Omniscient Reader Director on Adapting Web Novel Without Fan Pressure

SINGAPORE – South Korean film-maker Kim Byung-woo, director of South Korean fantasy Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, was not going to let a passionate fan base paralyse him creatively. His first concern was making a good movie rather than worry about whether followers of the source material – the popular web novel Omniscient Reader (2018 to 2020), with more than 200 million views globally – would cry foul if it failed to be a faithful adaptation. 'If I think about too many elements of the web novel, then the film wouldn't be good or meaningful. My first priority was to make this a very entertaining film for the audience,' says Kim, who also co-wrote the screenplay. He was speaking through an interpreter to The Straits Times at a press event at Marina Bay Sands on July 29. He and lead actors Ahn Hyo-seop and Lee Min-ho were in town to promote the film, which is showing in cinemas. Positive fan reactions can push a live-action movie derived from a webtoon, web novel, anime or manga to box-office success, as with South Korean fantasy film Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) and its 2018 sequel. They were adapted from a 2010 webtoon. The opposite happens when fans rall y to pour online scorn. That fate met Hollywood's 2017 take on the seminal manga Ghost In The Shell (1989 to 1991), with celebrated anime versions already existing. It also happened to Netflix's live-action adaptations Death Note (2017) and Cowboy Bebop (2021), both sourced from anime and manga. While the quality of the films was judged to be poor by most viewers, the fervent online campaign waged by fans of the source materials helped put a nail in the coffin of the idea of sequels. 'I know that there could be some concerns from fans of the original web novel when adapting a story into a screenplay, but just because we have the screen adaptation of the novel, it doesn't mean that it's going to undermine or change anything about the original work,' he adds. In keeping with the web novel's idea of a multiverse, he says t he novel and the movie can co-exist without one being considered superior to, or a replacement for, the other. 'T he audiences will be able to enjoy this fil m m ore if they see it as another version of the original web novel, as an extension of the universe created by th e a uthor,' he says. In Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, Kim Dok-ja (Ah n) is an office worker who becomes the only reader of a fading web novel, Three Ways To Survive The Apocalypse. He is disappointed by the novel's conclusion but is chastised by the author, who tells him to write his own ending. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO Suddenly, he and everyone else on Earth are swept into an alternate reality in which the cataclysmic events of the novel happen, where Dok-ja meets the novel's hero Yu Jung-hyeok ( Lee ). A rmed with the knowledge of the future, Dok-ja must win a series of trials – including fighting deadly creatures – to escape this new reality. This is director Kim's first attempt at a web novel adaptation, having made action thriller The Terror Live (2013) and military thriller Take Point (2018). The element that drew him to his latest project was that the novel engaged readers by frequently placing them at strategic and moral crossroads – should they copy their favourite book's story for a surefire win or pick a riskier unknown option that can save more people? 'As a reader, it got me to think about what I would do in Dok-ja's position. The novel wasn't a simple story about a dystopian end of the world. It felt very interactiv e, ' he says. My Daughter Is A Zombie (Aug 28) Jo Jung-suk plays a dad whose daughter is infected by a zombie virus in My Daughter Is A Zombie. PHOTO: GOLDEN VILLAGE Based on a South Korean webtoon, this live-action drama tells the story of a devoted dad (Jo Jung-suk) who lives in a nation recovering from the devastation caused by a zombie virus. But he hides a dark secret: His daughter (Choi Yoo-ri) is infected. With society on guard against another outbreak, he must shield her from discovery. Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (Sept 25) Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is set in a world where human fears come to life in the form of devils. PHOTO: SONY PICTURES In contrast with the other works of animation on the list, this Japanese movie is for adults only – it is gory and filled with dark, cynical humour. Based on an ongoing manga launched in 201 8, Chainsaw Man is set in a world where human fears come to life in the form of devils. Lead character Denji is a teenage orphan who hunts and kills evil creatures after he transforms into the human chainsaw chimera of the title. The Legend Of Hei 2 (August/September) The Legend Of Hei 2, an animated feature from China adapted from an online series, opens in Singapore in August or September. PHOTO: ENCORE FILMS Chinese artist MTJJ launched the story as an online flash animation in 2011. It gained cult status in China and, on the back of its success, a prequel film, The Legend Of Hei, was released in 2019. It went on to earn over $65 million worldwide, a strong number for a Chinese animation. The fantasy is set in a present-day China where spirits in human or animal forms exist. Humans and spirits live in an uneasy balance with one another. The protagonist Xiaohei is a black cat spirit in human form who has the power to summon matter-absorbing portals. In Hei 2, the once-idealistic and naive Xiaohei has matured and learns to lead other spirit warriors.

‘Ghost In The Shell' Anime Teaser Reveals New Logo By Hajime Sorayama
The new logo design by Hajime Sorayama. The upcoming anime adaptation from Science Saru of the classic manga series Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow reveals a new logo by Hajime Sorayama. Hajime Sorayama is a fascinating artistic figure, known for his somewhat racy robot designs. He also did the album cover of Just Push Play by Aerosmith. So, having him design the logo for a new Ghost in the Shell anime (shown above) is definitely an interesting choice. The new teaser trailer (shown below) also continues to emphasize that this anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell will be visually very faithful to the original manga. Honestly, I am entirely behind this. We've had multiple anime adaptations of Ghost in the Shell over the years, and most of them have deviated from the source material quite a bit. The other interesting piece of news is that renowned author EnJoe Tou will pen the script for this anime. He has a long and involved bibliography, but in recent years, he's worked on anime as well, with Godzilla Singular Point being notable. Either way, I was onboard the moment Science Saru was announced to be doing the anime's production. In my opinion, after Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Science Saru can do no wrong, and the inclusion of all these additional creative figures in this new Ghost in the Shell anime fills my heart with a rare sense of hope that this will pan out decently. Masamune Shirow Exhibition In Tokyo Is As Extensive As It Is Great
The Masamune Shirow Exhibition at the Setagaya Literary Museum is definitely worth going to. The somewhat enigmatic manga creator Masamune Shirow finally has an exhibition in Tokyo commemorating his work, and it is utterly fascinating. For many, Shirow is one of the definitive modern manga creators and is also hugely influential. From his work on Appleseed to Ghost in the Shell, his work has helped to define contemporary science fiction and cyberpunk for decades. Naturally, his manga has also been adapted into anime over the years, in some cases multiple times. The latter is likely where many know his name from, especially when it comes to Ghost in the Shell. However, this exhibition covers a lot more than that. Not only does it cover Shirow's influences, but also the actual tools he uses to make manga. You also get walkthroughs of his actual manga work for each series, from Dominion to Black Magic, Orion, and many more. Shirow even has panels throughout the exhibition giving his thoughts on various subjects, such as the origins of the Fuchikomas from Ghost in the Shell, and that they were inspired by the quadrupedal tank from the Akira manga by Katsuhiro Otomo. You also have a timeline of Shirow's thoughts on technological progress, which is an interesting idea, seeing how much of his manga tried to predict the future. In any case, for any fan of Shirow and his long-running career in manga, this exhibition is a must-see. Held at the Setagaya Literary Museum, tickets cost 1,500 yen (or around $10 at the current exchange rate). The exhibition also has an artbook, featuring many of the pieces on display, and that too comes highly recommended and costs 4,180 yen (or around $29 at the current exchange rate). Science Saru's 'Ghost in the Shell' Anime Series Boots Up New Logo & First Character Looks
The 1995 sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell has enjoyed a storied legacy, which means the occasional long wait for new content. In 2026, Science Saru will revisit the familiar tale with a fresh anime project, described as 'the first instalment of a second generation' and the 10th adaptation overall of the original manga. Following an earlier reveal of the trailer and key visual, an updated teaser was unveiled at Anime Expo 2025, featuring the storyboard visuals and concept art of various characters, including protagonist Major Makoto Kusanagi. The previously revealed poster was also shown, this time with a new logo design: The series marks the first anime instalment for the franchise since 2020's Ghost in the Shell: SAC_204 , with a producer on the project stating during the panel that it will stay true to the original manga by Shirow Masamune (via Anime News Network). The creator has given his blessing to The Ghost in the Shell , announcing on social media, 'Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first instalment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.' Mokochan, assistant director of Dandadan , is making his directorial debut on the series, while acclaimed sci-fi novelist Toh EnJoe ( Space Dandy , Godzilla Singular Point ) serves as a scriptwriter and series composer. Science Saru is joined by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. on the production committee. The official synopsis for the anime reads: 'Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including 'ghost hackers' who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interface and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers' criminal ends.' Of the various adaptations over the years, Mamoru Oshii's original animated feature remains the most popular and acclaimed. The manga was published in 1989, introducing fans to Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organisation led by Major Mokoto Kusanagi. It spawned four more manga entries, five animated movies, a live-action film adaptation featuring Scarlett Johansson, and four anime series over the years. The World of Masamune Shirow -The Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation- exhibition opened in Tokyo on 12 April, and is set to end on 17 August. The Ghost in the Shell boots up in 2026.
