingent on Survivor: Australia v The World. ...and the international players in the mix. 'So I was like, are you guys serious? But I think the thing that really enticed me was that it was a short season. I wouldn't have been able to do a full season at that time... but also to get the chance to play against these incredible [American] players like Pavarti, Cirie and Tony... I thought, I don't think that's going to happen again. It's now or never - just go for it.' Bowtell jokes that she's hanging out for a reality TV opportunity that involves 'food and accommodation,' and says she has a 'love-hate relationship' with Survivor. 'There's just something about it... when, as a regular person, do you ever get the opportunity to go and live on a beach and battle the elements? It literally rains non-stop in Samoa. And then you're doing these crazy challenges, putting yourself to the test, building relationships. 'It does seem like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... but here I am four seasons in! It's just too hard to say no.' Survivor: Australia V The World premieres 7:30pm Sunday August 17 on Ten.
