Need for gender responsive models to navigate workforce related migration

In an effort to support young women navigating the challenges of workforce-related migration, UNICEF YuWaah hosted a high-level roundtable today at the UNICEF Office in New Delhi. The discussion brought together key ecosystem partners to gather insights on migration support models that have been successful and co-develop scalable, gender-responsive models for migration support, aimed at enabling safer and more dignified transitions for young women entering urban migration being a critical pathway for employment in India, women - especially those at the early stages of their careers, remain significantly underrepresented among migrants due to concerns around safety, financial insecurity, social norms, and the lack of transitional support this gap, UNICEF YuWaah, under its Digital Girls Hub initiative, plans to pilot a Migration Support Program designed to address these barriers. The program will test models that offer bundled, short-term support services that encourage more young women and their parents to feel safe and comfortable migrating for jobs Setting the context, Giorgia Varisco, Chief of YuWaah said, "Young women are aspiring to engage in meaningful work. Yet, many of these opportunities are concentrated in urban areas. Migration, while potentially transformative, can also present many challenges, especially when undertaken without adequate support. Through the Digital Girls Hub initiative, UNICEF YuWaah will pilot a Migration Support Program, designed to strengthen existing efforts through collaboration and insights from our ecosystem partners."advertisement"Leaving the village and surviving in the urban workforce is very tough. We need to create enabling conditions for young women to join the workforce-through support at different stages of their journey, starting from the source state, with pre-migration support, to destination support. Employers must also ensure dignity and safety" said Arti Ahuja, Former Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of IndiaAt the discussion, L Sudhakara Reddy, Director (M&E), DDUGKY Resource Cell, National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) said, "The solution to migration and retention isn't with one player, it's a shared responsibility between training partners, employers, and the state. Everyone has a role to play."The speakers collectively looked at ways to develop gender-responsive models that are informed by real-world evidence. They also explored measures that foster a secure, organised, and systematic migration process, with a particular focus on resolving the unique challenges faced by women migrants as they seek employment UNICEF YuWaahAs part of the UN Youth Policy 2030, the UN Secretary-General launched UNICEF's global Generation Unlimited (GenU) movement at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018. This initiative addresses the urgent needs of young people aged 10-24 by expanding learning, skill development, employment, and engagement opportunities. The India chapter of Generation Unlimited, known as YuWaah, was launched in November 2019. By 2030, YuWaah at UNICEF aims to: advertisementCreate pathways for 100 million young people to access aspirational socio-economic opportunities. Enable 200 million young people to acquire relevant skills for productive lives and the future of work. Partner with 300 million young people as change-makers, providing spaces for them to develop their leadership skills.

‘Muharrik' platform to drive digital education

MUSCAT: The 'Muharrik' platform represents an entrepreneurial initiative that leverages augmented reality (AR) technologies for digital learning, offering innovative educational solutions based on interactive 3D models that have significantly improved students' academic performance. Ziyad bin Salim al Hinai said that the idea for the platform emerged during his studies in the United States, where he faced several academic and personal challenges. However, these challenges helped refine his entrepreneurial skills and avoid future mistakes. He noted that the platform originated from a personal desire to enhance digital learning tools and provide an engaging educational environment. He added that this challenge motivated him to seek innovative educational solutions, ultimately leading to the adoption of augmented reality technology. AR enables the transformation of abstract information into interactive 3D models, simplifying comprehension and stimulating learning. Al Hinai explained that AR technology allows complex concepts to be presented in a visual, three-dimensional format, accelerating understanding and retention. The platform has expanded its use of AR into other fields, such as museums, engineering and healthcare, collaborating with international companies to train medical personnel. He pointed out that the platform's trials have demonstrated a tangible impact on improving education. An experiment involving early-grade students using fourth-grade tailored content showed a 54-per cent improvement in academic achievement, confirming the technology's effectiveness in simplifying scientific concepts and making them more engaging. Al Hinai emphasised that the support provided by Oman Technology Fund was pivotal, not only financially but also through training workshops and knowledge mentoring, which enhanced the team's entrepreneurial capabilities and helped turn the idea into a viable and sustainable project. He added that 'Muharrik' is currently finalising a direct partnership with the Ministry of Education to promote the use of AR technology in schools. The platform also aims to expand into Arab and global markets by exporting digital educational content rather than importing it. Notably, the platform has received international awards and recognition from the Unicef and the Generation Unlimited initiative, marking a turning point in the company's trajectory and boosting the team's confidence to grow further. This recognition also helped attract its first investor, the Oman Technology Fund. - ONA

Capgemini: disconnect between Egyptian youth's climate concerns and green job readiness

FILE - Group of Thanaweya Amma students revising before the exam Cairo – May 22, 2025: A new global report by the Capgemini Research Institute and UNICEF's Generation Unlimited highlights a concerning gap between the optimism of Egyptian youth regarding climate action and their readiness to pursue green careers. While 71% of young Egyptians believe that developing green skills will open up new career opportunities and 63% remain hopeful that climate change can still be addressed, only 24% feel equipped with the necessary green skills to succeed in today's workforce. The findings also point to a significant disconnect between the climate concerns of Egyptian youth and their preparedness for green jobs. Despite 70% expressing worry about the future impact of climate change, and 37% showing interest in pursuing a green job, the lack of confidence in their skills highlights a critical gap in climate preparedness and employability. The report, titled Youth Perspectives on Climate: Preparing for a Sustainable Future, explores the views of 16–24-year-olds worldwide on climate anxiety, green career prospects, and the role of education, business, and government in empowering youth. Across the board, young people are eager to take part in climate action, but many lack the technical competencies required to enter green careers. Globally, six in ten youth see green skills as a gateway to better jobs, but just 44% believe they currently have those skills. The situation is even more challenging in certain regions of the Global South, where access to green education and training is more limited. The report also highlights a rural-urban divide, with youth in urban and suburban areas reporting higher concern and greater access to green opportunities than those in rural communities. Despite growing eco-anxiety — with 70% of youth worldwide fearing the effects of climate change on their futures — optimism remains. Most young people believe there is still time to solve the crisis, and over half are interested in aligning their careers with environmental values. Commenting on the report's findings, Sarika Naik, Group Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer at Capgemini, stated 'We need to help young people turn their passion into impact by investing in green skills. This report shows how critical it is that business, governments, and education leaders work together to bridge the skills gap, empower youth voices, and create pathways to meaningful green careers.' Dr. Kevin Frey, CEO of Generation Unlimited at UNICEF, added 'Green Rising, with its ecosystem of public and private sector partners, is supporting young people with the skills and opportunities they need to take climate action, start green companies, access green jobs and power green solutions.' The report calls for urgent action to integrate green education into national curricula, expand access to training, and align employment strategies with climate goals. It recommends stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors to co-develop green career pathways and to embed youth leadership into climate policy and corporate sustainability strategies.
