HYDERABAD: Dr BR Ambedkar Open University on Sunday announced that free degree courses will be offered to all transgender individuals in Telangana under its equal opportunity plan. From the 2025–26 academic year, any transgender person with a 10+2 (Intermediate or equivalent) qualification can enrol in any degree course offered by the university. Only a nominal registration fee of Rs 500 will be charged, with all tuition fees waived. Vice-Chancellor Prof Ghanta Chakrapani said transgender students will also receive free course material and study tools, with no additional fees whether they attend classes in person or through other media. Admissions will be open at any study centre across Telangana. The initiative aims to ensure equal opportunities for all sections of society. The university already provides free education to prisoners serving sentences and to military personnel. From this academic year, it is also extending free higher education to children from backward tribal communities, including Gond, Koya, and Chenchu.

Ambedkar Open University has announced that free degree courses will be provided to all transgender people in Telangana, said Vice Chancellor Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani on Sunday. He described the initiative as a progressive step forward in inclusive education, stating that BRAOU would be the first university to provide such an opportunity for transgenders. Under this innovative scheme, beginning in the academic year 2025-26, any transgender person with a 10+2 (Intermediate or equivalent) qualification can enrol in any degree course offered by the university. A nominal registration fee of Rs 500 would be the only charge, as the university has decided to waive all tuition fees. In addition to the tuition fee waiver, transgender students will be provided with free course materials, and no fees will be charged for attending classes or continuing their studies through other media. He also stated that study tools would be available to them free of cost. He said that they can gain admission to any study centre across Telangana and attend classes there. Prof. Chakrapani reminded the audience that the university is moving forward with the aim of providing equal opportunities to all sections of society. He highlighted that the university is already fulfilling its social responsibility by providing free education to prisoners and military personnel. He also revealed that a programme has already been announced to provide free higher education to children from backward tribal communities in the state, such as Gond, Koya, and Chenchu, starting from this academic year.

Ambedkar Open University, making education inclusive for all, Vice Chancellor Ghanta Chakrapani on Sunday said that the university will offer free degree courses to all transgender individuals in the State. It is a first that a university is providing such opportunity to transgender persons, he stated. Under the scheme, starting this academic year, any transgender person with a 10+2 or equivalent of Intermediate education can join a degree course. A registration fee of ₹500 is compulsory. However, all tuition fees are waived. Additionally, the university will also provide course material and tools to access the various materials and platforms, free of cost. Admissions can be had at any study centre of the university in the State where enrolled students can also physically attend the classes. 'We are moving with the aim of providing equal opportunity to study for all sections, and this university is already fulfilling its social responsibility by providing free education to prisoners, military personnel engaged in service at various stations,' Mr. Chakrapani stated. Hyderabad: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Dr B. R Ambedkar Open University Vice Chancellor Prof Ghanta Chakrapani has revealed that free higher education will be provided to tribal children from this academic year. He said that through his university, lakhs of people away from education in the last four decades have been brought closer to higher education opportunities. The university has inquired about communities not represented, and who is there among the lakhs of people who have pursued higher education. A complete analysis of the statistics reveals that some communities and tribes are still far from education. The university has identified that tribal tribes are particularly backwards in higher education and has decided to provide higher education to them too. Dr BR Ambedkar Open University, Bahujana School. Up to 90 per cent of the students are SC, ST, BC and minority. Half of them are women. However, some of them are not seen enough. Observing that the tribal tribes of Telangana are not getting enough access to higher education, the university came up with a special plan for them. Education at your doorstep is the motto of the university. In line with this, the university noticed that even though study centres were set up in remote areas, they could not reach the tribals. It wanted to provide the necessary resources for their education. The university charges the lowest fee in the country for degree courses, which is only Rs. 3200 per year. However, even though it is a burden for the tribals. Against this backdrop, the 'Tribal Free Education Plan' is based on the idea that it should provide them with education without any fee. The aim of this program is to stand by the forest children of Gond, Koya, Chenchu and other tribes in the state, to provide free education near their residential areas with a nominal admission fee of just Rs. 500, without any teaching fee, and to provide free textbooks. Along with admission, the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, explained that the aim is to graduate at least one thousand tribal children in the next five years by providing them with books and other audio-visual resources. Hyderabad: In a move to enhance skill development through education-linked employment, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), in association with the Retailers Association Skill Council of India (RASCI), organised a Job Mela on campus to promote its Stipend-Based Apprenticeship Program (SAP). The event organised on Thursday attracted students from across Telangana and highlighted new pathways for earning while learning. Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, Vice Chancellor of BRAOU, addressed the gathering as the chief guest, emphasising the university's mission to empower students with scholarship-based education. He highlighted that students enrolled in the SAP have the opportunity to earn stipends ranging from Rs 7,000 to Rs 24,000 per month while continuing their academic journey. 'Our goal is to ensure that every student not only receives an education but also becomes employable or entrepreneurial,' Prof. Chakrapani said. He announced future collaborations with reputed organisations to host additional job fairs and skill-oriented initiatives. He also reaffirmed the university's dedication to preparing students for managerial roles through a practice-intensive, stipend-linked degree framework. The Vice Chancellor commended the Telangana government's initiative to boost women's entrepreneurship in both urban and rural partnership with WE-Hub is a strategic step in that direction, aiming to foster innovation and leadership among women. He also announced the rollout of short-term vocational courses for tribal and rural learners via Swami Ramananda Tirtha Rural Institute. Joining virtually from Mumbai, Sameer Narsapur, Head of Standards & Quality Assurance at RASCI, emphasised the importance of integrating education with professional experience. Chanda Vadde, General Manager of Industry and Academia (RASCI South), spoke about RASCI's Four-I's model—Individual, Institution, Industry, and India—which forms the foundation of the curriculum design. 'The SAP program offers more than a certificate—it creates financially independent and professionally competent individuals,' she added, assuring students of enhanced employment prospects upon completion.
