Undersecretary Yousif Mohammed Al Binkhalil Engages at WAVES Summit in India
New Delhi: Yousif Mohammed Al Binkhalil, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, took part in the inaugural World Audio-Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) held in India from May 1-4. The summit assembled artists, innovators, investors, and policymakers from around the world to explore the future and challenges in media, entertainment, and creative industries. According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Binkhalil also engaged in the Global Media Dialogue, which ran concurrently with the summit, featuring delegations from 77 countries and organizations. During his participation, Al Binkhalil highlighted the Kingdom of Bahrain's focus on the media sector, under the guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. He underscored the sector's role in fostering international ties through messages of tolerance and coexistence, vital for achieving prosperity and human wellbeing. Al Binkhalil reiterated the Ministry's dedication to participating in regional and international events centered on media and technology, to both showcase Bahrain's advancements and seize opportunities for skill development and innovation among youth. These efforts are aligned with Bahrain's broader sustainable development goals. He remarked that the summit provided a crucial platform for enhancing media cooperation and exchanging experiences to advance the national media system, especially amidst the rapid technological changes in the media sector and the growing influence of audiovisual and entertainment media, alongside challenges posed by artificial intelligence and digital technologies. The WAVES summit emerged as a key venue for convergence within the global media and entertainment industry, attracting over 10,000 attendees, 650 companies, and 1,000 creatives. The event addressed various facets of the industry, including film, television, radio, print media, broadcasting, news, new media, advertising, animation, visual effects, gaming and esports, AR/VR/XR technologies, and music. In addition to its expansive programme, the summit featured sessions, workshops, and seminars on crucial topics such as media globalisation, content creation and distribution's future, technological disruptions, and the evolution of electronic gaming. The event also included exhibitions, cultural performances, and a media marketplace.

Egypt calls for ethical standards for AI use in arts and culture during India-hosted Global Media Dialogue
Culture Minister Ahmed Fouad Hanno affirmed Egypt's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and protecting it from distortion, as well as promoting cultural justice through the integration of modern technologies. Speaking at the opening of the Global Media Dialogue during the 2025 World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES), which kicked off in Mumbai, India, on May 1, he emphasized that culture and arts are essential tools for realizing development and social justice. The minister called for international cooperation to establish ethical standards for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in culture and arts, ensuring content authenticity and respect for cultural contexts, according to a press release by the Culture Ministry on Friday 2/5/2025. He highlighted the summit's importance in fostering creative partnerships amid rapid technological changes, noting that India's rich cultural heritage makes it an ideal host. He stressed that Egypt's cultural policies prioritize youth empowerment, infrastructure development and the safeguarding of tangible and intangible heritage. Digital transformation, he noted, has democratized content creation, enabling marginalized groups—especially women, youth in remote areas, and cultural minorities—to share their stories globally and enhance cultural diversity. Hanno warned of AI's potential to falsify cultural content and alter collective memory, urging global vigilance and regulatory frameworks. He concluded by praising India's hospitality and the summit's professional organization, calling it a true platform for cultural and technological collaboration. WAVES 2025 is a four-day summit with tagline 'Connecting Creators, Connecting Countries'. It brings together creators, startups, industry leaders, and policymakers from across the world. At WAVES 2025, India is also hosting the Global Media Dialogue (GMD) for the first time, with ministerial participation from 25 countries, marking a milestone in the country's engagement with the global media and entertainment landscape. WAVES 2025 witnesses the participation from over 90 countries, with more than 10,000 delegates, 1,000 creators, 300+ companies, and 350+ startups. The summit will feature 42 plenary sessions, 39 breakout sessions, and 32 master classes spanning diverse sectors including broadcasting, infotainment, films, and digital media.

Ashwini Vaishnaw pitches for shared standards, clear rules for ethical use of AI
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday made a strong pitch for joint efforts by governments on shared standards and clear rules for ethical use of artificial intelligence . Addressing the Global Media Dialogue at the World Audio, Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) here, he said tie-ups between government, industry and creators has become indispensable as there was greater focus on local stories. The I&B Minister said the global media dialogue was anchored in creativity, culture and collaboration. "As a government, we must provide a fair chance for everyone to showcase their story to the world. We must incentivise local content promotion and enforce IP framework among other things," Vaishnaw said, addressing the Dialogue, attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Minister of State for I&B L Murugan, and representatives for several countries. Vaishnaw also said that governments must support policies that preserve and promote all cultural forms as they connect people across borders. "Focus is shifting towards local stories. We aim to build people-to-people and country-to-country exchanges," he said. "Tie-ups with government, industry and creators have, therefore, become indispensable. Practical steps include co-production treaties to ease licences and talent movement. We need joint funds for new tech, shared standards, and clear rules for ethical AI," Vaishnaw said. The minister said the media and entertainment industry was globally valued around USD three trillion dollars, but its true value was beyond numbers. "It lies in the empathy it creates. In the ideas that it conveys. And in the future it helps us imagine," Vaishnaw said.

Nations adopt ‘WAVES Declaration' for cross-border collaborations in media and entertainment
MUMBAI: India hosted the first Global Media Dialogue in Mumbai on Friday, marking a milestone in the country's engagement with media and entertainment industries worldwide. Held during the ongoing World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES 2025), and organised by the ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B) and the external affairs ministry (EAM), delegates and senior officials from over 50 countries participated in the dialogue. Aimed at nurturing international collaboration, policy alignment, talent exchange and capacity building in media, the dialogue focused on the role of governments in fostering peace and harmony in an increasingly globalized media environment. It culminated in the adoption of the 'WAVES Declaration' by the member nations. In the declaration, member countries pledged to encourage more people-to-people, culture-to-culture and country-to-country exchanges, by championing media and entertainment as a channel for dialogue. They committed to support choice, access and affordability in media consumption; and pledged to uphold content that respects human rights, and cultural sensitivities while fostering cross-border collaborations. In his welcome address, I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underlined how culture inspires creativity which connects people across borders. He said that content creation and consumption is changing fast as technology is reshaping the way we tell stories. 'We are at an inflection point where we need to incentivize local content creation,' he said. Welcoming delegates from 77 countries to Mumbai, Vaishnaw put stress on the crucial role of collaborations, and asserted the need to focus on co-production treaties, joint funds and a commitment to bridge the digital divide and foster global peace and harmony. Calling WAVES 2025 a microcosm of the global community, external affairs minister S Jaishankar, referred to the broad contours of the Global Media Dialogue 2025, throwing light on the world order – with a strong cultural dimension -- undergoing transformation. 'It is essential that we give voice to our traditions, heritage, ideas, practices and creativity,' he said, adding, 'It is equally crucial to make young talent ready for an age of creative collaborations through relevant skill development.' Jaishankar continued, in the age of AI, 'while the possibilities are beyond imagination, yet there is a need for a responsible use of emerging technologies while reducing bias, democratizing content and prioritizing its ethics'. 'For a global workplace and global workforce, there is need for shifts in mindsets, frameworks, policies and practices,' he said, expressing confidence in WAVES as a platform to deliberate on the key issues before the global media and entertainment sector. Several member nations shared their concerns on the need to enhance 'responsible journalism', which they said could be addressed by mutual collaborations on the forum of WAVES.

WAVE Summit rightly represents a microcosm of the global community, including content creators, policy makers, actors, writers, producers & visual artists,' EAM Jaishankar wrote on X. Jaishankar highlighted that, 'World order under transformation today has a strong cultural dimension. Equally essential that we give voice to our traditions, heritage, ideas, practices and creativity.' Jaishankar said that physical logistics, alongside digital connectivity, is vital for creating a global workforce. 'For a global workplace and global workforce, there is an accompanying need for shifts in mindsets, frameworks, policies, and practices. Crucial that young talent is made ready for an age of creative-coms, creative sports & creative collabs through skills diffusion,' he stated. He added that Artificial intelligence holds numerous possibilities, and all new advancements come with their own challenges, as AI is bringing about deep changes in various domains. So will be reducing bias, democratizing content and prioritizing its ethics,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated WAVES 2025 on Thursday. More than 10,000 delegates, 1,000 creators, 300+ companies, and 350+ startups participate from over 90 countries. The four-day event began on May 1 and will continue until May 4. WAVES 2025 is India's first-of-its-kind international summit dedicated to the audio-visual and entertainment sectors.
