Luke Tarrant delivers stunning upset in Glasshouse Handicap on pick-up ride Fortunate Kiss
The colourful riding career of Luke Tarrant took another quirky twist when he was Johnny-on-the-spot to land the Glasshouse Handicap on late pick-up ride Fortunate Kiss. Tarrant has had his trials and tribulations and has time out of the saddle for some serious indiscretions, but was the man of the moment to score the Sunshine Coast feature sprint. Ron Stewart had been meant to ride Fortunate Kiss in the $300,000 sprint but suffered a rib injury earlier in the day, so Tarrant was called into action with little notice. He pounced late to claim the Listed Glasshouse Handicap on Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans ' Victorian galloper Fortunate Kiss, who was surprisingly sent out the tasty odds of $26 after racing well for third in the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich at her previous start. Tarrant made sure he listened to Stewart's pre-race riding tips before conjuring a Glasshouse Handicap blowout, nailing runner-up Oughton ($26) and third-placed The Inflictor ($3.50). 'I only just picked the ride up, I just turned up and took Ronny's instructions … happy days,' Tarrant said. 'My instructions were to find some cover and produce her as late as possible. 'To be honest, I was a bit nervous coming into the straight. 'She will only improve off that and if there was another furlong we probably would have won by a furlong.' Sealed with a kiss! 😘 Fortunate Kiss takes out the Listed TAB Glasshouse at @SCTurfClub! A big win for Luke Tarrant and @KennewellRacing! Another @Kiaarn pick of the yard wins at $26 ðŸ'¥ â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2025 Stable representative Ross O'Sullivan said he was surprised six-year-old mare Fortunate Kiss was sent out at such big odds. 'Off her last start, I thought she was 'overs' today and I was quite surprised when the prices went up,' he said. 'She pulled up well from her last start and hasn't missed a beat the whole way here. 'Luke rode her perfectly. 'He didn't really pass a horse and that was a perfect ride for a pick-up. 'I know Ronnie (Stewart) is a bit disappointed. 'He was looking forward to riding her, but these things happen.' Of the beaten brigade, hobby trainer and truck driver Craig Cousins was more than happy with the third-placed finish of The Inflictor who was backing up from winning a Listed race at Eagle Farm seven days earlier. He said his stable star would now go for a break. Ciaron Maher galloper Warnie has started favourite in both of his runs in Queensland but again finished unplaced, grabbing fourth in the Glasshouse. Matt Dunn's sprinter Boom Torque started $51 but was making an electric surge late before being chopped out and finishing 11th in a luckless run. The Sunshine Coast finally got some luck with its feature winter carnival meeting after many major meetings at Corbould Park in recent years have been impacted by rain and bad weather. But the Sunshine Coast Turf Club was delighted with drawing a bumper crowd under fine skies. â– â– â– â– â– Overfull flies to victory Peter Robl 's three-year-old filly Overfull has been here, there and everywhere. But she returned to the scene of her first race start to capture the $200,000 Dr Bernie Spilsbury 3YO Handicap (1000m) on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. After winning her debut on the Sunshine Coast in February last year, Overfull has ventured far and wide and raced at tracks including Moonee Valley, Flemington, Scone and Rosehill. The Gold Coast-based filly has had just as many races interstate as she has at home in the Sunshine State. But it was fitting that Overfull returned to the Sunshine Coast to score the race named after long-serving club doctor Bernie Spilsbury who is retiring. Originally purchased for just $14,000, the filly banked another $116,000 in prizemoney and added to her reputation as she fought off all challengers in the final stages. Overflowing with grit! ðŸ'° A brave win to Overfull over the 1000m at @SCTurfClub for @RoblRacing and @_damienthornton! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2025 'She's been an unbelievable filly for the stable,' Robl said. 'I think throughout her career she has only put in one bad run, at Flemington. 'She's travelled to Melbourne, she's travelled to Sydney and come race day she just puts in 100 per cent every time. 'No disrespect to anyone but I thought today's race was probably two lengths inferior to what she had been running in, and with 53 (kg) on her back I was pretty confident today that she'd be winning.' Meanwhile, bargain basement buy Earn To Burn produced a tough win for trainer Jack Bruce and jockey Luke Dempsey in the Bruce McLachlan Classic 2YO Handicap (1000m). Earn To Burn broke his maiden at Toowoomba in May and then was far from disgraced when being beaten four lengths at Listed level at Eagle Farm last month. The youngster who cost just $7000 at last year's Gold Coast National Yearling Sale showed he was up for a fight when he went head to head with Jaggery on the Sunshine Coast and narrowly prevailed. One for the locals! Earn To Burn fights like a tiger to win the third for Sunshine Coast trainer Jack Bruce ðŸ'¥ðŸ¯ @luke_dempsey @JackBruceRacing â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 5, 2025 Earn To Burn started a well-fancied $6 chance in a race where $2.80 favourite Prestar finished third after being out in the cheap seats from a wide barrier. 'He's always been a handy horse and I tried to get him ready for The Debut early on, but it was probably all a bit much too soon but he has come back well after a break,' Bruce said. 'He has probably overdone it in some Stakes races from wide barrier draws. 'When he drew wide again today I was a bit worried but he was well ridden and he's tough. 'It was really good to get a result with him for the talented two-year-old that he is. 'We just needed to find the right race and get it done.'

Stuart Kendrick confident Redford can bowl out Warnie in Glasshouse Handicap at Sunshine Coast
He's the $1m gelding who must bowl over warm favourite Warnie to win the $300,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m), although trainer Stuart Kendrick is quietly confident Redford can put his rivals in a spin on his home track on Saturday. Bookmakers have rated four-year-old gelding Redford as a $16 chance in the Glasshouse, with the Ciaron Maher -trained Warnie the $2.90 favourite ahead of cult gelding The Inflictor ($4.80) and soft-track specialist Far Too Easy ($7.50). • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'If he can find his feet, get a little bit of space and then wind up, that's when he's at his best,' Sunshine Coast trainer Kendrick said on Friday about Redford. 'He's got a good record here (3:2-1-0) and I think the track suits him. He's not an overly big horse so a drop in the weights is definitely going to help us. 'With the awkward gate (11 of 13) he'll probably go back and with a light weight, it gives him a chance to really hit the line strongly.' Kendrick is wary about quality import Warnie, a Listed winner in Ireland, who he thinks will also be suited to the spacious Sunshine Coast track, which is likely to be in the Soft 6 range on Saturday. 'He looked out of his comfort zone at Ipswich the other day (fifth in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes over 1350m) and this track will suit him where he can find his feet, wind up and have the last crack at them,' Kendrick said. 'Going on his run two races ago (third in the Group 2 Moreton Cup over 1200m at Eagle Farm), he's probably the one to beat.' TFI Racing paid just over $1m for Redford, part of the Arrowfield Stud draft, at the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast and he was initially trained by Annabel Neasham. Kendrick and several others, including his wife Trudy, took over the ownership last year and Redford won his first race for his new trainer last September in a Benchmark 60 (1300m) at Corbould Park. The highlight so far came in January this year when Redford upset odds-on favourite Moravia to win the $250,000 Magic Millions Rising Stars (3YO, 4YO colts and geldings division) at the Sunshine Coast. 'He was quite an expensive yearling but he's been good for us since we've had him,' Kendrick said. 'Hopefully he can do something big for us tomorrow (Saturday), that'd be nice.'

The Inflictor break delayed with wet weather convincing trainer Craig Cousins to tackle Glasshouse Handicap at Sunshine Coast
Truck driver Craig Cousins was driving past the Sunshine Coast on another rainy day in southeast Queensland this week when the hobby trainer suddenly realised it would be madness to send in-form gelding The Inflictor for a spell. Instead the cult galloper will back up in the $300,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on Saturday when the Queensland winter carnival draws to a conclusion. The Inflictor, who has collected more than $600,000 in prizemoney, will run just seven days after winning the $160,000 Tattersall's Mile at Eagle Farm, with Rachel King on board. Cousins said immediately after the victory that the four-year-old would have a well-deserved rest. So what changed his mind? 'He was going for a break but he hadn't gone to the paddock,' Cousins said on Wednesday. 'I drove past the Sunny Coast on Monday morning for work and I went 'hmmm, it's raining, he likes the wet' and there you go. 'When I saw the noms I thought 'that race (the Glasshouse) isn't going to be any stronger than what he beat last week'. 'I'm not going to say the 'S (spell) word' but he'll definitely go for a break after this race. 'Every time I mention that 'S word' they don't race well.' THE INFLICTOR! The Stradbroke fairytale galloper holds on for a gritty win under @RachelK11 in the Tattersall’s Mile! ðŸ† What a win for Craig Cousins & connections ðŸ' — RaceQ (@RaceQLD) June 28, 2025 Not only does The Inflictor love the sting out of the ground, he also enjoys galloping on the Corbould Park race track. On soft tracks he has a superb record of four wins and four placings from 10 runs and although he's yet to salute at the Sunshine Coast, he's been runner-up three times and finished third on two occasions from five races at the track. 'One time he got beaten by King Yoshi, who's not the worst horse in the world, on a heavy track and the other time was Termagant (on a soft track in July last year),' Cousins said. 'He hasn't been beaten by slouches and he's never been out of the placings at the track. 'He's drawn barrier nine, which is perfect for him, and his blood tests were done on Tuesday and he's fine.' Jag Guthmann-Chester will steer The Inflictor on Saturday, with regular rider Cejay Graham enjoying a holiday in New Zealand while she serves a suspension incurred on Stradbroke Handicap Day last month when The Inflictor finished 11th in Queensland's premier race. Graham copped a 14-day suspension for careless riding on King Kapa in the Hinkler Handicap. Nash Rawiller guided The Inflictor to victory in a Benchmark 85 (1350m) at Doomben on May 24 but he will be riding in Rockhampton this Saturday. The Ciaron Maher -trained Warnie is the current $3.20 favourite in Glasshouse betting markets ahead of The Inflictor ($4.80) and The Kosciuszko champion Far Too Easy ($6), who also thrives on soft tracks (6:5-1-0). Cousins said the $1.5m Listed Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on October 11 would be the next target to kickstart The Inflictor's spring campaign.

Jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor is Hopeful of winning feature race success at Sunshine Coast on Saturday
He captured the Glasshouse last year and gun jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor is hopeful of adding the Caloundra Cup and Winx Guineas to his trophy cabinet on Saturday. Wilson-Taylor was in a race of his own in last year's Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m), with the Anthony and Sam Freedman -trained Punch Lane revelling in heavy conditions to win by almost three lengths. This year, Wilson-Taylor will team with his good mate, trainer Stuart Kendrick, aboard Italian Riviera in the $300,000 Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) and Redford in the Glasshouse. He has also answered the call from Annabel and Rob Archibald to ride imported stayer Hopeful in the $300,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m). Despite not having won since capturing the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) back in April 2022, Hopeful showed last start a return to the winner's stall wasn't far away with a fast-finishing third behind Sir Lucan and Bear On The Loose in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on June 14. 'I was fortunate enough to win the Glasshouse last year, so I'd like to either win that again or hopefully a Cup,' Wilson-Taylor said at Tuesday morning's Caloundra Cup day Breakfast With The Stars. 'It should run really well, Hopeful … he was really good in stakes company last start in Sydney. 'Obviously the favourite Bear On The Loose is $4 and we're something like 15-1, so we're good value and you're certainly going to get a good run for your money if you follow that horse, that's for sure.' What a finish at Rosehill! Sir Lucan fights off Bear On The Loose to win the Listed Winter Cup! â'ï¸ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 • Italian Riviera has been backed from $51 into $26 in TAB's fixed odds market for the Winx Guineas and Wilson-Taylor was brimming with confidence in the lightly-raced galloper after riding him in work at the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday. 'Stu is obviously my biggest supporter so it would be good to win a Winx Guineas for him – and I think he's got the right horse to do it,' Wilson-Taylor said. 'His horses excel here on this track and Italian Riviera, he's been going terrific. On quality, it's probably not the best edition of the Winx Guineas so it certainly puts us right there I think.' A canny $60,000 purchase at the 2023 Inglis Classic Sale, Italian Riviera has already returned more than $80,000 in prizemoney for his connections with four wins from just eight starts. After winning the Glasshouse last year, jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor is aiming to add the Caloundra Cup and Winx Guineas at Sunshine Coast on Saturday. 🎥 via @eddiefranklin47 — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) July 1, 2025 He was most impressive under 60.5kg when powering home to win a Benchmark 68 at Doomben on June 24 and Kendrick said the Shalaa gelding had 'trained on terrific' since. 'I really like this horse (Italian Riviera). He's won four from eight, he was very impressive with a big weight last start in Brisbane, had to come from the tail and got over the top of them and won well,' Kendrick said. 'He's got to improve obviously up to this level but on what he's shown us in his work since, he has. 'We worked in well with Kyle so he'll ride – he was on him there this morning in his work and was very impressed with him. 'We gave him a little tick-over trial there last week and he won that impressively as well, so everything has sort of ticked over well … we just need a little bit of luck on the day.' Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick has a big team heading to the Caloundra Cup meeting on Saturday, headlined by Italian Riviera and Redford. 🎥 via @eddiefranklin47 — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) July 1, 2025 While Redford is a $34 outsider in early betting for the Glasshouse, Kendrick warned punters not to write off the Snitzel gelding, who's won five of his 11 starts. 'He (Redford) is definitely a lightweight chance in the Glasshouse. He won here really well in one of the big Magic Millions races – he just had no luck around Ipswich last start,' he said. 'He loves the sting out of the track, he loves this big long straight so with no weight on his back I think he's a really good each-way chance in it.' Kendrick is also expecting strong runs on Saturday from Defiant Spirit and Bews in the Provincial Sprinters Series (1200m) as well as Bonded Affair in a Benchmark 70 over 1200m. @kendrickracing1! @BrisRacingClub — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 17, 2024 • 'Defiant Spirit – his first-up run off a long break was excellent in Brisbane. He had to do all the hard work in front and held on really well. (The) Form out of that's good and he should have improved form that. 'We've got him as well as Bews, he's also in the provincial sprint series, so they're both really good chances. 'And Bonded Affair, I couldn't have been more impressed with his first-up win the other day. We've just worked out that this horse needs to be ridden really quiet and that's how we'll ride him again on Saturday. If he gets the breaks I think he'll run really well.'
