Ghirardelli is bringing its viral Dubai chocolate sundae to NYC for one day only
Clear your calendars and brace your sweet tooth: the obsession with Dubai chocolate in NYC continues strong. This Saturday, April 26, at noon, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience Store inside the Empire State Building will serve up its Dubai Chocolate Sundae, an ultra-luxe riff on the viral 'Dubai chocolate' bar that's been making waves (and wrecking diets) across TikTok and in real life. Keep in mind that the dessert will only be served until supplies last. Inspired by Fix Dessert Chocolatier's famous Can't Get Knafeh of It bar in Dubai—dreamed up by Sarah Hamouda as a pregnancy craving for the Middle Eastern dessert knafeh—the sundae takes things up a notch. Ghirardelli's version layers vanilla ice cream with pistachio butter, white chocolate, shredded phyllo (aka kataifi) and the brand's signature handmade hot fudge. The treat is finished off with whipped cream, caramel drizzle and a literal gold-leafed Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Caramel square. In short: this is not your average scoop. Hamouda started testing recipes in her Dubai living room with no prior chocolate-making experience, combining nostalgic flavors like pistachio cream and crunchy pastry. Her husband, Yezen Alani, joined her in launching FIX Dessert Chocolatier, which began by selling one bar a week. That is, until a viral ASMR-style TikTok, showing off the chocolate's gooey interior, sent demand skyrocketing and their delivery app crashing. The Ghirardelli sundae, which caused a frenzy at the brand's San Francisco flagship earlier this year, is the latest evolution of that global obsession, and we know if there's one thing New Yorkers love, it's a good dessert drop. Ask anyone who's waited hours for a Dominique Ansel Cronut, a Levain cookie or Magnolia Bakery's banana pudding back in the day. While the Dubai Chocolate Sundae has all the makings of the next sweet status symbol, this is a first-come, first-scooped situation, and supplies are limited: so show up early, bring a friend and maybe wear stretchy pants? Six places where you can find Dubai Chocolate in NYC right now
By now, you've likely seen bars of milk chocolate sprouting with pistachio-colored phyllo popping up on your feed. It's the Dubai Chocolate Bar, and it's a trend that seems to have some staying power. It all started when Dubai's Fix Dessert Chocolatier launched their chocolate bar, 'Can't Get Knafeh of It Chocolate Bar.' It went insanely viral after TikToker Maria Veherea's ASMR video, which as of this writing has 125 million views. Spawning imitators and even scammers, the pistachio and knafeh-filled bar, now coined the 'Dubai Chocolate Bar,' has taken on a life of its own with interpretations found all around the world, including right here on the East Coast. Jersey City's The Shortbread Society®️ was one of the first to bring the trend to the city, launching their interpretation of the trend, Dubai Pistachio Chocolate Bar Shortbread, on Goldbelly in April of last year. Using Ghirardelli chocolate shortbread as a base, the dessert comes with a layer of crispy kataifi, pistachio-white chocolate cream and dark chocolate topped with crushed pistachios. However, the 20-year-old, family-owned business, The Nuts Factory, also lays claim to being one of the first, selling a classic version of the chocolate bar in August of 2024. The premium nut and chocolate store has gone on to sell it every which way, from chocolate-dipped dates filled with phyllo and rolled in nuts, cups of strawberries drizzled with pistachio cream and your choice of milk, white or dark chocolate and the Dubai Cheesecake Bomb with a filling of cheesecake right in the center. For a more classic take on the original, the Swiss chocolate store Läderach (with three locations in NYC including the Theater District, midtown and midtown east) sells a thinner version of the chocolate bar in comparison to most, with a layer of roasted pistachios and kataifi filo encased in a Swiss milk chocolate. Sweet Graffiti, the midtown bakery known for its artistic takes on dessert like pad thai cookies, sells a spray-painted chocolate bar, The Dubai (priced at $26), with pistachio, tahini, white chocolate and kataifi. They even sell a mini version with a more bite-sized price of $9. But carrying on with its eclectic nature, the bakery also released the Dubai Ice Cream Sundae made with homemade vanilla soft swerve drizzled with chocolate syrup, homemade pistachio cream, toasted kataifi and pistachios. Speaking of ice cream, Shake Shack is even getting in on the fun, selling a Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Shake with a crackable chocolate shell for a limited time. Meanwhile, Ghirardelli is dropping its Dubai Chocolate Sundae for one day only. On Saturday, April 26, the Empire State Building location will be scooping up its layered sundae (pistachio butter, white chocolate, kataifi, vanilla ice cream, Ghirardelli's signature handmade hot fudge, whipped cream, caramel sauce and a gold-leafed square of Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Caramel) from noon until sell out.

President Donald Trump announced on social media this week that grocery prices are 'going down.' But that doesn't seem to be the case in my neck of the woods (nearly $11 for a bag of Ghirardelli semisweet chocolate chips? Seriously?). CNN did a fact-check and it turns out Trump's claim was incorrect. According to the Consumer Price Index, average grocery prices were about 2.41% higher last month than they were in March 2024. That was the highest year-over-year grocery inflation rate since August 2023. Here's what else you need to know to Get Up to Speed and On with Your Day. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is still being detained in a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador without due process — even though the US government conceded his deportation was a mistake and despite the rulings of several courts. Sen. Chris Van Hollen managed to meet with Abrego Garcia on Thursday and posted several pictures on social media of their encounter. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele responded on X and declared that Abrego Garcia will remain incarcerated in El Salvador. Abrego Garcia's wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, celebrated when she heard about the senator's meeting with her husband. 'My children and my prayers have been answered. The efforts of my family and community in fighting for justice are being heard, because I now know that my husband is alive,' she said in a statement. Van Hollen plans to release more details about their meeting today. At least two people were killed and another five wounded in a mass shooting on the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee on Thursday. Police have one suspect in custody, a 20-year-old FSU student who's also the son of a local sheriff's deputy. Authorities say he had his mother's service weapon when they took him into custody. The suspect also has been hospitalized 'with serious but non-life-threatening injuries,' police said. As the university went into lockdown, students and staff who've done shooting drills for years knew what to do: they hid in classrooms behind locked doors. One class stacked desks against the door in an attempt to barricade themselves from the gunman. Some fled to a church located across the street from the university, where the priest provided shelter and comfort. Others screamed and ran away from the area, frantically dodging bullets. It was the sixth mass shooting in Florida this year. The Trump administration is gutting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — despite a court order not to do so. The independent agency, created after the 2008 financial meltdown, protects Americans from financial abuses and has regulatory authority over many types of products and services, including bank accounts, consumer debt collection, credit cards, credit reporting and loan servicing. But on Thursday, the Trump administration laid off about 1,500 out of 1,700 employees, the National Treasury Employees Union said. Last week, a federal appeals court told the administration that it can shrink the agency but not dismantle it, nor can it trim the CFPB so much that the staff can't carry out its statutory functions. Federal employee unions and other organizations have asked a judge to hold an emergency hearing on the layoffs, claiming the administration violated the previous court order by 'cutting the Bureau's staff by 90 percent in just 24 hours.' President Trump didn't hold back his feelings about Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Thursday, even though he was the one who originally appointed him. In a social media post, Trump lashed out at Powell's decision not to cut interest rates and said his 'termination cannot come fast enough!' Later, while speaking with reporters, Trump reiterated his disdain for the Fed chair. 'I don't think he's doing the job. He's too late. Always too late. A little slow and I'm not happy with him. I let him know it,' Trump said. 'And if I want him out, he'll be out of there real fast, believe me.' Although the president has been unhappy with Powell for years, his most recent comments came after the Fed chair spoke at an event in Chicago and said the administration's sweeping tariffs were larger than expected and that the lingering uncertainty could inflict lasting economic damage.
