Selena tribute concert and look-alike contest takes place this Saturday at Aurora's Global Fest

This Saturday, the City of Aurora will celebrate the legacy of Tejano music queen Selena at Global Fest. The one-day festival is Aurora's signature event championing its many cultures. A young musician who grew up in Aurora is excited to perform the tribute to the iconic star. Selena by Mayra Alejandra "Aurora is amazing, I love Aurora. It has all different types of people," said Mayra Alejandra. Performing at Global Fest is a dream come true for Alejandra. And it's her belief that Selena too would have loved taking the stage at the celebration of international cultures. "Her goal was to unite. And this unites people, and that's what we need more than ever right now. We need unison. We need each other," added Alejandra. She admires how Selena overcame barriers and stayed true to herself, when others tried to limit her. "Her music, it just, it makes me so happy and it makes everyone happy. Including the beats, the lyrics, they each have like a message, a happy message," said Alejandra. Selena by Mayra Alejandra She says it stands to reason that Selena maintains such a hold on our culture, even 30 years after her death. She feels shaped by Selena herself and understands why others derive so much joy from her tribute performances. "She was full of love and compassionate and so down to earth that people could relate to her," said Alejandra. "She's a star that was shining her own light, she was a true star." Performing as Selena -- says Mayra Alejandra -- is about sharing happiness. Global Fest will also feature a Selena look-alike contest. CBS Colorado is excited to be a sponsor. Your Aurora reporters will be there. Global Fest takes place this Saturday June 14 from 11AM to 6PM at the Aurora Municipal Center's Great Lawn. Find out more at CBS

Aurora police use real time information center to boost officer, public safety

The Aurora Police Department has a new resource designed to enhance both officer and community safety: the Real Time Information Center. The Aurora Police Department's Real Time Information Center. CBS Housed inside police headquarters, the center leverages citywide technology like surveillance cameras, drones, license plate readers, and crime data into one centralized hub. From there, trained staff can monitor activity in real time and relay critical updates directly to officers in the field. "We want to make sure that we have officers on the ground. We also have eyes in the sky," said Agent Matthew Longshore. "Our techs can manipulate cameras, zoom in, scan areas, and provide officers with real-time details about suspects, vehicles, or activity tied to a call for service." For instance, if a stolen vehicle triggers a license plate reader, staff can quickly locate the car on nearby cameras, identify any unique features, and pass that intel to officers before they arrive on the scene. They can provide vehicle descriptions, behavior patterns, and even track suspects leaving an area. CBS Colorado's Tori Mason at the Aurora Police Department's Real Time Information Center. CBS "We want to make sure that we have knowledgeable, professional people in here who can do the job effectively. They are the first line of defense for our officers on the road. They're able to see things before the officers can see things," said Longshore. Aurora's upcoming Global Fest will be the largest event to date, and it will be supported by the Real-Time Information Center. Operators will be monitoring cameras throughout the festival grounds and the surrounding area. "We want to make sure that people attending, performing, selling things, our vendors, feel safe and supported," said Longshore. "We've increased our staffing, both seen and unseen. We're going to have our special units out there, some of them in plain clothes." While there have been no specific threats, Longshore says the department is proactively increasing security presence as a precaution. The Aurora Police Department's Real Time Information Center. CBS The department is still expanding the center's capabilities. Six stations are available inside, and staffing levels adjust depending on crime patterns and major events. Data is continuously being analyzed to determine the most effective hours of operation and deployment.

Experience 30 countries without leaving Wisconsin at West Bend's Global Fest June 28-29

Anyone who lives in the Milwaukee area should consider traveling to West Bend for the city's newest event, Global Fest, encouraged Noelle Braun, Downtown West Bend Association executive director. Braun said she is "super proud" Milwaukee features so many festivals and cultures in the summer, but now West Bend will have its own cultural festival. "We are excited to celebrate cultures and celebrations around the world," she said. Global Fest will take place 2 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The festival includes food, entertainment, craft and other vendors. Braun said more than 30 nations will be represented for these two days, including Afghanistan, Morocco, Ecuador, Ghana, Germany and France. Entertainment at Global Fest in West Bend will include singers, dance groups and other kinds of authentic music. This includes Adzrowo African Drumming (Ghana), Chinese Lion Dancers, Kojo (a Jamaican Reggae band); Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance; and Na Hale Studios: Angle & Malia (authentic Hawaiian music and dance). The entertainment will be at Old Settlers Park, 200 N. Main St., West Bend. On Saturday, there will be samples of international food for purchase from restaurants in downtown West Bend. These include food from Dooley's (Belgium); The Outbreak (Japan); The Norbert (Morocco), Brazen Head Pub (Ireland) and Gary's Place (Germany). On Sunday, there will be food trucks featuring food from different countries that include Fanna's on the Fly (the Netherlands); Sacred Bean Coffee Co. (Ecuador), Bowl & Batter (France and Germany) and No Pork on Your Fork (Middle Eastern). Braun said the vendors at Global Fest will feature items from other countries and fair trade items. For instance, one vendor, Sarwat Najib whose business is called Shamla Atelier fled her country, Afghanistan in 2021 and opened her design firm in Stevens Point. She creates high fashion dresses that mixed fashion from her country with Western fashion, according to the Stevens Point Journal. She will be one of the vendors on Sunday. Other vendors will feature items including African drums, India fabrics and spices, seasonings, teas and fair trade items from around the world. Global Fest also will have a raffle for a $1,000 travel voucher and a passport scavenger hunt. "We want people to discover West Bend," Braun said. "It's wonderful and welcoming."
