After 69 years, Phari resto-bar shifts, looks for new address

Kolkata: Kwality restaurant, located at the intersection of Gariahat Road and Ballygunge Phari — which made the crossing better known as the 'Kwality Mor' over the last seven decades — has shut down. Established in 1956, the restaurant, famous for its North Indian and continental dishes and its breakfast, is set to move to a new location, which is not yet decided. The reason behind the move is a dispute with the landlord, who is redeveloping the property. One of the oldest and most popular resto-bars in south Kolkata, it was a favourite hangout joint for many in the neighbourhood and beyond. It shut down on May 5. Its Park Street branch, which started in 1952, is even older and remains operational. "We are looking for a new location since the property will be developed and there is a dispute with the owners. So far, four or five locations have been identified, though we are yet to zero in on any. Ballygunge Kwality has been popular among a wide range of patrons who were our loyal customers for several decades and over generations. Even our family has been emotionally attached to it and remains so. We are definitely going to reopen it once a suitable location is available," said Tanvi Ghai from Kwality. She added that until the restaurant shut down last month, there were many who visited it every day. "A significant number of our patrons were daily visitors for years. We respect their love for the restaurant and hope to be back for them," added Ghai. The Park Street branch of the restaurant was originally a tearoom that later started serving North Indian and tandoori food. The Ballygunge branch has been a beloved neighbourhood spot for generations. For thousands across south Kolkata, Ballygunge Kwality was synonymous with succulent chicken mayonnaise, grilled fish, fried prawns, and chicken tetrazzini. Those who preferred North Indian dishes swore by Kwality's rogan josh, mutton do pyaza, chicken tandoori, prawn butter masala, and chicken shahi biryani. The same fare is still being served at the Park Street branch. There were several loyal groups who visited the restaurant regularly for breakfast and gorged on stuffed omelette, chicken omelette, French fries, and toasted cheese omelette. "While the Ballygunge branch employees have been absorbed at Park Street outlet, we hope to return soon. But we can't set any time frame, as it is not clear how soon we would be able to select a site. We are not yet ruling out the possibility of returning to the Ballygunge location, which remains a preference, but we are looking at all options," said Ghai.

Inside the iconic London cinema that is ‘haunted' by spooky actors

Casper, Moaning Mytrle, Slimer and Sam Wheat might be some of the most famous ghosts ever to appear on a big screen, but would you ever expect to see one of them sitting next to you at the cinema? Well, if you go along to one of the oldest independent cinemas in London you might end up with a spooky plus one. The Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square has long been rumoured to have scary goings on since it opened in 1962, but now fresh building work seems to have stirred up ghouls of the past. Staff have always feared that the building, which has now been listed as an asset of community value (ACV) in a bid to help save it, had otherworldly goings on. It has been fighting for the last year to stop it from closing after its current lease is due to expire in September, and the building's owner wants to raise the rent. But in the last six months, it isn't protestors or campaigners that have been having their say. Ben Freedman, the cinema's managing director, told Metro that there have been two unexplained floods, lights, and the water supply randomly turning off and on, as well as mysterious leaks. To finally put it all to rest, the cinema called in a professional ghostbuster (after all, who you gonna call) to get to the bottom of what has been happening. Ben called in Barri Ghai – who hosts the TV show 'Help! My House Is Haunted' to undertake an overnight investigation. Ghai told Metro 'It is highly plausible the cinema is teeming with spiritual activity' and took the newspaper to show him exactly what he might find. The ghoul expert thinks London is one of the most haunted cities in the world, and the Prince Charles might not even be the most haunted venue in the capital. Just around the corner is the Drury Lane theatre, which is widely considered one of the most haunted in the world. Among its otherworldly denizens are thought to be the spirits of the Regency-era comedian Joseph Grimaldi and a fearsome figure known as the Man in Grey, who patrols the upper circle in a riding cloak and tricorne hat before dematerialising into the wall. But it isn't just the cinemas and theatres that are haunted in London too, with some of the capital's most haunted pubs just around the corner from the Prince Charles. And while Metro didn't catch a glimpse of the Man in Grey, Casper or even so much as a tiny bit of slime on one of the sofa's the night helped to get to the bottom of whether there are ghosts there or not. The presenter used state-of-the-art technology, which revealed several floating energies on screen illuminated by a series of moving white lines and dots. Audio scanning devices also picked up the sounds of a childlike voice when the expert introduced himself in a seemingly empty maintenance storage room. Ghai told Metro: 'Due in part to its rich and diverse history, London is one of the most haunted cities in the world. 1. Theatre Royal Haymarket, London 2. Oldham Coliseum 3. Theatre Royal, York 4. Adelphi Theatre, London 5. Theatre Royal, Margate 6. Lyceum Theatre, Crewe 7. Theatre Royal, Bristol Source: Sky History 'There are many locations across the capital that may look unassuming and are seemingly benign, but they house dark, gruesome, and sometimes rather terrifying pasts.' More Trending He added: 'I am also a bit of a magnet for spirits and find that my higher connections allow me to gather amazing evidence time and time again.' 'Our investigation has confirmed that there are active spirits in the cinema building.' Has it helped solve the age-old question of whether ghosts are real? Maybe it is step in the right direction, and Mr Freedman thinks there can't be any other explanation. He said: 'None of these costly and damaging mishaps makes any sense…and if not ghosts, then who?' Operation Sindoor: Ceasefire with Pakistan doesn't have 'expiry date', says Indian Army

Refuting Pakistan's claim that the ceasefire with India was being extended periodically, the Indian Army said that there was no 'expiry date' for the ceasefire reached on May 10. read more The medium-range Akash air defence system is in service with the Indian Army and Air Force. Image courtesy BEL The India-Pakistan ceasefire reached on May 10 does not have an 'expiry date', according to the Indian Army. 'As far as continuation of the break in hostilities is concerned, as decided in the interaction between the DGMOs of May 12, there is no expiry date to it,' said the Army, as per The Times of India. The clarification came after Pakistan said last week that the ceasefire had been extended till Thursday. Ghai's remarks implied that there was no point of any periodic extension as the ceasefire had no deadline in the first place. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After four days of intense combat in which India struck nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and at least eight airbases in addition to air defence and radar sites, India agreed to Pakistan's request for a ceasefire on May 10. Subsequently, the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of the two countries held talks on May 12. India has maintained that Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the Pahalgam attack, has not been ended but just paused. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that Pakistan had been put 'on probation' for now. 'If Pakistan's behaviour improves, it is fine. But if there is any disturbance, harshest punishment will be given,' said Singh.
