Rite Aid customers want to know next steps as Giant Eagle takes over some prescriptions

Rite Aid customers want to know next steps as Giant Eagle takes over some prescriptions Rite Aid customers want to know next steps as Giant Eagle takes over some prescriptions Rite Aid customers want to know next steps as Giant Eagle takes over some prescriptions As Rite Aid locations shut down across Southwestern Pennsylvania, many customers are trying to figure out their next steps to get their prescriptions. Some customers won't have to do anything. That is, if they're okay with their prescriptions and their information being transferred to Giant Eagle. For 78 of the locations closing in Pennsylvania and Ohio, it will be transferred to Giant Eagle. Mary Castillenti is a little frustrated that the Rite Aid in O'Hara Township is set to close, and before it does, she made sure to get there early Friday morning, to be first in line to transfer her prescriptions to another pharmacy. "It's like one more thing," Castillenti said. "I just want to make sure it goes to where I want it to go." After the drugstore chain filed for bankruptcy again, it announced transactions to sell its prescriptions to stores like CVS and Walgreens. Now, Giant Eagle said it reached a deal to do the same. The process will happen in waves in June, with the 78 locations closing. The first 30 will take effect by the end of next week. Giant Eagle will also take over the physical pharmacies at two of the Rite Aid locations, yet to be announced. It's unclear what retailers will take over prescriptions from the other closing locations in the region. Jannah Drexler, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle, said that on the effective date set for a Rite Aid location to transfer its information, it will automatically be sent to the closest Giant Eagle. "Their prescription information that they house in those stores, due to regulatory reasons, has to have another designated home," Drexler said. If you want to go to a different Giant Eagle location, you can. If you don't want to use Giant Eagle, you can transfer it to another retailer, either before the effective transfer date through your Rite Aid location, or after, through Giant Eagle. "We're really trying to make this as smooth a transition as possible for them," Drexler said. Drexler said the company is reaching out to affected Rite Aid customers to let them know about the change and is actively trying to expand its pharmacy team to meet the new demand, including with some of the Rite Aid employees. They'll also be extending hours at many locations. KDKA reached out to Rite Aid for comment, but didn't hear back by airtime. First Rite Aid locations to send prescriptions to Giant Eagle

Giant Eagle will take prescriptions from 78 Rite Aid locations. Here's where the first transfers are.

Giant Eagle says it's taking customer prescriptions from nearly 80 Rite Aid locations, which are closing after the drugstore chain filed for bankruptcy again. Giant Eagle says it reached an agreement with Rite Aid to transfer pharmacy prescriptions for 78 locations across Pennsylvania and Ohio. The company says it expects to close on the purchase of the prescriptions in "waves" during June, with the first 30 transfers taking effect by the end of next week. Giant Eagle will reach out to affected Rite Aid customers to let them know about the change. More details will be available closer to the transaction closing dates in the coming week, the company said. "We're excited to welcome new patients to our Giant Eagle Pharmacy," Giant Eagle president and CEO Bill Artman said in a news release. "We pride ourselves on running a nationally recognized pharmacy and drugstore business where our licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are committed to delivering trusted, personalized care. When paired with the value and convenience of our drugstore and supermarket offerings, we're proud to provide a comprehensive, one-stop shopping experience." In the meantime, Giant Eagle says it's "actively" trying to expand its pharmacy team to meet the demand of new patients. Here are the first Giant Eagle locations to take prescriptions Giant Eagle says right now, it can share the specific information of 30 Rite Aid locations. The agreement between the two companies is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, Giant Eagle says. These are the first 30 pharmacies that will be taking Rite Aid prescriptions. Walmart purchases Bethel Park Shopping Center for $39.6 million

Walmart has purchased the Bethel Park Shopping Center, where it already operates a store, for $39.6 million. Real estate records for Allegheny County show that an affiliate of Walmart called Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust purchased the nearly 22 acre lot earlier this month. The plaza is currently occupied by Walmart and by Giant Eagle along with a Pep Boys store, a Firestone Complete Auto Care store, a Chinese restaurant, a Great Clips store, and a Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard location. The purchase of the Bethel Park plaza comes months after Walmart, the world's largest retailer, also purchased the Monroeville Mall property for around $35 million. Walmart has purchased the Bethel Park Shopping Center located along Library Road for $39.6 million. The plaza currently is occupied by Walmart and by Giant Eagle. KDKA Photojournalist Brian Smithmyer The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that a Walmart spokesperson says there shouldn't be any changes to the center, adding that the company wants to continue to do business in Bethel Park and that purchasing the plaza provides the best opportunity to serve customers on a long-term basis. "Walmart owns most of its store properties and generally prefers to do so," the spokesperson said. It's unclear if the sale of the property could impact the operations of Giant Eagle.

Why Giant Eagle is bringing back plastic bags at most of its Columbus locations

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – About one year after debuting reusable fabric grocery bags, Giant Eagle is switching back to plastic at most of its Columbus stores. In May 2024, the Pennsylvania-based grocery giant rolled out free fabric grocery bags in the Columbus area and some other U.S. markets, eliminating plastic bags. However, Giant Eagle claims customers did not use the fabric bags as intended. 'Unfortunately, we have not seen strong customer adoption of these reusable bags, with most not being reused and many likely being discarded after a single use,' a Giant Eagle spokesperson told NBC4. 'With this learning – and knowing that the fabric bags are not recyclable – we believe a change in approach is warranted.' Now, Columbus stores are switching back to plastic, but with a twist. The grocery chain has introduced a new plastic grocery bag made of 75% recycled plastic. The company estimates the new bags will result in a reduction of nearly 4 million pounds of plastic. 'This new single-use plastic bag is reminiscent of the traditional plastic grocery bag customers have become accustomed to over the years, but with a significantly better environmental impact,' the spokesperson said. Giant Eagle's fabric bags were launched in select markets across its five-state footprint, totaling nearly half of its approximately 200 supermarkets. Stores in the Erie, Pennsylvania, and Cuyahoga County, Ohio, markets are also switching back to plastic bags. Some areas Giant Eagle serves have city legislation prohibiting the use of single-use plastic, so the fabrics bags will remain in those areas. The new plastic bags will be implemented in all Columbus-area stores except for Giant Eagle's Bexley Market District Express, as the city has a plastic bag ban that took effect in 2022. The introduction of the new plastic bags at Columbus stores began this month, according to the company. Giant Eagle's fabric bags were part of a larger initiative to reduce plastic waste — a common effort among grocery stores. Whole Foods stopped offering plastic bags in 2008, becoming the first American grocer to do so, according to the company. Trader Joe's followed suit in 2019 and Aldi in 2023. Seven years ago, Kroger pledged to eliminate plastic bags in its stores by 2025, but that goal seemingly fell flat. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
