The sunshine returns to Calgary this weekend
The sun is making a highly anticipated comeback on Saturday, thanks to a ridge of high pressure developing over Western Canada. gina weather / aug 8, 2025 The sun is making a highly anticipated comeback on Saturday, thanks to a ridge of high pressure developing over Western Canada. That will end the dreary conditions we experienced on Friday that brought 14 millimetres of rain to the Calgary International Airport, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. gina weather / aug 8, 2025 The low-pressure system that produced the rain is tracking to the east and currently over much of Saskatchewan, but many parts of Alberta are still dealing with the outer edges of this low. For Calgary, that will mean some light drizzle throughout the evening before the storm finally dissipates overnight. Saturday morning is when we'll get the most sunshine. Come the afternoon, as the ridge nudges in, we could see some weak instability that will produce cloudy conditions and a slight chance of some evening showers. gina weather / aug 8, 2025 Sunday will start off cloudy, but the high pressure will allow for nice clearing and sunshine throughout the afternoon. The normal high for Calgary at this time of year is 23 C. On Saturday, we will hit a high of 22 C and then bump up to 26 C on Sunday. gina weather / aug 8, 2025 We will hold on to the nice above-seasonal conditions until Wednesday, when the notable drop in the 10-day trend indicates the potential for another cool low-pressure system entering the province, driving down the temperatures and likely bringing some wet weather as well.

Another wet weather system approaching Alberta
We likely won't see that idyllic summer day until Saturday, it looks like, and we will have to put up with more rain first. gina weather / aug 5, 2025 There have been many Calgarians questioning when the usual August weather will actually arrive, considering it has felt a little cooler and wetter so far this summer compared to recent years. When it comes to temperatures, Calgary is well within the seasonal range for the next little while, now we just need the sun to co-operate. Unfortunately, we likely won't see that idyllic summer day until Saturday, it looks like, and we will have to put up with more rain first. A powerful low-pressure system along the Saskatchewan/U.S. border was the influencer of our active weather along the foothills on Tuesday. gina weather / aug 5, 2025 As the picture shows, a surface high-pressure cell was sitting over the B.C. Rockies on Tuesday afternoon. Here's the thing with high-pressure winds: they like to move toward centres of low pressure. So what happened Tuesday is the winds over the Rockies are being pulled toward the Saskatchewan low, and given the steep contrast in terrains, this created a bunch of pulse thunderstorms in the foothills. Cochrane saw one of those storms develop into a supercell around 4 p.m., bringing a downpour of rain and small-sized hail. Calgary could also be in the line of fire when it comes to active weather throughout the evening, too, though conditions start to calm down overnight. Wednesday is shaping up to be pretty similar to Tuesday, with a sunny morning followed by building clouds in the afternoon with the potential for some early evening thunderstorms, though the risk appears to be lower on Wednesday. gina weather / aug 5, 2025 Our next weather-maker comes in the form of an upper low-pressure system that will create a trough over southern Alberta late Thursday into Friday. Expect cloudy conditions for much of southern Alberta and rainfall totals currently estimated between five and 10 millimetres, though that's subject to change as this system gets closer and we get a better idea of its movement. And then at last, Saturday should bring the start of some stable and sunny weather that should please many Calgarians who have been yearning for some hot summer sunshine.

Calgary in path of severe thunderstorms Friday night
Friday could be the most active night of weather for the summer so far. A powerful low-pressure system in south-central B.C. is pushing our way, and Calgary is shaping up to be right in the line of fire of some hazardous weather that could bring 90 km/h winds, two-to-five-centimetre-diameter hail and localized rain amounts of 25 to 50 millimetres. gina weather / july 18, 2025 It's going to be an evening to protect, secure or remove any items exposed to the elements that could be damaged or at risk of blowing away and harming someone or something. The main timeframe of the most severe weather will likely be between the hours of 7 p.m. and 12 a.m., with the storm dissipating around 3 a.m. Saturday. The rest of Saturday morning will be calm and relatively clear, but that allows for surface heating like we saw today, with the warm rising air creating another round of instability for tomorrow afternoon and into the evening. gina weather / july 18, 2025 Sunday, the thunderstorm risk is reduced, but we will still remain under a very large trough of low pressure that will continue to circulate clouds and rain over southern Alberta throughout the rest of the weekend, with more sustained cloud coverage and rainfall into the first few days of next week. gina weather / july 18, 2025 All this instability will keep our temperatures below seasonal, with the lowest temperature of the five-day forecast on Tuesday—a high of just 14 C. We finally start to see a shift in this wet weather pattern on Wednesday, with the sun returning back into the forecast, warming us up back into seasonal territory.

Sunshine to return Tuesday, but we'll remain below seasonal temperatures
There could be some scattered showers Tuesday morning, but the rest of the day is shaping up to be clear and sunny, though below seasonal with a high of 18 C. gina weather / july 14, 2025 It's been a pretty gloomy 24 hours for Calgary and parts of southern Alberta after a gorgeous weekend of sunshine and temperatures in the mid- to high 20s. A ridge of high pressure started to break down late Sunday afternoon, resulting in the development of supercell thunderstorms fuelled by the warm, dry air. gina weather / july 14, 2025 Residents in Calgary's northwest and northeast quadrants were rocked by just such a storm right around 7 p.m. on Sunday, with strong winds and heavy rain and hail pummelling many neighbourhoods. The strongest wind recorded at the Calgary International Airport was 93 km/h, while areas south of Cypress Hills and in Claresholm recorded wind speeds of 115 km/h! gina weather / july 14, 2025 Following the storm, a more sustained system packing lots of rain moved into the city around 1 a.m. Monday that brought showers throughout the day. This system put Calgary and the surrounding areas under a rainfall warning as rapid amounts totalling 50 to 80 millimetres are possible. We will have a clearer picture of just how much rain Calgary received on Tuesday when this system has fully pushed out. gina weather / july 14, 2025 There could be some scattered showers Tuesday morning, but the rest of the day is shaping up to be clear and sunny, though below seasonal with a high of 18 C. Still much warmer than the measly 13 C the city got to Monday. Wednesday is shaping up to be stable as well, thanks to some high pressure moving in, but it won't stick around for long. By Thursday, a deep upper trough develops over Alberta, with several models in agreement that rain and thunderstorms will be possible in the late afternoon into the evening. That trend carries on into the weekend as well, with clouds, rain and more chances for thunderstorms.

Thursday could bring more active weather to Alberta
Wednesday afternoon gave us a show of how unstable the weather can be this week and it could be more of the same on Thursday. gina weather / june 25, 2025 Calgary was dosed by a classic supercell storm on Wednesday afternoon that blasted the city with rain and lit up the sky with lightning. The short-lived event developed southwest of Calgary and crossed over the city in a northeast direction during the 4 o'clock hour, impacting most communities one way or another. gina weather / june 25, 2025 More severe weather unfolded east of the city, with areas along the Saskatchewan border under severe thunderstorm watches and warnings, while Lloydminster was briefly under a tornado warning. The instability will taper off for Calgary overnight, with Thursday morning poised to be sunny and calm, but we could be in for round 2 by as early as 11 a.m., though models don't suggest as severe of weather to develop. gina weather / june 25, 2025 Even still, scattered showers with embedded non-severe thunderstorms are a possibility, and the same can be said for Friday and Saturday as well. Stability finally works its way back into the forecast on Sunday, when a ridge of high pressure moves up from the south, providing lots of sunshine and above-seasonal temperatures for the final days of June.
