Big Mama leads Atletico to victory
LIMPOPO – Giyani Atletico's jersey number nine, affectionately known as 'Big Mama' by her teammates, played a pivotal role in leading the team to a dominant 5–0 victory over Ward 12's New Castle FC during a Mayor's Cup clash held on the side pitch of Giyani Stadium on Saturday.
Just minutes after kick-off, Big Mama wasted no time making her presence felt on the field. With remarkable speed and precision, she broke through New Castle's shaky defence and netted the opening goal, putting Atletico ahead early in the match.
New Castle's players appeared stunned and struggled to regain their composure. Before they could reorganise or settle into the game, Big Mama struck again. Capitalising on a defensive error, she fired in a second goal, further widening the gap. By the time the referee blew the whistle for half-time, Atletico was already leading 3–0.
In the second half, Atletico maintained their dominance, controlling possession and keeping constant pressure on New Castle's backline. Big Mama remained central to the action, although she narrowly missed several attempts that went just wide or were blocked at the goal line; her relentless presence continued to unsettle the opposition.
She also created multiple scoring opportunities for her teammates through clever passes and well-timed runs. It wasn't long before Atletico scored again, netting their fourth goal and tightening their grip on the match. To put the final nail in New Castle's coffin, Big Mama squared a ball into the box that resulted in a penalty for Atletico.
One of her teammates stepped up confidently and converted the spot kick, bringing the score to a commanding 5–0. The goal sealed an already emphatic performance, and the match ended with Atletico walking away victorious.
Meanwhile, as the tournament draws closer to semi semi-finals, the spotlight remained on Big Mama, also affectionately called 'Biggie' by her teammates.
Her consistent goal-scoring prowess and overall contribution to the team's success have not gone unnoticed in the past.
She was once named the top goal scorer of the tournament in the 2023 Mayor's Cup, a title that reflects her dedication, talent, and leadership.
Judging by her current form, there is a strong possibility she could clinch the top scorer award again this year.
Even more exciting is that, unlike in previous years when there were no formal prizes for individual achievements, the municipality has now allocated funds to reward outstanding players in various categories.
