After 69 years, Phari resto-bar shifts, looks for new address
Established in 1956, the restaurant, famous for its North Indian and continental dishes and its breakfast, is set to move to a new location, which is not yet decided. The reason behind the move is a dispute with the landlord, who is redeveloping the property.
One of the oldest and most popular resto-bars in south Kolkata, it was a favourite hangout joint for many in the neighbourhood and beyond. It shut down on May 5. Its Park Street branch, which started in 1952, is even older and remains operational.
"We are looking for a new location since the property will be developed and there is a dispute with the owners. So far, four or five locations have been identified, though we are yet to zero in on any.
Ballygunge Kwality has been popular among a wide range of patrons who were our loyal customers for several decades and over generations. Even our family has been emotionally attached to it and remains so. We are definitely going to reopen it once a suitable location is available," said Tanvi Ghai from Kwality.
She added that until the restaurant shut down last month, there were many who visited it every day. "A significant number of our patrons were daily visitors for years. We respect their love for the restaurant and hope to be back for them," added Ghai.
The Park Street branch of the restaurant was originally a tearoom that later started serving North Indian and tandoori food. The Ballygunge branch has been a beloved neighbourhood spot for generations.
For thousands across south Kolkata, Ballygunge Kwality was synonymous with succulent chicken mayonnaise, grilled fish, fried prawns, and chicken tetrazzini. Those who preferred North Indian dishes swore by Kwality's rogan josh, mutton do pyaza, chicken tandoori, prawn butter masala, and chicken shahi biryani.
The same fare is still being served at the Park Street branch. There were several loyal groups who visited the restaurant regularly for breakfast and gorged on stuffed omelette, chicken omelette, French fries, and toasted cheese omelette.
"While the Ballygunge branch employees have been absorbed at Park Street outlet, we hope to return soon. But we can't set any time frame, as it is not clear how soon we would be able to select a site. We are not yet ruling out the possibility of returning to the Ballygunge location, which remains a preference, but we are looking at all options," said Ghai.

Kozhikode beach to get modern food street
Visitors to Kozhikode beach will soon be able to enjoy a variety of cuisines in a cleaner, more organised setting as the Kozhikode Corporation gears up to open a modern food street within a month. The project, implemented jointly by the Food Safety department, National Health Mission, and the Kozhikode Corporation, will introduce specially designed pushcarts, or 'banks,' arranged in a uniform style along a 240-metre stretch of the beach. Work is currently in progress, with the first two model carts already placed at the site. The food street is expected to be ready by September 15. According to Corporation officials, around 90 food carts will operate from the stretch, each set up on raised platforms with seating areas provided for visitors. 'The aim is to ensure people can enjoy their food while listening to the sea and feeling the breeze, in clean and aesthetic surroundings,' said P. C. Rajan, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Works. He added that only vendors included in the Corporation's approved list would be permitted, while all unauthorised vendors currently operating on the beach would be evacuated. Declaring the area as a vending zone, officials said the new initiative would replace the stalls that currently dot the beach. 'This will not only provide hygienic and safe food but also bring order and beauty to the beach premises,' Mr. Rajan noted. Water and other facilities would also be provided for vendors, he added. P. Divakaran, Chairman of the Welfare Committee, said the food street would feature dishes from across the country, with both North Indian and South Indian cuisines on offer. The project also includes special lighting and other amenities to enhance the ambience, he said. The food street, with 89 authorised vendors expected to begin operations by the end of the month, is part of the Corporation's broader effort to regulate street vending within its limits while ensuring food hygeine and public health.

Meet Ravi Ghai, The Hotelier-Ice Cream Baron At The Centre Of Arjun Tendulkar-Saaniya Chandhok Engagement
Ravi Ghai has long been a known name in India's luxury hospitality and food industry, but right now it's not a new hotel opening or a business deal that's got people talking. His granddaughter, Saaniya Chandok, has just got engaged to Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. The private engagement, held on August 13, 2025, has brought two high-profile Mumbai families together - one known for cricketing glory, the other for five-star hospitality and ice cream empires. Who Is Ravi Ghai? As chairman of the Graviss Group, Ghai's portfolio reads like a list of hospitality heavyweights. He owns the InterContinental Hotel on Mumbai's Marine Drive, a landmark property he transformed from the old Natraj Hotel into a beacon of luxury. His reach goes well beyond hotels - he has steered brands like Kwality and Brooklyn Creamery and brought Baskin-Robbins to India and the SAARC region back in 1993, making global flavours a familiar treat here. Global Training, Local Impact A graduate of Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, Ghai has blended international know-how with Indian business instincts for decades. In 1967, he returned to Mumbai and took over the business legacy. Under his leadership, Graviss Food Solutions Private Limited reported revenues of Rs 624 crore for FY23-24, marking a 20% year-on-year jump. The group's net worth is estimated between Rs 800-1,000 crore, with business interests that straddle both luxury hospitality and mass-market food. Creating New Brands Ghai's journey has been shaped by both continuity and reinvention. He carried forward his father's legacy with Kwality Ice Cream, expanded the reach of the Gaylord restaurant chain, and launched The Brooklyn Creamery to capture a younger, health-conscious market. He has also maintained a strong global outlook, building collaborations that introduced high-end service standards and international brands to Indian consumers. However, all the headlines aren't all sweet. Around a month ago, Ghai faced personal turbulence, most publicly in a dispute with his son Gaurav, whom he accused of taking control of the Graviss Group during his cancer treatment. He accused him of forging his signature, committing fraud, and taking control of the company while ending his monthly allowances during his cancer treatment. The matter, treated as a family dispute by police, has gone to arbitration. An Ever Lasting Legacy In Hospitality Despite these challenges, Ghai's influence on India's hospitality sector is hard to overstate. Since joining the family business in the 1960s, he has been a pioneer in luxury service, a dealmaker for international tie-ups, and a custodian of heritage brands. Whether it's a hotel suite overlooking the Arabian Sea or a tub of ice cream in a corner shop, his work has touched multiple layers of Indian life. Now, with his granddaughter's engagement to Arjun Tendulkar, Ravi Ghai finds himself at the intersection of business news, society pages, and cricket chatter.
