India plays active role in R&D, support functions, says G+D's digital chief
NEW DELHI: German Internet of Things (IoT) company, Giesecke+Devrient ( G+D ), said it is investing to grow its headcount and local research and development (R&D) capabilities. 'The skills and talents we find in India are attractive to us. We are also further investing in our R&D skills in India, and in our support functions, such as IT, like security. So India plays an active role in our overall strategy,' Gabriel von Mitschke-Collande, chief digital officer (CDO), G+D, told ETTelecom in an exclusive interview. He, however, declined to divulge specific details and statistics. The privately held company does not release financials. Global companies, such as G+D, MediaTek , and Qualcomm , that operate across the IoT value chain, are benefiting from the Central government's initiatives such as the advanced metering initiative (AMI) for converting conventional electricity meters into smart prepaid meters, the automobile industry's move towards connected cars and electric vehicles (EVs), as well as, smart agriculture and AIS 140-supported asset tracking. The executive said Indian digital chief executives are prioritising the automation of internal processes, innovation of new services and products, and how to capture opportunities driven by disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI). Mitschke-Collande said G+D is tapping into AI, and has deployed a ChatGPT tenant to drive knowledge management and training for employees. The maker of physical SIMs is also leveraging the technology to enhance its products and services, and using data and analytics to provide insights for customers. He added that despite the upsides, misuse of AI and generative AI by malicious actors can contribute to fraud incidents. 'It is a tool which helps all of us, but manual intervention is always needed. AI has a positive and negative impact. A user needs to be aware of both dimensions,' the executive said. Market tracker Counterpoint Research said in a report recently that shipments of cellular IoT modules in India grew strongly by 32% year-on-year in the January to March quarter of 2025, fueled by the government's AMI programme, which seeks to replace 250 million electricity meters with smart prepaid meters across state-owned DISCOMs. By contrast, the global shipments were up by 16%. Recounting India's AgriStack programme for smart agriculture, which was approved by the Narendra Modi government last year, the executive said it has the potential to contribute to the IoT industry's growth in the country. 'Again, IoT is driven by the use case. So whenever connectivity helps give insight into processes, quality, and quantity, then it helps. This is relevant in agriculture, which is a huge industry in India, and is also probably a very interesting, interesting field of technology.'Mitschke-Collande said. As per the executive, the analysis of data generated from IoT devices for specific use cases, can help enterprises take more informed decisions. 'It is about collecting the right data in the right structure. And once you have done so, then you can build your analysis, and then you can get the magic out of the data, which we are all aiming for,' he added. G+D, which manufactures some products and equipment in India, said it is 'satisfied' with its production activities.
