He said most folks won't be impacted. 'If you're on the program [as] an illegal alien, you're going to have a problem. If you are an able-bodied, young person without dependence at home [or] if you're a 27-year-old who can work but chooses not to, yes. Our work requirements are going to require you to volunteer, go to school, get in a training program, or go to work, and we do that because we want you to improve your life,' Rep. Johnson said. South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden also answered questions from the students at USD on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. LIVINGSTON COUNTY — We're back with another excellent group of local students. Each week, high school principals and staffers in Livingston County share their nominees for Students of the Week. We share those honorees online Fridays and in print Sundays. This week's students were nominated for their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, kindness and service to their school community. A dedicated and accomplished senior, Abigail has excelled both academically and extracurricularly throughout her time at Brighton High School. With an impressive 4.15 GPA, she has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, earning 5s on multiple AP exams and securing an academic letter and honor roll recognition all four years. Her passion for learning extends beyond the classroom, as she aspires to pursue a career in Cellular and Molecular Biology at either Michigan State University or the University of Michigan. In addition to her academic achievements, Abigail has been an active leader and participant in various school activities. She's been a four-year member of the marching and concert bands, showing dedication to the school's music program. Athletically, she has contributed to the softball team throughout high school, earning the Most Improved Player Award and competing at a high level through travel softball. Beyond academics and athletics, she has also made a positive impact on the school community through her involvement as a BKOM Mentor, with the BHS National Honor Society (NHS) and as a member of the Induction Committee. She has also served the community through volunteer experience as part of the music program. This past summer, Abigail attended Girls State at MSU, where she gained valuable leadership training and experience. She was honored with a position as a Supreme Court Justice in the Girls State Program. Her leadership, perseverance and well-rounded involvement make her an outstanding role model for her peers. Abigail exemplifies the values of hard work, determination and leadership. Madison, a senior at Fowlerville High School, is a dedicated and hardworking student who actively participates in various school and community activities. She is enrolled in the Agricultural Science CTE Block Class and is an engaged member of FFA, where she continues to develop her knowledge and skills in the field. In addition, Madison is a member of the Interact Club and takes dance classes, demonstrating her well-rounded interests and commitment to personal growth. She is a goal-setter who consistently works toward the high standards she sets for herself, showing perseverance and dedication in all that she does. A quiet leader, Madison leads by example, serving as a role model through her strong work ethic and determination, making her a true representation of what it means to be a Gladiator. Gabrielle is Student of the Week for Hartland High School. Gabby has been in the cadet teaching program for two years and always goes above and beyond, according to her teacher Mrs. Wozny. She has a classroom of kindergartners that adore her, and lots of teachers, too. Gabby represents the student we would all love to have: inclusive, caring, helpful and passionate towards learning. Nick is an outstanding student who demonstrates dedication and excellence in the classroom and athletics. He is enrolled in several AP courses and a high-level Spanish class while maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA. In addition to his academic achievements, Nick is a multi-sport athlete, showcasing his commitment, discipline and teamwork. Nick's hard work and determination set an excellent example for his peers and all of Highlander Nation. Jackson, a sophomore, has shown impressive perseverance by actively learning more about his college plans and how to navigate the application process. He consistently demonstrates gratitude to those who support him along the way, appreciating the guidance and encouragement he receives. Jackson's open-minded attitude allows him to seek opportunities for personal and academic growth, always striving to improve. He exemplifies the traits of the Positivity Project, including zest, social intelligence and humor, all of which contribute to his positive impact on those around him. Violet is the kind of student who leads by example, balancing professionalism, kindness and a strong work ethic in everything she does. As a senior and the managing editor of the yearbook, she knows how to stay organized, meet deadlines and collaborate with her peers to create something meaningful. Her ability to work well with others and maintain a positive attitude makes her a role model for younger students. On top of that, she's an excellent writer and a strong math student, using her skills to tutor peers who need extra support. Outside of school, Violet is already gaining real-world experience in a field she's passionate about. She works at a funeral home, where she manages clients with professionalism and care, reinforcing her goal of attending mortuary school. Her interest in forensic science drives her ambition, and her eye for fashion adds a unique touch to her personality. Whether she's leading a team, helping others or preparing for her future career, Violet's dedication and confidence set her apart. — Contact reporter Evan Sasiela at esasiela@ Follow him on X @SalsaEvan.
