Argentina thrash Brazil to seal World Cup qualification
Argentina produced a stunning performance to hammer their arch-rivals Brazil 4-1 in the World Cup Qualifiers. With both teams coming off a win, expectations were sky-high for this riveting contest; however, the reigning World champions made it a one-sided affair. Argentina drew first blood four minutes into the game after Julian Alvarez nodded home past a sloppy Brazilian defence. Enzo Fernandez blasted home inside the six-yard box to double the lead after Nahuel Molina's pass took a deflection off Brazilian defender Murilo. La Selecao cut the deficit just before the half-hour mark, with Matheus Cunha capitalising on Cristian Romero's defensive error. But La Albiceleste piled further misery on the visitors after Alexis Mac Allister restored the two-goal cushion following an impressive volley off Fernandez's pass. Giuliano Simeone put the game to bed in the 71st minute after firing home an incredible strike for his first senior international goal. Giuliano Simeone was pumped that his first goal for Argentina came against Brazil 😤 — B/R Football (@brfootball) March 26, 2025 Moving eight points clear at the top of the South American Qualifiers table, Argentina have also booked their place in the World Cup next year. On the other hand, Brazil endured a disastrous performance, further underlining their inconsistent form. Despite the presence of world-class attackers like Raphinha, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, La Selecao managed just only one shot on target. Other key players including, Joelinton, Marquinhos and Murilo were also underwhelming. The defeat leaves Brazil fourth in the table with 21 points. The top six teams will qualify for the World Cup. Head Coach Dorival Junior will also be on the firing line after the calamitous result. He has managed seven wins, seven defeats and one draw since taking over at the Brazilian national team. He also oversaw Brazil getting knocked out at the quarter-finals in last year's Copa America.

Getafe stun Atletico with an Arambarri brace
Atletico Madrid's Giuliano Simeone in action with Getafe's Coba Da Costa during the LaLiga fixture at Estadio Coliseum, Getafe on March 9. PHOTO: REUTERS Diego Simeone's side, second, would have gone top with a victory after leaders Barcelona's match was postponed on Saturday, and they were on course for three points after Alexander Sorloth struck from the penalty spot after 75 minutes. However Atletico forward Angel Correa was sent off and Getafe midfielder Mauro Arambarri scored two late goals to snatch victory for the hosts. Later Sunday champions Real Madrid, third, host Rayo Vallecano and if they win will pull level with Barca. Simeone picked a strong side despite the Champions League last 16 second leg clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday on the horizon. However Getafe set out to frustrate the visitors and neither team was able to trouble the other significantly in the first half. The Atletico coach's son Giuliano Simeone probed down the right and was his team's most threatening player. Getafe came closest to opening the scoring when Christantus Uche directed a header straight at Jan Oblak, when well placed to score. Atletico midfielder Rodrigo de Paul suffered a knock in the first half and was taken off at half-time with the Champions League in mind. Simeone brought on Sorloth for Julian Alvarez and it was the Norwegian who opened the scoring, from the penalty spot after Omar Alderete handled the ball. Sorloth drilled home his 10th league goal of the season, despite starting just nine times in 24 appearances. Atletico seemed comfortable with their lead until striker Correa, another substitute, was sent off for a high tackle on Djene Dakonam in the 87th minute. Moments later Atletico levelled through Arambarri, who collected a flicked-on free kick and rammed home. With 10 minutes of stoppage time added on and the wind in their sails, Getafe went for a winner and found one. Diego Rico's effort from distance was cleverly diverted home by Uruguay international Arambarri, who was just onside and snatched his team the three points. Earlier, Simeone on Saturday jumped to the defence of Javi Galan after the 30-year-old left back's below-par performances in key matches, pointing to the quality of the opposition the defender has come up against in recent weeks.

'A real fighter' - how Simeone's son emerged as key to Atletico
As a child, over coffee and croissants in their native Argentina, Giuliano Simeone chatted with his father, Diego, about the merits of taking the Atletico Madrid 14 years later, and now the most decorated coach in Los Rojiblancos' history, there is no sense the boss is merely repaying the youngest of his three sons by giving him a chance at the swapped Buenos Aires for Madrid as a 16-year-old, leaving River Plate to join Atletico's youth ranks, the 22-year-old has had to bide his time for a chance in his father's side. Few can argue he has not earned his older sibling Giovanni - when scoring regularly in Serie A - was told by 'El Cholo' that he would not sign him, external because "it's hard to have a son in the dressing room".Giuliano, meanwhile, scored 25 goals in 36 games for Atletico's B team in the Spanish fifth tier in 2021-22, earning his sole first-team appearance that year as a 91st-minute substitute in a goalless draw with development continued with loan spells at second-division Real Zaragoza and then Alaves in La Liga during the following now, heading into a derby against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday, where a win would send Atletico top of La Liga, the youngest brother suddenly finds himself a key protagonist in his father's winger has four goal involvements in his past three games. After scoring and assisting in a Champions League win over Red Bull Salzburg, he set up another in a La Liga victory against Mallorca and wrapped up a dream week by putting two goals past Getafe in a 5-0 Copa del Rey quarter-final win on Tuesday."I'm very happy, it's been crazy," he told Teledeporte afterwards. "I think about the things I have to improve day by day. I still have many flaws and details that I want to improve to keep growing." Simeone has seen his minutes managed. He only made four La Liga starts before December and has only completed 90 minutes four times in all competitions this term. But he has recently become integral, starting Atletico's past eight league games and their final five European group phase matches. In November, he also earned his first cap for Argentina. "He has worked hard, made a lot of sacrifices and assists," former Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan tells BBC Sport. "He is playing well and he has shown us that he is a quality and professional player."He is very versatile, he is adaptable. He is in a really good time, he looks comfortable on the pitch. It is a great moment for him."While more of an attacking player than the tenacious central midfielder his father was, they share some similar has shown that versatility by being deployed at centre forward early in the season but also wing-back during a 2-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen in January. As the touch map below shows, he is willing to cover the ground his father's system demands in his most common role as a right winger. "We can see similar characteristics," explains Forlan. "He's a real fighter. He knows his father is the coach, so he has to train more than normal, because everyone is always looking at him, probably more than other players."That will really encourage him, but also it means he really has to work match after match because people look at him all the time." Giuliano was born in Rome while his father was playing for Lazio, but returned to Argentina when still he was eight years old, spending time with his dad in the coastal resort of Mar del Plata, Simeone senior took that call from Atletico Madrid. He explained to The Coaches' Voice, external: "I told him: 'Look, the chance has come to go to Atletico Madrid and I don't know what to do.' And he says to me: "Are you going to manage Falcao? Falcao was there then. 'Are you going to play against Messi? Against Ronaldo?'."The kid was saying all this to me and I would say 'yes'. And, in between dipping the croissant in the milk, he said to me: 'Dad, but if you do well, you won't come back.' On the one hand that's lucky. But, on the other, it's unlucky, because I don't get to see my kids growing up."Now, however, Simeone has been joined by all three of his sons in Europe. Giuliano and Gianluca, who plays for fourth-tier Rayo Majadahonda, are in Madrid, while Giovanni, the eldest, plays for Napoli. Forlan, whose father Pablo was also a Uruguay international, says it is natural they wanted to follow in his footsteps."It's part of your DNA, in your blood," he explains. "You have been brought up focusing on football. You have seen your father play, seen your father travel."Simeone, as a father, has the opportunity to manage his son and no one is saying 'oh no, his son is playing there because his father is a coach'."No. He is having great performances and that will be of great satisfaction for himself and for his father."Continue his recent form in his first Madrid derby on Saturday, and the red-and-white half of the Spanish capital will all share in that satisfaction, too.
