‘This was my last chance': Fight to keep Job Corps open seen nationally and in Pinellas County

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Pinellas County Job Corps will host a job fair Wednesday to help its students and staff after the U.S. Department of Labor announced it would be pausing the Job Corps program nationwide. Job Corps is a vocational trade school designed to help low-income students. 4 HCPS graduates complete rare feat thousands of other students couldn't achieve 'This was my last chance to actually do something with my life so I kind of want to help save this place,' said Skye Considine, a student at Job Corps. Considine said she had about a year and a half left in her program at the Pinellas County location. Now, she and more than 100 other students have just days left before the campus closes down. The Department of Labor Secretary said, 'A startling number of serious incident reports and our in-depth fiscal analysis reveal the program is no longer achieving the intended outcomes that students deserve.' The program will pause operations at all Job Corps centers by June 30. 'Job Corps does so much and it fills so many needs in our community,' said St. Petersburg City Council Member Corey Givens. Judge blocks Florida law barring minors from social media Givens worked at this Job Corps for five years. He said the closure will leave a devastating gap. 'Not only are 150 young people trained here but over 100 people work here. Not only will you have young people who are homeless, but now you have people who won't be able to feed their families and it's just unfair,' Givens said. When asked if the city of St. Pete can do anything, Givens said they can put pressure on elected officials in congress. Tampa Bay representative Kathy Castor sent a letter to the DOL secretary asking to reverse the decision, and wants certain questions answered by June 15. Castor asked how student participation numbers were gathered for their transparency report and why one year's worth of graduation rates was given. She also asked if COVID-19 impacts were considered, if there are efficient structural changes that can be made prior to stopping operations, and more. Considine said she would tell leaders how Job Corps helped give her a future. 'It's a really good place to be here, and I don't want this place to be shut down because this was one of my only other options that I had left,' Considine said. The National Job Corps Association filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to protect Job Corps Tuesday. 'For generations, Job Corps has provided life-changing education and hands-on training to young people looking for a pathway to a better future,' said Donna Hay, President and CEO of the National Job Corps Association. 'These students are often overcoming significant personal and economic challenges and Job Corps gives them the ability to gain the skills they need to build meaningful careers.' The job fair will be Wednesday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the gym at Pinellas County Job Corps. Both students and staff may participate. See the flyer below for more information. Texas A&M will host 2026 5-star Edge for an official visit next month

Texas A&M will host 2026 5-star Edge for an official visit next month One of the elite defensive prospects in the 2026 recruiting class has Texas A&M atop his list of future destinations. Five-star edge Tristian Givens, who received a prediction to land with the Aggies earlier this month, has reportedly set his official visit with the Aggies. According to Gigem247's Anderew Hattersley, coach Mike Elko and his staff will host Givens for an official visit on June 20-22, which will serve as his final OV of the summer after visiting Tennessee on June 13. This is excellent news for the Aggies, who are not only predicted to land the elite pass rusher but have dominated the Georgia recruiting landscape after landing four-star wide receiver Aaron Gregory and four-star edge Jordan Carter from the Peach State. Given's recent interview with 247Sports' Ryan Callahan revealed that he is looking to make his college decision towards the end of June, as the Aggies will be the final school hosting the standout defender. Between Florida State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, Givens has a tough decision to make, while his future visits will make his decision much easier. During his last two seasons at Carver High School, Givens recorded 30 sacks, including 18 during his 2023 sophomore season. According to 247Sports, Givens is the 23rd-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, the third-ranked edge prospect, and the fourth-ranked prospect in Georgia. Highly Touted Star Puts Georgia on Notice

The Georgia Bulldogs were off to a fast start with one four-star edge rusher in the 2026 recruiting class. But he hasn't felt love from the Bulldogs since his initial offer. That's what four-star edge rusher Tristian Givens, a top 2026 Georgia recruit, told On3's Jeremy Johnson this week. Advertisement 'I don't too much talk to them even though I'm in the backyard, you feel me,' Givens said. 'It's all love with them, it's nothing against them… It bothers me a little bit because I'm from Georgia, so it kind of messes with me just a little bit.' A Columbus, Georgia, native, Givens is a consensus top 10 recruit in the state for the 2026 class. The 247 Sports composite rankings rated him the No. 6 Georgia prospect. Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart© Brett Davis-Imagn Images Givens grew up with a grandmother who is an Alabama Crimson Tide fan. Yet, he rooted for the Bulldogs during his childhood. 'I always grew up watching them, and I'm a Georgia fan,' Givens added. 'I'm from Georgia, and ever since my grandma always watched Alabama, I watched Georgia.' Advertisement These factors contributed to Givens not feeling super fuzzy about the Bulldogs, even though they are his "dream school." Perhaps because of how the Bulldogs have approached his recruitment, the Texas A&M Aggies hold an overwhelming lead for Givens in On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine. According to RPM, the Aggies have a 90% chance of landing the edge rusher. Johnson reported that the Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans and Florida State Seminoles are also involved with Georgia. The 247 Sports composite rankings rated Givens the No. 7 edge rusher and No. 63 overall recruit in the 2026 class. Related: Georgia Gets Bad News on Highly Coveted Star Playmaker

$250K bail set for Las Vegas corrections officer accused of deadly DUI, hit-and-run crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A judge set the bail at $250,000 for a corrections officer accused in a deadly DUI and hit-and-run crash early Mother's Day. Maurice Washington, 45, made his initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court Monday morning. He is accused of hitting and killing 58-year-old Elijah Givens, who was crossing a street around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. Las Vegas Metropolitan police said Washington was speeding on Decatur Boulevard when he struck Givens, who was crossing the street at Alta Drive, causing Givens' body to land on his car before falling onto the street. Although Givens was in a marked crosswalk, he was crossing against the light. Washington's attorney requested a lower bail, arguing that Washington doesn't have a previous criminal record, has lived in the valley his entire life, and is a corrections officer at the City of Las Vegas Detention Center for the past 19 years. Washington was off-duty at the time of the crash. During the court appearance, Judge Suzan Baucum said she considered Washington a flight risk because he left the scene of the crash. She said he only made it a half-mile from the crash when his car became inoperable, forcing him to stop. Washington returned to the crash scene about 45 minutes after it happened and was taken into custody for showing signs of impairment. Washington, who was still in custody at the Clark County Detention Center Monday morning, is facing charges of DUI, reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily injury, hit-and-run, and displaying a bogus vehicle registration, plate, or title.
