GPSSA Launches Medical Retirement Awareness Campaign in May

The General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) has launched a month-long awareness campaign in May to educate Emiratis on the rules and entitlements surrounding medical retirement, also known as unfitness to work. This initiative is part of GPSSA's ongoing "Topic of the Month" series aimed at clarifying key aspects of the federal pension system. The campaign responds to a rising number of public inquiries on social media regarding medical retirement. It focuses on eligibility criteria, qualifying medical conditions and injuries, and the procedures involved in applying for medical retirement through the GPSSA's Ma'ashi platform under the "Work Fitness Assessment" service. Medical retirement applies to individuals deemed unable to work due to serious health conditions or injuries sustained either at work or en route to their workplace. When certified by the competent medical committee, such cases are covered under Federal Law No. 7 of 1999 on Pension and Social Security and its amendments. Dr. Maysa Rashed Ghadeer, Head of the Government Communication Office at the GPSSA, emphasized the importance of public awareness in making informed career and retirement decisions. 'Understanding the rights and benefits of social security is essential to ensuring long-term financial and social stability for Emiratis,' she said. The initiative targets over 154,000 insured individuals, 21,000 pensioners, and nearly 20,000 employers under the federal pension system. The GPSSA aims to ensure that citizens are well-informed about their entitlements, particularly when faced with unforeseen medical challenges that could affect their ability to work. Medical retirement, when verified, enables eligible individuals to retire before the standard age with financial support, offering protection and dignity to those unable to continue their employment due to health-related issues. GPSSA's four-day training for GCC delegates concludes today

Abu Dhabi - The four-day training organized by the General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) for GCC delegates from across pension and social security authorities entitled 'Insurance Kit – Customer Happiness' concludes today. The training was held from 21 - 24 April at GPSSA's Abu Dhabi headquarters to enhance knowledge, experience and collaboration amongst delegates from across various pension and social security authorities in the GCC region. During the training, GPSSA's trainers and experts highlighted three main areas, namely: future skills, professional skills and global benchmarks that measure efficiency and talent management, during which the UAE's experience in talent management was emphasized, since the UAE earned the first regional position and the 17th internationally in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index, GTCI (2024 Talent Ranking issued by the International Institute for Management Development). This resulted in the UAE outperforming countries such as the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, France and South Korea. During an interactive presentation, the history of insurance and social security and the stages of development were emphasized in form of a cinematic documentary. The advantages and pivotal importance of insurance and social security in the lives of individuals were discussed, alongside supporting national strategies in GCC region which contribute to achieving stability in the lives of customers. This type of stability tops GCC leadership's agenda, which is why GCC citizens who do not work in their own-home-country but are employed in any of the GCC countries, are granted insurance and social security rights as if they were living in their own country. Another interactive travel-themed presentation covered the journey of excellence in customer happiness, showcasing the UAE's pioneering experience in providing government services that meet future expectations. The attendees were offered the opportunity to navigate knowledge-based stations that highlighted some the most prominent systems and global models in government services, some of which included Emirates Programme for Excellence in Government Services, the Global Star Rating System for Services, the Government Excellence Model and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). Additionally, the stages of transitioning to proactive services and adopting some of the top artificial intelligence technology for service design were discussed, alongside GPSSA's proactive development services that align with the objectives of the UAE governments 2021-2025 strategy, which aims to turn the UAE into the best country in the world in providing government services through an innovative and customer-based approach. The delegates praised the UAE's organizational capabilities and were presented with commemorative shields and certificates of participation. The workshop concluded with a group photo of all the attendees. For more information, please contact: Dina El Shammaa Media and Public Relations Senior Specialist E-mail: Website:

Emiratis Urged to Maintain Continuous Service to Secure Full Pension Benefits

The General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) has emphasized the importance of continuous and uninterrupted employment for Emiratis to ensure a smooth retirement and access to full pension entitlements. As part of its April 2025 awareness campaign, the GPSSA clarified that the minimum requirement to receive a retirement pension is 15 years of service and reaching the age of 60. However, voluntary resignation comes with stricter criteria—under Federal Law No. 7 of 1999, employees must have completed 20 years of service and be at least 50 years old. Under Federal Law No. 57 of 2023, the threshold increases to 30 years of service and age 55. To maintain pension eligibility, insured Emiratis are advised to merge previous and future employment periods, either through legal provisions or via the "Shourak" programme—available to those who joined the workforce from July 1, 2023. Failure to do so may reset their pension contributions, requiring them to start accumulating service years from scratch. The pension amount is calculated based on service duration. Under Law No. 7 of 1999, 70% of the pension salary is granted after 20 years, increasing by 2% annually up to a maximum of 100% after 35 years. Under Law No. 57 of 2023, the pension is calculated at 2.67% per year up to 30 years, and 4% per year beyond that, with retirees receiving triple pension salaries for every year worked beyond 35 years. GPSSA urges all insured Emiratis to stay informed, plan ahead, and ensure proper documentation to safeguard their retirement future. News Source: Emirates News Agency
