‘Life of the party': Gilbert Shino, 39, fatally shot outside Sydney pub
A man shot dead outside an inner-Sydney pub in what police believe was a targeted attack has been identified. Gilbert Shino, 39, was shot outside The Harold Hotel in Forest Lodge at about 6.40pm on Sunday. He and another man - identified as Maradona Yalda, 31 - were walking back from the pub at the time of the shooting. Leichhardt Police Area Commander Superintendent Alf Sergi said numerous bullets were sprayed in the street, with one hitting a window and narrowly missing a female staff member. 'It's a narrow street there, and also the pub nearby - obviously the bullets were fired in that direction at the pub,' he said. 'It would have been very, very frightening.' Medical students who were inside the pub at the time of the shooting treated both Mr Shino and Mr Yalda at the scene. Mr Shino died from his injuries, and Mr Yalda was rushed to hospital in a serious condition. A family friend has paid tribute to Mr Shino in setting up an online fundraiser, describing him as the 'life of the party' who was 'always smiling' and 'touched every person who had the blessing of knowing him'. 'He truly was an amazing human being, and his absence leaves a hole in all of our hearts,' it read. Mr Shino's wife Natasha shared a tribute to her late husband online, saying he was her 'life'. 'How am I going to live without you? You were my life,' she wrote as per The Daily Telegraph. 'Since school, life's up and downs … even though days are work you were there making the days full of fun and laughter.' Those behind the shooting fled the scene in a dark vehicle, which police later identified as a dark blue Mustang. On Monday about 9.50pm, police were called to Primrose Ave in Rydalmere after reports a car was on fire. 'Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire and there are no reports of injuries,' a police statement read. The car fire is being treated as suspicious, with investigations to determine whether the vehicle is linked to the fatal shooting ongoing. 'Any links to recent incidents will be examined as part of the investigation, though none have been confirmed at this stage,' they said. Speaking to 2GB on Monday, Superintendent Sergi said the shooting was an 'outrageous, brazen, callous attack'. ' (Mr Shino) suffered gunshot wounds and fell to the ground,' he said. 'Police were nearby … they treated the man with the help of a doctor that was a resident nearby, and also paramedics, but unfortunately he succumbed to his wounds. He said Mr Yalda was chased by the gunman and was 'shot a number of times' before he slumped down at the back of the hotel. 'Again, police rendered first aid, assisted by some medical students who were in the pub as well, and an ambulance came and took him to hospital. He's in a stable condition at this point in time,' he said. Superintendent Sergi said the incident was likely targeted, with police alleging Mr Yalda's background had 'possible links to organised criminal networks'. He said he was not aware of any criminal links to Mr Shino. On Monday, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the incident was a 'horrifying, violent criminal act'. 'It's deplorable, it's disgusting, it's the kind of thing that you don't expect to see in a reasonably safe city like Sydney,' he said. He said while he could not 'promise an end to this despicable and horrific violence', he said there would be a 'comprehensive police response'. 'NSW Police have locked up and put in jail for decades the people who are responsible for these violent, public gangland crimes," he said.

The big question his mates are all asking about the mysterious gangland murder of 'hard-working tradie' gunned down outside an inner city Sydney pub - as cash floods in to support his grieving family
A Sydney man who was brutally murdered in a quiet inner west street on Sunday night had no connection to the city's criminal underbelly, according to friends. Gilbert Shino, 39, was shot dead by a hail of bullets at 6.35pm as he walked from the Harold pub in Forest Lodge to his car on Sunday night, in what police are investigating as a gangland hit. His friend, Maradona Yalda, 31, was also shot but survived his injuries. Mr Yalda - who is recovering in hospital - only returned to Australia four days before the murder, and according to police sources was 'aware' there was a contract on his head. Mr Yalda is understood to have links with an Assyrian street gang called DLASTHR, along with former Comanchero bikie Andre Kallita, who has since left the club. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Mr Yalda. But a long-time friend of Mr Shino, who previously worked with him for eight years at Capital Smart car repairs, insisted on Tuesday that his mate did not have links to any criminal gangs. Milan Toma, who now owns building company Blueprint Master Projects, said Mr Shino had recently worked a weekend for him. 'He was a hard-working man, why would he need to work so hard just to pay the bills if he had links to those things [gangs]?' Mr Toma told Daily Mail. Mr Toma, who was distraught over the loss of his friend and colleague, said he was close with Mr Shino but that they had not spent time together socially in some time. He could not explain why Mr Shino and Mr Yalda chose to travel to the Harold to watch UFC, given it was a 45-minute drive from the Middleton Grange home Mr Shino shared with his wife and two daughters. Meanwhile, massive donations have flooded in to a GoFundMe appeal raising money for Mr Shino's wife Natasha Avakian and their two young daughters Montana and Isla. Mr Shino and Ms Avakian last year suffered a miscarriage of a baby they named Marley. Mr Toma personally donated $5,000 to the fundraiser, which has so far collected more than $67,000 of its $100,000 goal in less than 24 hours. 'I feel very sorry for his family,' he said. 'Gibs was a very positive person who adored his girls. It's a big loss.' Many people with the surname Yalda - thought to be Maradona's family members - have made several large donations to the fund. A man named James Yalda contributed $2500, while a woman named Natalie Yalda donated $300. In setting up the appeal, fundraiser organiser Ashie Mikael said: 'This GoFundMe has been created to help support his wife and daughters during this unimaginable time. 'While nothing can take away the pain, we hope to ease some of the heavy burden they now face. 'Our beloved Gilby... was a devoted husband and a loving father to two beautiful girls who adored him more than anything in this world. 'His family was his everything, and he would have moved mountains to make sure they were cared for and loved. 'To his friends and family, he was more than just someone we loved - he was the life of the party, always smiling, always lifting others up, and always there when you needed him.' Widow Ms Avakian shared an emotional tribute to her slain partner last night. 'How am I going to live without you? You were my life,' she posted to Instagram. In a comment on Facebook, she wrote, 'Why did you leave us?' with a heartbreak emoji. Daily Mail has reached out to Ms Avakian for comment. A separate post revealed his family would be accepting condolences at St Mary's Assyrian Church of the East in Smithfield on Tuesday evening, with funeral arrangements to follow. Mr Shino died at the scene on Sunday night, despite the efforts of paramedics and an off-duty doctor. It is understood he worked at Capital Smash Repairs, and grew up in Western Sydney. According to his Facebook profile, he attended St John's Park High School in Greenfield Park. A Middleton Grange neighbour on Monday told Daily Mail that Mr Shino was extremely friendly and would always say hello, while his wife was more reserved. The neighbour said he had seen police visiting the couple's home, but that no one answered the door. He added that their blue Mazda hatchback was missing from the driveway. Police are investigating whether a torched Ford Mustang, found in Rydalmere at 9.50pm on Monday night, is linked to the shooting, although no connections have been made at this stage. The gunman behind the 'outrageous, brazen, callous attack' remains on the run on Tuesday. No arrests have been made. Police are investigating a number of motives, including whether the shooting is related to an internal dispute among Assyrian gang members. They're also looking at potential links to a recent firebombing in Sydney's west. Police also revealed that Mr Yalda and his friend had just left the pub when they were ambushed. 'They were making their way to the car, which was parked about 100m up the road,' Leichhardt Superintendent Alf Sergi told 2GB's Ben Fordham on Monday. 'As they got closer to the vehicle, they appear to have been ambushed. Shots fired. 'The 39-year-old male, he suffered gunshot wounds and fell to the ground. 'Police were nearby… they treated the man with the help of a doctor that was a resident nearby, and also paramedics, but unfortunately he succumbed to his wounds.' Mr Yalda was chased by the gunman before shots were fired. A man standing near Mr Shino could be heard on the phone shouting, 'he's my best friend'. The gastropub was packed with patrons enjoying dinner at the time. Staff locked the entrance as people sheltered under tables while dozens of shots were fired outside. A car parked outside the venue, which opened in 1880, on Ross Street was hit by several bullets. 'A bullet did hit a window and narrowly missed a female staff member… it's a narrow street there, and also the pub nearby, obviously the bullets were flying in that direction. It would have been very, very frightening for them,' Superintendent Sergi said. 'We believe it's a targeted attack based on one of the victim's backgrounds with possible links to organised criminal networks.' Police haven't ruled out more than one gunman being involved. 'At this stage it is not clear, so we're working on the principle that it's one gunman, but there's possibly more,' Superintendent Sergi said. 'We're looking for a vehicle, a dark-coloured vehicle… we're really looking forward to the public giving us information, especially dashcam, to help put the pieces of the puzzle together.' Local residents were told to stay inside their homes as police scoured the area and sealed off the crime scene. State Crime Command's Homicide Squad is assisting detectives with the investigation. It is the 13th public shooting and the fourth fatal attack across Sydney in the last eight months. Not all victims have had underworld links. Plumber John Versace was executed in his driveway in Condell Park in a case of mistaken identity.

‘Wrong person, wrong time': Forest Lodge shooting leaves beloved father-of-two dead, 'targeted' associate fighting for life
A Sydney man has been remembered as a kind and loving father-of-two after he was gunned down in a public shooting outside The Harold Hotel in Forest Lodge. Emergency services were called to Ross Street following reports of a public shooting where reports of more than 15 shots were fired. Police confirmed 39-year-old Gilbert Shino died at the scene, while his friend, 31-year-old Maradona Yalda, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds to his legs, neck, and chest. Witnesses described bullets 'flying everywhere,' with hotel staff narrowly avoiding injury. Investigators believe Yalda, who was known to police and had links to Sydney's criminal underworld, was the intended target. The attack came just days after he returned to Australia from time spent abroad in Dubai, Singapore and Bali. He had come back to Sydney to visit his sick grandmother and ignored the life threats he had received in the past with a price on his head set by underworld criminals, according to The Daily Telegraph. Relatives and friends say his friend Shino had no criminal ties, describing him instead as a family man who loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, Natasha Avakian, and their two young daughters, aged nine and seven. 'He was the life of the party, always smiling, always lifting others up,' one relative said on Instagram. Another relative told Sky News, 'Gilbert was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong childhood friend.' A GoFundMe page launched by family friend Ashie Michael to support Shino's young family has already raised more than $65,000 from over 120 donations. Ms Michael wrote on the fundraiser website, 'It breaks my heart to be writing this, but our beloved Giby was taken from us far too soon. He was a devoted husband and a loving father… his warmth, kindness, and joy touched every person who had the blessing of knowing him.' Condolences will be received at St Mary's Assyrian Church of the East in Smithfield on Tuesday evening, with a funeral service expected to be held on Thursday, August 21. Police have located a burnt-out car on Monday evening in Rydalmere believed to be linked to the attack. Forensic teams are examining the vehicle as part of the investigation. While detectives are yet to confirm if Shino was deliberately targeted, friends and family maintain he had no involvement in organised crime and was an innocent victim of Sydney's escalating gangland violence.

Police probing burnt-out sports car following dramatic fatal shooting at pub in Forest Lodge in Sydney's inner west
A suspicious sports car fire is at the centre of a police investigation into a fatal shooting outside an inner-west Sydney pub over the weekend, with police probing all possible links to the dramatic incident that left one man dead. Firefighters extinguished the fire on Primrose Avenue, Rydalmere in Sydney's west about 9.50pm on Monday, with police now treating the blaze as suspicious, a NSW Police statement said. The are no reported injuries as a result of the fire. It follows a dramatic public shooting outside a pub in Forest Lodge in the city's inner west on Sunday evening, during which one man died and another was seriously injured. Gilbert Shino, 39, has been named as the man was killed, with his friend Maradona Yalda, 31, identified as the man who survived. Mr Yalda is in a stable condition following two surgeries. The survivor reportedly has links to Assyrian street gang DLASTHR - otherwise known as 'the last hour' - and is known to former Comanchero member Andre Kallita. The two men had been shot multiple times, with police believing the bullets were fired by unknown people who fled the scene in a car. The burnt-out car discovered in Rydalmere is a Ford Mustang that matches the description of a vehicle spotted near Sunday's shooting, The Daily Telegraph has reported. NSW Police have said "any links to recent incidents will be examined" as part of the probe into the car fire. However, no links have been confirmed at this stage, the statement said. Police are urging anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage relating to the blaze to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000. A major police probe was launched following the shooting in Forest Lodge, with patrons of The Harold Park Hotel reportedly taking cover under tables for a short time after shots were fired. A crime scene was set up and detectives launched an investigation involving the Homicide Squad. Police are seeking to identify a dark blue Ford Mustang spotted in the vicinity of the pub after the incident. NSW Police confirmed on Tuesday morning that no arrests have yet been made in relation to the shooting and inquiries remain ongoing.
