Rep. Dusty Johnson speaks to students in Vermillion about moves being made in Washington
VERMILLION, S.D. (KCAU) — This week, South Dakota's representative stepped away from Capitol Hill to speak with students in Vermillion.
Wednesday morning, Representative Dusty Johnson answered questions from students at the University of South Dakota.
The students are members of the American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State Program, which helps girls get involved in government and volunteering.

While Johnson was visiting, many of the same topics were brought up, including concerns about cuts to Medicaid. He said most folks won't be impacted.
'If you're on the program [as] an illegal alien, you're going to have a problem. If you are an able-bodied, young person without dependence at home [or] if you're a 27-year-old who can work but chooses not to, yes. Our work requirements are going to require you to volunteer, go to school, get in a training program, or go to work, and we do that because we want you to improve your life,' Rep. Johnson said.
South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden also answered questions from the students at USD on Wednesday.

Florida A&M University's controversial new president, Marva Johnson, is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Many people find that news surprising due to her conservative views. In May, Johnson was selected as the 13th president of Florida A&M last month despite major pushback from alumni, students, and supporters. On May 16, the Board of Trustees met, and Johnson was chosen by a vote of 8 to 4. She is just the second woman to be appointed as president of Florida A&M in the university's history. After Elmira Mangum, who was president from 2014 to 2016. Following weeks of intense discussion, campus visits, and growing resistance from community residents, students, and alumni who questioned Johnson's credentials and connections to Republican political figures, the choice was made. Johnson had previously worked for Florida Governors Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis as a political appointee. She currently works at Charter Communications as Vice President of State Government, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Due to Johnson's lack of experience and political ties, especially to Ron DeSantis, supporters of the university and other members of the HBCU community are against her appointment. Due to the Florida Board of Governors, DeSantis and his appointees had significant influence over Johnson becoming president. The State University System of Florida is governed by the Board of Governors, which is the highest authority. For campus-level decisions, each institution has its own Board of Trustees, but for system-wide policy, the Board of Governors has the last word. During the search for a new president, four trustees supported Donald Palm, one of the four contenders for the 13th presidency. At the university, he currently serves as the chief operating officer and executive vice president. Palm was also endorsed by the Florida A&M National Alumni Association. 'We are proud to formally endorse Dr. Donald Palm as our preferred candidate for the 13th President of Florida A&M University,' FAMU NAA President Curtis Johnson said in a May 10 letter to the association's members obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat. He added in the letter, 'Dr. Palm's deep connection to FAMU as the current chief operating officer, former faculty member, and long-standing champion of our mission positions him uniquely to continue our trajectory of excellence.' Johnson's appointment comes after former president Dr. Larry Robinson resigned following the $237 million donation scandal with Gregory Gerami. Dr. Timothy Beard was appointed interim president and served a one-year term until a permanent president was found. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University by nine collegiate women. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest established Greek-letter organization for Black women. The sorority has over 355,000 members, including Vanessa Bell Calloway, Phylicia Rashad, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Patti LaBelle, and Coretta Scott King.

It will make American Air Travel GREAT AGAIN by purchasing the final Air Traffic Control System." The president said the bill includes the construction of The Gold Dome, which he says will secure American skies from adversaries. Governor travels to Alaska to attend energy summit, meet with federal officials
Jun. 2—SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is racking up frequent flier miles, as she departed Sunday for a three-day energy summit in Alaska. The governor, who led a two-week trade mission to Japan and Singapore in April, will meet with top Trump administration officials while attending the sustainable energy conference in Anchorage. Specifically, she plans to meet with Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin about possible partnerships between the federal government and New Mexico, according to the Governor's Office. "New Mexico's thriving economy is powered by our leadership in advanced energy and manufacturing," Lujan Grisham said in a statement, citing New Mexico's efforts in the areas of geothermal and hydrogen energy, along with steps aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The state recently passed North Dakota to become the second-highest oil-producing state in the country — behind only Texas — and is also a major exporter of natural gas. In recent interviews, the governor has made it clear she intends to forge relationships with Trump administration officials when possible, even while criticizing Republican-backed plans to trim spending on Medicaid and other programs. While in Alaska, the governor will lead a delegation that also includes state Economic Development Secretary Rob Black, Environment Secretary James Kenney and Caroline Buerkle, the deputy chief of operations for the Governor's Office. As an official state trip, the delegation's travel costs will be paid for by taxpayer dollars, said Lujan Grisham spokeswoman Jodi McGinnis Porter. The fourth annual Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference will also feature speeches by officials from several national laboratories, including both Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, according to the conference's website. Per the state Constitution, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales will serve as acting governor until Lujan Grisham returns to New Mexico on Wednesday.
