After 69 years, Phari resto-bar shifts, looks for new address

Kolkata: Kwality restaurant, located at the intersection of Gariahat Road and Ballygunge Phari — which made the crossing better known as the 'Kwality Mor' over the last seven decades — has shut down.
Established in 1956, the restaurant, famous for its North Indian and continental dishes and its breakfast, is set to move to a new location, which is not yet decided. The reason behind the move is a dispute with the landlord, who is redeveloping the property.
One of the oldest and most popular resto-bars in south Kolkata, it was a favourite hangout joint for many in the neighbourhood and beyond. It shut down on May 5. Its Park Street branch, which started in 1952, is even older and remains operational.
"We are looking for a new location since the property will be developed and there is a dispute with the owners. So far, four or five locations have been identified, though we are yet to zero in on any.
Ballygunge Kwality has been popular among a wide range of patrons who were our loyal customers for several decades and over generations. Even our family has been emotionally attached to it and remains so. We are definitely going to reopen it once a suitable location is available," said Tanvi Ghai from Kwality.
She added that until the restaurant shut down last month, there were many who visited it every day. "A significant number of our patrons were daily visitors for years. We respect their love for the restaurant and hope to be back for them," added Ghai.
The Park Street branch of the restaurant was originally a tearoom that later started serving North Indian and tandoori food. The Ballygunge branch has been a beloved neighbourhood spot for generations.
For thousands across south Kolkata, Ballygunge Kwality was synonymous with succulent chicken mayonnaise, grilled fish, fried prawns, and chicken tetrazzini. Those who preferred North Indian dishes swore by Kwality's rogan josh, mutton do pyaza, chicken tandoori, prawn butter masala, and chicken shahi biryani.
The same fare is still being served at the Park Street branch. There were several loyal groups who visited the restaurant regularly for breakfast and gorged on stuffed omelette, chicken omelette, French fries, and toasted cheese omelette.
"While the Ballygunge branch employees have been absorbed at Park Street outlet, we hope to return soon. But we can't set any time frame, as it is not clear how soon we would be able to select a site. We are not yet ruling out the possibility of returning to the Ballygunge location, which remains a preference, but we are looking at all options," said Ghai.

Bengaluru man claims brother, 19, exploited at Zepto Cafe, faces 13-day pay loss

A Bengaluru man called out the alleged mistreatment of his 19-year-old brother at a Zepto Cafe a detailed post on Reddit that has since gone viral, the man accused the Zepto Cafe in Marathahalli-3 of exploiting his younger brother, a warehouse employee. He claimed the teenager, who had been working long shifts to make ends meet, faced harassment from colleagues and bias from seniors, and is now being threatened with a 13-day salary cut after refusing to comply with an unscheduled demand for 'My brother (19 years old) works at the Zepto warehouse in Marathahalli-3, Bangalore, specifically inside the Zepto Cafe,' the man said. 'My brother is far from home, working hard to survive,' the user wrote. On June 3, the teen reportedly completed a 5pm to 2am shift. After the match-day celebration of RCB's IPL win, he received a sudden message from the cafe manager, who asked him to report back at 8am the next morning, just hours after his previous shift ended.'Suddenly, he got a message from the cafe manager telling him to report again at 8 AM the next day (June 4th) that's just a few hours later. He refused, and here's why: He was already scheduled for the evening shift, not the morning. He would've barely had 4-5 hours of sleep. No point unless you just pressure to show up. And after working hard, celebrating a rare RCB win is not a crime,' he added. advertisementHe declined the demand and pointed out that he was already scheduled for the evening shift on June 4. The fallout was swift. According to the post, the cafe lead told him not to come in at all and allegedly threatened to withhold 13 days' worth of wages.'And what happened next? He got a call from the cafe lead saying 'Don't come at all anymore!' - and they're now threatening to withhold 13 days of salary,' the man post went deeper into the work environment as the man claimed his teen brother reportedly faced frequent harassment from a local co-worker, who allegedly monitored and falsely accused him.'On top of that, the work culture inside Zepto Cafe is extremely toxic: A local employee keeps harassing and falsely accusing him. If my brother uses his phone for even a minute, the guy runs to complain. If he speaks to other north Indian coworkers in Hindi, he gets accused of 'talking nonsense' or 'insulting the lead' — for simply talking in his own language,' the brother claimed in his post. The user added that other workers were allegedly made to create PowerPoint presentations unnecessarily, and resting during downtime drew shouts from the lead. 'It's discrimination, plain and simple,' he man said he has not filed a formal complaint yet, but is now actively exploring escalation routes. 'We haven't taken any formal steps yet, no complaints filed, no escalation, but we're seriously considering it. We'd really appreciate: Advice on what to do next, If anyone has experience with Zepto's HR or escalation paths and if there's anyone local in Bangalore who's dealt with similar issues, your support would mean the world to us,' the user said. Take a look at his post here: Zepto has not yet issued a response to the viral post. This copy will be updated soon as they react to the viral post. Trending Reel

Daryaganj Hospitality aims to more than triple restaurant count to 50 by FY30

North Indian restaurant chain Daryaganj Hospitality Pvt. Ltd, which is locked in a legal battle with rival Moti Mahal over who invented the popular butter chicken dish, plans to expand from 15 outlets currently to 50 in three to five years, co-founder and chief executive officer Amit Bagga said. Also Read | Sake sips and elevated Japanese at this new restaurant in Mumbai The company has earmarked ₹60 crore for the expansion, which will be funded through a mix of internal accruals and private investments from family offices. 'We're profitable since the pandemic and could fund our growth internally as well, and will focus on the top eight cities in India to grow for now," Bagga told Mint. In FY25, the company registered a gross revenue of ₹100 crore. 'We expect to grow to ₹120 crore by the end of FY26 on the back of both same-store growth as well as some new outlets being added," he said. Also Read | Aloo tuk bravas and butter chicken romesco at Vicky Ratnani's new restaurant "Cuisine wise, the country's biggest eating-out cuisine is north Indian food and we wanted to primarily build restaurants which target families and wanted to go after the middle-of-the-range price point of ₹800-900 per person, which is a sweet spot where we did not see much competition," Bagga said. So far, the company is bootstrapped and self-funded. "We are now looking at funding from family offices," he said. The company's founder and promoter is Raghav Jaggi and all restaurants are owned and operated by the company and not franchised. By the end of the FY26, the company intends to increase its restaurant count to 20, including a few delivery kitchens, and has a strong presence in north Indian markets like Delhi-NCR. Next, it will target the top eight cites of the country to grow, including Mumbai and Bengaluru. Also Read | Profit squeeze drives Indian restaurants to seek new delivery paths The growth push comes even as Daryaganj remains locked in a legal battle with Moti Mahal over who owns the rights to inventing popular dishes like butter chicken and dal makhani. Owners of Daryaganj have contended that their ancestor, Kundan Lal Jaggi, was key to the founding of the original Moti Mahal in Peshawar in 1947 and also in the creation of the butter chicken recipe. Moti Mahal counters that by saying that its late founder, Kundan Lal Gujral, invented the dish and brought it to India from Peshawar post-Partition, and has filed a case against Daryaganj, alleging trademark infringement, passing off, and using a manipulated photograph of the original Peshawar restaurant. Daryaganj has emphasized that the photograph used by Moti Mahal is a joint property, as the restaurant was established by both Kundan Lal Gujral and Kundan Lal Jaggi. Daryaganj registered the "Inventors of Butter Chicken & Dal Makhani" tagline as a trademark in 2023 without any objections. The matter is currently before the Delhi high court. Moti Mahal in Daryaganj, Delhi, was founded by Kundan Lal Gujral, Thakur Das Magu and Kundan Lal Jaggi. In 1992, all three partners of the Moti Mahal business exited and sold the business to a fourth person Vinod Chadha. Since the early 1990s, Chadha has overseen this restaurant. The overall food services market is projected to grow from ₹5.69 trillion in 2024 to ₹7.76 trillion by 2028, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 8.1%, according to a July 2024 report by the National Restaurant Association of India. In FY24, casual dining, the segment Daryaganj operates in, held the largest share in the organized food segment, accounting for 48.6%. Today, about 25% of the company's business comes from deliveries. "We pivoted to deliveries during covid, but have still seen a consistent demand in business in this segment. Delivery has eaten into the home cooking segment, but not the dining-out segment, so we don't feel there is any cannibalization," said Bagga. Earlier this year, the company also expanded to its first international location, in Bangkok, Thailand with a higher end, more modern restaurant version of Daryaganj Gold, with some modern fusion dishes. It also plans to enter other markets like the UK and the UAE. In future, it intends to add other divisions like fast casual dining in elevated or premium food courts as well as in the artisanal Indian sweets. It would also consider taking its Bangkok Gold concept to other five-star hotel locations in India as well.
