Atlanta family mourns ASU student allegedly murdered by boyfriend
The Brief Rogers "BB" McCloud, Jr., is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Gennia Grimes. Grimes and McCloud were dating and have an infant son together. Grimes' family says the suspect told them Grimes had committed suicide. Grimes was a junior attending Alabama State University to study criminal justice. According to her family, the couple had been together about two years but were about to break up before her death. ATLANTA - A man has been charged with murdering his girlfriend, a student at Alabama State University. What we know Rogers "BB" McCloud is charged with the capital murder of Gennia Grimes, who was also the mother of his child. He is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center in Alabama. Dig deeper Gennia Grimes grew up in the Ben Hill area of southwest Atlanta and graduated from Mays High School. She went on to study criminal justice at Alabama State University and was a member of the Honey Beez dance team. She met Rogers "BB" McCloud, Jr. at school and, according to Grimes' family, had been dating him for about two years. The couple had a son together. Amber A. Harris, a mentor of Grimes, said the suspect told the family Gennia had committed suicide. "Nobody believed him," said Harris. "We know the truth." What they're saying Angela Grimes says her daughter told her she was going to break up with McCloud. The mother believes she and her daughter were betrayed by the suspect. "My baby did not deserve that. This was somebody she loved," said Grimes. "When he came here [to visit], my family treated him like he was our family." A spokesperson from Alabama State University released the following statement: "Alabama State University mourns the loss of Gennia Grimes, a Junior Criminal Justice major. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness and spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones during this difficult time." What's next The family plans to hold Grimes' funeral at Antioch Baptist Church North this weekend. They created a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for it. Man arrested, charged with capital murder in death of Atlanta woman in Alabama
A man has been charged with capital murder in the death of an Atlanta woman who was killed in Alabama. On Thursday, March 27, deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Alabama were called to the scene of a shooting on Highway 80 East in the Waugh community. They found the victim, Gennia Grimes, 21, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was treated by medics and airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition. She later died from her injuries. Grimes was from Atlanta and was a student at Alabama State University. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility. However, please do not confuse our silence with inaction. We have been meticulously working to gather evidence and to determine the facts surrounding Gennia's death. MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Investigators filed capital murder charges on Friday against a man in the shooting death of a 21-year-old Alabama State University student from Atlanta. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrested 20-year-old Rogers McCloud, Jr. for the March 27 shooting death of 21-year-old Gennia Grimes. McCloud is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Facility. Medics treated the young woman at the scene and airlifted her to a hospital in critical condition. She died a short time later. What they're saying In announcing the arrest, the Sheriff's Office called the killing a case of domestic violence. Family members tell FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor McCloud was the father of Grimes' young son, Rogers McCloud III, who was born last year. She headed back to school after his birth to earn her degree from Alabama State. The backstory Grimes was a 2021 graduate of Mays High School in SW Atlanta. One of her dance videos went viral while at Mays and was featured on Access Hollywood. Her dancing stage names were "Strawberry" and "Purple doll". Grimes believed she would one day be famous, likely from her show-stopping dance moves. What we don't know The sheriff's office did not reveal a motive for the murder. Gennia's mother told FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor, "My daughter did not deserve to die. My daughter was a superstar and everyone who knew her knew that. She knew she was a superstar, so she was going to become famous. She knew that." The Grimes family has established a GoFundMe site to pay for her funeral. What's next We don't know when McCloud will make his first court appearance.
