These new horror movies prove the slasher genre isn't dead
'Fear Street' trilogy Divided into three parts ( 1994 , 1978 , 1666 ), the trilogy, based on R.L. Stine's popular Fear Street book series, traces the origins of the Shadyside curse back to the execution of Sarah Fier. Accused of witchcraft, her vengeful spirit possesses others to kill on her behalf. Part of the trilogy's appeal is its reverence for slasher and horror movies that came before, evoking nostalgia in fans of the genre. Part 1: 1994 borrows elements from the Scream franchise. Part 2: 1978 , set in summer camp, pays homage to the Friday the 13th movies. And Part 3: 1666 incorporates elements of folk horror. 'Scream' (2022) Jenna Ortega steps into her scream queen era in this clever, Gen Z-driven revival of Wes Craven's legendary slasher series. Set 25 years after the original Woodsboro killings, a new Ghostface begins targeting a group of teens. The attacks draw legacy survivors Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) back into familiar—and deadly—territory as they help a new generation of victims survive the carnage. See also: How Jenna Ortega nails gothic fashion with a nod to 'Beetlejuice', 'Wednesday' and more 'Scream VI' After surviving the latest round of Woodsboro horrors, sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) try to rebuild their lives in New York City. But a change of scenery doesn't mean they've escaped the nightmare as Ghostface emerges to stalk them anew. In a direct callback to the original Scream sequel, familial revenge serves as the motive behind the killings in this update. Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) returns with Scream 4 alum Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere)—now an FBI agent—to assist in the investigation. 'Fear Street: Prom Queen' R.L. Stine continues to terrorise a new generation with the latest addition to the Fear Street universe. Set once again in the cursed town of Shadyside, Prom Queen follows Lori Granger (India Fowler), an outsider at her high school who soon finds herself fighting for her life when the prom court starts turning up dead, one by one, at the hands of a masked assailant. With its blood-soaked blend of teen drama and mystery, Prom Queen nods to horror classics like Stephen King's Carrie —minus the pig's blood and psychic meltdown—and the 1980s cult classic Prom Night . Don't miss: In 'Nosferatu', true horror lies within the human 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' Already hailed as the best entry since the original, the opening set piece alone is guaranteed to fuel the anxiety of a new generation of viewers. The latest instalment in this horror movie franchise takes generational trauma to the next level, introducing a clever twist: life—and death—are inherited legacies. But as much as that adds a fresh new layer to the mythology, it's the deaths that steal the spotlight, each one unfolding like a morbid Rube Goldberg machine. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' (2025) Instead of a reboot, fans are getting a direct sequel when I Know What You Did Last Summer hits cinemas on July 18. While the film introduces a new cast of characters—led by Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders and Jonah Hauer-King—it's expected to revisit the original movie's core premise and tropes: a group of teenagers bound by a dark secret are picked off one by one by a hook-wielding killer. Legacy characters Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr) return to confront the past and help uncover who's behind the new wave of murders.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Wants in on The SCREAM 7 Action - 'I'm Waiting on a Call' — GeekTyrant
By now, Scream fans should know to expect the unexpected, characters return from the dead, the rules are rewritten, and Ghostface is never quite who you think. But if Sarah Michelle Gellar had her way, she'd be the next familiar face back in the fold. While walking the red carpet for the new film Pretty Hurts , the Buffy the Vampire Slayer icon revealed that she actually tried to get back into the Scream game, but her phone never rang. Gellar told ET with a laugh: "No, I'm not in Scream, I tried to get in Scream, but nobody wanted me." Gellar played ill-fated sorority sister Cici Cooper in Scream 2 , a character who didn't make it past the second act. But given the franchise's recent trend of bringing characters back from the dead for Scream 7, she figured maybe her time could come again. "They're bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call. I didn't get a call. There's a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard, I'm just saying, I'm waiting for my call.' With Ulrich, Lillard, Scott Foley, and even David Arquette coming back, the door seems wide open for some Cici Cooper resurrection, but, Cici probably wasn't a big enough character in the franchise, and I imagine she wouldn't fit in with the story that director Kevin Williamson is looking to tell.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Got Hilariously Real About Wanting to Return For Scream 7: ‘I'm Waiting On A Call'
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's a great time to be a fan of horror, with a slew of upcoming scary movies, including some major '90s franchises, returning to the big screen soon. Two of those big hitters are I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream. And both properties shared one of the biggest It Girls of the time, Sarah Michelle Gellar. However, she was killed off in both series. Now, after it was confirmed she won't be in IKWYDLS after a failed pitch to return, she's humorously holding out hope of joining ranks with other deceased Scream alums. As the world continues to ponder what Scream 7 will be about after the years of turbulence surrounding the coming installment, Gellar is waiting for her call to head back into Ghostface's world. While at the premiere of the 2025 movie schedule's Pretty Hurts, the 48-year-old revealed her wish after mishearing a question about another stellar '90s show that's getting a revival, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She shared with ET that she tried to revive her college-aged sorority girl from the Scream sequel, but to no avail: No, I'm not in Scream, I tried to get in Scream, but nobody wanted me. While I know the Cruel Intentions actress had a relatively minor role in 1997's Scream 2, it would've been real fun to see SMG reprise her character in at least one of the franchise's following blockbusters. However, when it comes to Scream 7, as far as she knows, Cici will not be back. Over the last few years, we've seen one of the best horror franchises pivot into new territory after dropping Melissa Barrera and the exits of Jenna Ortega and the now former director Christopher Landon. With the new ground, it brought back legacy stars like Neve Campbell and many more, which signaled to the Scooby-Doo actress to shoot her shot. She shared that she kept waiting on the phone to ring, but it never came: They're bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call. I didn't get a call. Again, it's been a whirlwind to hear about production and what will be waiting for the fans as they make their way to the theaters for this upcoming Scream flick. The familiar faces paired with bold claims about 7's Ghostface make it seem like the 2026 film will be a major chapter of the franchise. Yet, as the seventh title continued to mysteriously move ahead, it left many of us confused, including the Ready or Not 2 actress. She wryly marveled that some of the top-tier killed-off characters were picked up to fill out the cast, while she wasn't. Gellar finished her comment by publicly stating she's still open to jumping back into the Woodsboro world: There's a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard, I'm just saying, I'm waiting for my call. It's true, many past stars have been tapped to rejoin Sydney Prescott's world, including Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. With Scream challenging all the norms of the genre, wouldn't there be a small space to add the passed Cici Cooper? This is just one small pitch from an SMG and Wes Craven fan; there's still time after all. Regardless, the question remains: how exactly will the fallen be included in Scream 7 since they all seemingly died? Who knows, but we know Gellar isn't on that call sheet (though at least a few of us are holding on hope after her announcement). Until someone on production picks up the phone and calls her, we can relieve her small arc by watching the Scream movies again.

FOREVER FRIEND: Ghostface 'thrives' on daily play and stimulation
Ghostface, a one-year-old male, short-haired cat, values attention and independence when it comes to getting situated in a new home. Turns out the kitty, who was dropped off at the Toronto Humane Society in November 2024 after being found wandering around Leslieville, 'likes being the own king of his castle.' 'He is affectionate mostly and he's smart,' said THS spokesman Lucas Solowey. 'But he is a little mischievious. He has a big heart. He's playful. He's full of charm,' added Solowey. 'But basically he does value his independence in addition to affection and like many spirited cats, he prefers attention on his terms and can get overstimulated if petted too much, especially in sensitive areas (like his paws and tail).' That means he requires a home with no children or other pets, for now, and hopefully, one with owners who have had cat experience and can offer a structured routine. 'I've seen him in different modes where he loves playing,' said Solowey. 'He can just get overstimulated and has some work to do in terms of training but I would say he's really fun. He can sit next to you. He likes being pet to a certain extent. He's highly food motivated. He is actually quite intelligent.' Solowey also noted that whoever adopts Ghostface — named for his white coat — will get some help. 'Our team is here to support his transition into this next chapter with a new family,' he said. 'He is eligible for free, post-adoption consultation and behaviour training for six to eight weeks.' Anyone interested in adopting Ghostface can visit to start the adoption process. — UPDATE: Llama, a one-year-old male Holland lop rabbit, from February's Forever Friend column, was adopted.

Ghostbusted: bungling burglar in Thailand with ‘Scream' mask arrested
A would-be burglar in Thailand thought he was in with a ghost of a chance to rob a gold shop in a mall in Chiang Mai. Advertisement It was the perfect plan, or so he thought: hide inside the mall until closing time and sneak out from the shop in the Mueang district with his loot. He even disguised himself with a 'Ghostface' mask from the Scream film franchise and wore a black cloak in a bid to evade capture. There was one glitch: once he got into the shop at night, he could not get out. The next morning on Tuesday, employees of the shop discovered the break-in and locked up the bungling burglar before calling the police. The 21-year-old suspect, Aesara, whose surname was withheld, admitted to police officers at the scene about his attempt to rob the shop, according to a report by The Nation online newspaper. Thai police say a man in Chiang Mai dressed as 'Ghostface' has used a crowbar to open and rob a gold shop in Chiang Mai. Photo: Handout 'Aesara had arrived at the mall, parking his motorcycle at a nearby petrol station. By 5pm, he slipped into the mall, hiding until closing,' said Yanapol Phatthanachai, Mae Ping police superintendent, according to a report by Thaiger newspaper.
