New Girvan flag to be revealed next weekend

A ceremony will take place to unveil which design won the public vote and will become the new flag of Girvan. Girvan 's new community flag is set to be unveiled at a ceremony on Saturday, August 2. ‌ A public vote to decide the winning design has now closed and the votes are being tallied up. ‌ Plans are in place to have the winning design brought in over sea by Girvan RNLI, both in a nod to the town's maritime history and the importance of the lifeboat to the community. ‌ Once delivered by the lifeboat, it will be handed over to Phillip Tibbets of the Court of the Lord Lyon and will be marched to Stumpy Corner, accompanied by the newly reformed Girvan Pipe Band, where the unveiling ceremony will take place to legally hand the flag to the people of Girvan. After being whittled down from 184 entries, four designs were chosen and approved by the Court of the Lord Lyon to potentially become the town's flag. Earlier this year, a number of community groups came together to organise a competition, in consultation with the Court of the Lord Lyon, to design a town flag. ‌ Speaking to Ayrshire Live, Alan Jeans of Girvan Arts Festival - one of the community groups behind the flag design competition - said: "The Girvan Community Flag, which has been chosen from 184 designs submitted in a competition run by Girvan Arts Festival, will be revealed at a ceremony at Stumpy corner. "The flag will be delivered to Girvan Harbour by the Girvan Lifeboat at 11am. It will be handed over to Phillip Tibbets, the Lyon Court's representative who has overseen the project, and will be marched, accompanied by the newly reformed Girvan Pipe Band, to Stumpy where the ceremony will take place to legally hand the flag to the people of Girvan. "After the winning flag design is revealed, it will be passed over to Girvan Community Council and hoisted on the flagpole next to Stumpy Tower. ‌ "After the event is over, the Girvan Lifeboat Crew are running a burger stall at their open day, where you can see round the lifeboat and the lifeboat station. Music on the Prom will be providing the music. "The lifeboat crew are also taking over the Girvan Park Run at 9.30am that morning, encouraging as many people as possible to do the 5k run in fancy dress. The RNLI mascot, Stormy Stan, will also be running, along with some of the crew in their yellows." ‌ Community flags have become more popular in the last decade after flags were designed for Caithness and Sutherland. In 2023, Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Berwickshire and Moray all chose flags for their area. Programme of events for August 2: ‌ 9.30am: RNLI Girvan Lifeboat Fancy Dress Park Run 11am: Girvan Lifeboat delivers flag to Harbour 11.05am: Procession to Stumpy Tower ‌ 11.15am: Flag Ceremony with Girvan Pipe Band 11.40am: Flag reveal 11.45am: Flag raising ‌ 11.50am: Prize-giving 12pm: RNLI open day with burger stall and music from Music On The Prom
