Donegal crash: Mother and daughter who died named locally
A mother and daughter who died following a road crash near Carndonagh, Co Donegal on Wednesday evening have been named locally. Six-year-old Ella McLaughlin was fatally injured when the car in which she was a rear seat passenger collided with a van on the R240 road at Glentogher at around 6.30pm. Her mother, Natalie McLaughlin, a nurse in her 20s who was driving the car, was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. However, she died from her injuries on Thursday afternoon. Two other people remained in hospital on Thursday evening following the crash. All four people who were in the car are understood to be members of the same family unit. Photograph: Joe Dunne/North West Newspix Cllr Martin McDermott, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council's Inishowen Municipal District, said he knew the family and that the loss of the mother and daughter was 'just devastating'. 'The loss of anybody on our roads is difficult for any community to take,' the Fianna Fáil politician said. 'But the loss of a mother and daughter, particularly given the fact that they are so young, is even more poignant and more difficult to accept.' Mr McDermott said people from the area were 'just numb' after learning of the two death and 'there is very little I can add to that other than to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers'. The deaths of the mother and daughter brought the number of fatalities on Co Donegal's roads so far this year to 10. Fr Con McLaughlin, parish priest in Carndonagh, said he went to Altnagelvin Hospital to be with those injured in the crash and would never forget the sadness in the emergency department. 'You had doctors and nurses running around trying to do their best to help these poor helpless people,' he said. 'It is something I will never, ever forget. 'I just wanted to be a presence there for the family and I did not speak too much but I just wanted them to know that we are all there for them.' Fr McLaughlin said the people of Inishowen were sadly used to tragedies happening on the peninsula's roads. 'We can visualise how they must feel at this time and how the wider community feels,' he said. Donegal councillor Joy Beard said the 'entire community is just numb and once again just lost for words'. 'Inishowen has known more than its fair share of tragedy on its roads over the years and it has happened again.' The R240 was closed for a period on Thursday while a technical examination of the crash scene was carried out but reopened later in the day. The head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Donegal, Insp Seán McDaid, appealed for witnesses, particularly any road users who may have relevant camera footage, to contact Buncrana Garda station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

Woman in her 20s dies day after crash that killed girl, six, and injured two others
A woman in her 20s has died from injuries sustained in a crash in Co Donegal which also killed a six-year-old girl and injured two others. The collision, involving a van and a car, took place on the R240 at Carrowmore in Glentogher, Carndonagh before 6.30pm on Wednesday. Irish police said on Wednesday that a six-year-old child had died and several other people had been injured. On Thursday, they said that the driver of the car, a woman aged in her 20s, died after being transported for treatment at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Another girl, who was a rear passenger, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Royal Victoria Hospital. A man in his 30s, who was the front seat passenger, is also being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry. No other injuries were reported. An Garda Siochana is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. A spokesperson said: 'Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday July 2 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardai. 'Anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station at 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.' The road was closed overnight pending a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions were in place. The road has since reopened.

Cllr Doherty said the road in question has been the scene of previous fatal accidents. And here again now, a local family are having to face the terrible, terrible burden of losing a loved one." The parish priest in Carndonagh spoke of the shock and disbelief being experienced in the community. Fr Con McLaughlin told RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne that while he did not attend at the scene of the accident, he went straight to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, where the scene was "something that I think I'll never forget." "In the community there's a shock and a disbelief. Now one can only imagine what the family are going through and I witnessed the pain in the hospital last night. Advertisement "You see, pain is no stranger to the people of Inishowen as there have been so many tragic deaths. I remember being present in Buncrana when there was a series of multiple deaths there between 2005 and 2008. And once again, tragedy has struck our people, and I'm quite sure it revives many painful memories for many people. "I just can't find words to express how people will feel today and how I personally feel too having been involved in some of them in the past."

A second person has died following a road traffic collision in Carndonagh, Co Donegal on Wednesday evening. An Garda Síochána said the woman (20s) who was driving the vehicle died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast on Thursday. A six-year-old girl was fatally injured in the crash on the R240 road at Carrowmore, Glentogher, which involved a car and a van. Gardaí and the emergency services were alerted to the crash shortly before 6.30pm. Two others people who were travelling in the vehicle remain in hospital. 'Unfortunately locally here in Carndonagh at the turn of this year, we had the tragic loss of a young man. And here again now, a local family are having to face the terrible, terrible burden of losing a loved one...' A parish priest who rushed to hospital following the tragic crash said he would never forget the scenes in the emergency department. Fr Con McLaughlin attended Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry as soon as he heard about the incident in an effort to provide comfort for those involved. 'On hearing about the accident I went straight over to Altnagelvin Hospital and the scene (in accident and emergency) is something I will never forget,' he said. 'In the community there is a shock and a disbelief. One can only imagine what the family are going through and I witnessed that pain in the hospital last night. 'The scene in the hospital was just so, so sad. You had doctors and nurses running around trying to do their best to help these poor helpless people. It is something I will never, ever forget. 'I just wanted to be a presence there for the family and I did not speak too much but I just wanted them to know that we are all there for them.' Community 'raw with grief' after death of child in Co Donegal collision
Carndonagh Sinn Féin councillor Albert Doherty has said the local community was 'raw with grief' at the news of the death of a child who was a passenger in a car involved in a collision with a van on the R240 at Carrowmore, Glentogher, in Carndonagh on Wednesday evening. 'This tragic accident has just confirmed the terrible news that we heard after the accident. There's been one fatality, three seriously injured and our local community once again is raw with grief and our local community just feel devastated that once again a local family have been challenged and having to face the loss of a loved one, it's terrible news here.' Advertisement Cllr Doherty told RTÉ radio's Morning Ireland that conditions for driving at the timer had been favourable, but that the road in question has been the scene of previous fatal accidents. 'Unfortunately locally here in Carndonagh at the turn of this year, we had the tragic loss of a young man. We do hope that those who were taken to Altnagelvin, we do hope that there's a full recovery and we do offer to the family and the extended family our full support as a community. "And also I suppose I have to thank all involved in emergency response for their assistance with the family, and for the local community on this and on previous occasions.'
