Italian court partially cancels government rules limiting renewable projects

MILAN, May 13 (Reuters) - An Italian regional court has overturned some of the restrictions imposed by a recent government decree on the development of new renewable energy projects, a ruling published on Tuesday showed. As a consequence, the government will have to amend the decree issued last year, that mandated regional governments to identify so-called 'suitable areas' for green energy projects within six months. "The court ruling ... partially cancels the decree that we had prepared in agreement with the other ministries," said energy minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, adding the ministry would review the court's decision before revising the decree.

BW Singapore regasification unit to start operations in May

The BW Singapore floating regasification unit, moored 8.5km off Punta Marina in eastern Italy since 28 February, is set to commence operations in early May, enhancing Italy's gas capacity. The first US liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo arrived on 3 April, marking the start of commissioning activities. The BW Singapore regasification unit, similar to the Italis LNG terminal in Piombino, boasts an annual regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic metres (bcm). The unit, acquired by Snam in July 2022, can function both as a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) and as a carrier for LNG transport. Upon operation, Italy's total regasification capacity will increase to 28bcm annually, matching the volume imported from Russia in 2021. This capacity will cover 45% of Italy's domestic gas demand, offering diverse supply routes and mitigating geopolitical tensions. Snam CEO Stefano Venier confirmed the operational readiness during a visit to the offshore terminal by Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Emilia-Romagna Region President Michele de Pascale. 'With the entry into operation of the Ravenna terminal, we are adding another fundamentally important element to the process of securing the country's energy supply, which began in the aftermath of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and has been made possible by the joint efforts of institutions and companies at both national and local level,' Venier said. "We are not only keeping on schedule, we are also showing that this can go hand in hand with environmental protection and monitoring,' he added. Snam recently agreed to acquire a 24.99% stake in Vier Gas Holding (VGH) from Infinity Investments, an investment vehicle of Abu Dhabi's Investment Authority, for €920m ($1.02bn). VGH fully owns Open Grid Europe (OGE), Germany's largest independent gas transmission company. OGE manages a 12,000km network with an annual offtake volume of around 21bcm, serving more than 400 end customers. This acquisition provides Snam with a minority share in OGE, facilitating its participation in the German gas market and potential expansion in Europe's energy infrastructure. This country just reversed a 40-year ban that could change the future of nuclear energy: 'A crucial choice'

Italy's Energy Minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, is taking a no-nonsense approach to the country's stance on nuclear energy, stating to Reuters: "Italy is ready to return to nuclear power, a crucial choice that will not replace renewables but will complement them." It's an interesting reversal, especially considering Italy's blanket ban on nuclear energy that's been in place for nearly four decades. Thanks to the Three Mile Island meltdown and the Chernobyl disaster, public pressure helped force the move back in the mid-1980s. The entertainment industry and long-term public perceptions have done much to restrict the advancement of nuclear energy, despite the level of safety measures and protective technologies that exist today. Italy's estimates are staggering, even if nuclear energy is only a little over one-tenth of the country's energy infrastructure. Over the next 25 years, upward of €17 billion ($17.8 billion) is the estimated savings in decarbonization costs. Stateside, the nuclear energy sector is looking up. The Inflation Reduction Act offers significant incentives via nuclear energy production tax credits for existing facilities. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocates funding for small, modular nuclear reactor technology demonstrations. The ADVANCE Act enhances U.S. civil nuclear leadership, strengthening the supply chain, and easing the licensing requirements for advanced nuclear technologies. Lastly, the Nuclear Fuel Security Act is fueling (pun intended) domestic enrichment capabilities. Clean energy technology is a must, especially with 60% of the U.S. and 80% of the world relying on dirty energy sources as of 2023. A single kilogram of uranium-235 can theoretically generate 2,000,000 times more energy than a kilogram of coal, without the pollution. Nuclear also has an operating capacity of over 90%, while coal sits somewhere between 60% and 70%. Honestly, it's kind of a no-brainer, with the largest resisting force being the perceptions of the people and, in many instances, the dirty energy industry. Some dirty energy companies have diversified into nuclear or renewable energies, likely reading the writing on the wall. What's your biggest concern about nuclear energy? The possibility of meltdowns The waste it creates The way reactors look No concerns here! Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. As far as Italy is concerned, there is already a degree of coordination with the U.S. Westinghouse proposed utilizing old Italian nuclear sites to facilitate the construction of the aforementioned small, modular reactors. Of course, things are still in the planning and talking stage, so it remains to be seen. In the meantime, a greener future is reliant on partnerships, cooperation on which Pichetto Fratin was clear: "The scale of investment in nuclear power requires cooperation with several international players." Airport makes game-changing decision about an unusual piece of its property: 'A perfect example'

Rome's Fiumicino Airport is setting a new global standard for sustainability with its exciting move to begin harnessing solar power. In this groundbreaking project, led by energy group Enel and network service provider Circet, the airport has revealed its large-scale solar farm, aimed to significantly reduce its carbon impact, according to Reuters. The farm spans nearly 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) across the airport's eastern perimeter. This makes it not only the largest solar-powered system within a European airport but also one of the largest in the entire world. This is part of a €200 million ($208.5 million) initiative by Aeroporti di Roma to increase the country's investment in sustainable mobility. Currently, it has a peak capacity of 22 megawatts, but the airport has a plan to increase this number all the way to 60 megawatts in the next five years. The ambition doesn't stop there, either. The overarching goal is to make the pollution of both Rome's airports net zero by 2030, meaning the aim is to remove the same amount of pollution they are putting into the air, according to the Energy Institute. Fiumicino's project is centered around the potential of repurposing underutilized land to support clean energy goals. According to Reuters, Mundys (Aeroporti di Roma's parent company) chairman Giampiero Massolo said the project is "a perfect example of how airport grounds can be optimized to enable sustainable growth." The benefits of this solar farm spread far beyond Fiumicino. By reducing pollution by over 11,000 tons annually, this project sets a precedent for airports worldwide. This move reflects a growing trend of sustainable airport policies. For instance, Australia's Brisbane Airport has begun its $5 billion dedication to sustainability through its "Ground Service Electrification" project, and Dubai is at work installing the world's largest rooftop solar system at its Dubai International and Dubai World Central airports. These initiatives all serve as evidence of the aviation industry's push toward eco-friendly practices, which will ultimately lead to healthier air to breathe across the world. Which of these factors would be your main motivation for installing solar panels? Energy independence Lower power bills Helping the planet No chance I ever go solar Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Energy minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin expressed his positive outlook for these overlooked spaces' potential for renewable energy. "This is a demonstration of how we can use many areas that do not have monumental value or high agricultural intensity to achieve the goal of decarbonisation," he said, according to Reuters.
