Princess Charlotte 'marked end of centuries-old tradition' that Princess Anne suffered

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A "centuries-old" royal tradition that once affected Princess Anne's place in the line of succession was finally overturned with Princess Charlotte, thanks to a pivotal Act of Parliament. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her eldest son Charles immediately ascended to the throne. His firstborn, William, stepped up as the next in line, with his offspring, Prince George, as his heir. This marked the first occasion in nearly a century that Britain saw both a male sovereign and his male heir. Historically, under a 1701 law, the throne would pass to the eldest male, sidelining any older sisters (a practice known as male primogeniture), but this outdated rule was rewritten in recent years, reports Gloucestershire Live. But with the introduction of the Succession to the Crown Act in 2013, the outdated "centuries-old, men-first tradition" was abolished. It ensured that Princess Charlotte wouldn't be bumped down the succession line by her younger brother, unlike Princess Anne who ranks below her younger brothers. (Image: undefined via Getty Images) Wesley Kerr OBE, an ex-BBC Royal correspondent, told Channel 5's Secrets of the Royal Traditions: "So, whereas Princess Anne, who's the second child of Elizabeth, is below all three of her brothers in the line of succession, Charlotte did not go down a place when Louis was born. "There's absolute equality between boys and girls. So, had Charlotte been the eldest, she would be the next monarch - a well-needed piece of modernisation." Royal historian Gareth Russell added that Queen Elizabeth believed there should be "no reason" why a female couldn't ascend to the throne, whilst BBC's Jennie Bond expressed that this alteration champions the cause for "striking out for the modern woman". Charlotte, who is the middle child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, follows her older brother Prince George and is followed by the youngest, Prince Louis. (Image: Getty Images) In recently celebrating her 10th birthday, a new image of Charlotte was released by her parents from her time in Cumbria. The royals' social media accounts featured this photograph with the caption: "Happy 10th Birthday Princess Charlotte." As reported by Sky News, William and Kate habitually engage their followers by sharing personal photos of their children, often captured by the Duchess herself. Following this, just over a week ago, another photo surfaced online—this time featuring young Prince Louis. This latest snapshot was taken by Josh Shinner and posted in celebration of the prince turning seven years old.

Clarkson's Farm star insists 'words matter' as they issue emotional plea

Harriet Cowan, the newest addition to Clarkson's Farm, has appealed to Amazon Prime Video viewers as new episodes of Jeremy Clarkson's popular farm show premiere. The latest series of Clarkson's Farm is being released in stages, with its eight-episode run spread over three weeks. The first four episodes were available on Amazon Prime Video from last Friday, and this week saw the release of two more instalments, Endgaming and Splurging, from the gripping fourth series. In the initial four episodes, viewers said goodbye to fan favourite Kaleb Cooper who set off on a national stand-up tour, leaving Jeremy in need of extra help at the farm. Enter Harriet Cowan, 24, the latest recruit at Diddly Squat Farm, reports Gloucestershire Live. Originally from Derbyshire, Harriet made an immediate impact at Clarkson's Oxfordshire farmstead by tidying up, fixing broken machinery, and even grooming Clarkson's unruly eyebrows – all documented on her TikTok account. Despite only appearing in a few episodes, Harriet quickly won over fans, although her time on the show was brief, ending when Kaleb's return caused tension. Following some tense exchanges after Kaleb's comeback, Harriet took to her rapidly growing Instagram account to make a heartfelt plea to viewers. Her heartfelt message struck a chord: "Please can everyone remember to be kind we are all human and your words matter." After her stellar appearance on the Amazon Prime Video series, Harriet's fans rushed to support her. One said: "Petition to get Harriet on Clarkson's Farm full time." Another commented: "Finally! ! Someone's going to sort Jeremy's eyebrows! So much love for that." The heartfelt praise continued as someone else wrote: "Just watched the first two episodes and WE LOVE HARRIET! ! ! Still love Kaleb. She is also hilarious! A welcome addition and an inspiration for my daughter watching with me. Well done.!". In the sweet moment on screen, she said goodbye to Jeremy, who said she had been a lifesaver. "You saved my life. So, if we get stuck again, can we give you a call?," he asked the trained nurse. However, as it stands, there are "no plans" that she will appear again in this series of Clarkson's Farm, or any potential future ones - sources close to the show have previously revealed. Since finishing her time on Clarkson's Farm, Harriet has jetted off with her friends to Spain to enjoy a break in the sunshine. She ditched the wellies, grabbed a bucket hat and a blue bikini, and spent some much-needed time away from the farm relaxing poolside - and shared a few snaps from her time away. Clarkson's Farm finale for season 4, featuring episodes Hurrying and Landlording, is set to broadcast on Friday, June 6. Although slated for a fifth series, Jeremy has announced they'll be taking a breather after season 5 concludes their five-year relentless run of filming on the farm.

Adam Henson supported by family as he makes heartbreaking farm admission

Countryfile star Adam Henson has opened up about the support he has from family and friends and how, over the years, he has faced some challenges while running the farm Adam Henson, known from BBC's Countryfile, has candidly spoken out about the hurdles he's encountered in both his professional and personal spheres. While not on screen, Adam is hard at work managing his family farm in the Cotswolds, a legacy started by his father Joe back in 1971. ‌ During an intimate chat with Reach PLC, Adam shared insight into the critical support provided by loved ones and friends, admitting that steering the farm has indeed presented numerous obstacles over time. ‌ Further delving into his private life, Adam disclosed the tough period following his wife Charlie's cancer diagnosis. Adam conveyed his natural optimism, saying: "My characteristics are that I am an upbeat person, and I have got an incredibly supportive family, wife and children and people around me.," reports Gloucestershire Live. Speaking of his professional dealings, he said: "And within the business, I have got a business partner who I was at Agricultural College with and he is one of my closest friends and what we do is surround ourselves with people that are excellent within their own role in the business. Whether that is a manager or a farm manager, and we work really closely with the team and we are all very honest and open with one another. ‌ "I have had some very difficult times in my life, both in business and personally. My wife was very ill a few years ago, my parents dying, and I lost a nephew." Sharing on how he's coped with these trials, he noted: "We have gone through foot and mouth challenges, Covid, and we have had some tough times, but I've never had poor mental health because I've had that fantastic support system around me." ‌ In an emotional disclosure, Adam and his wife previously opened up about the tremendous impact that the cancer diagnosis had on their lives. Back in 2021, the couple were confronted with the news they had been fearing when Charlie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. ‌ Charlie confided to the Daily Mirror, expressing the shock they felt: "It was both barrels," as she recounted the moment a significant tumour was discovered on her pancreas. "We knew people who'd died of pancreatic cancer, and I absolutely felt this was going to be the end of my life." Adam shared his own turmoil: "I felt physically sick," while Charlie recalled the overwhelming confirmation of their worries, saying: "Our darkest fears were confirmed. Adam had to practically carry me down the corridor. My legs were like jelly." The couple sought help from one of the nation's top specialists, leading to Charlie being slated for a risky surgery, with the outcome hanging in the balance. ‌ On the day, Adam described the emotionally charged atmosphere: "There were a lot of tears and a lot of emotion in the room." The family then travelled to London for Charlie's painstaking procedure, during which she prepared for the worst by penning final letters to Adam, their kids, and her siblings. However, two years on from those heart-wrenching times, Charlie has made steps towards normality, working part-time and living in anticipation of her six-monthly scans. Countryfile is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Pharmacist's thrush alert over key symptoms as cases set to surge

Thrush is a common fungal infection, affecting three quarters of women in the UK at least once in their lifetime Women are being urged to be aware of six red flags as an increase in thrush cases looms this summer. Health professionals are raising awareness about the condition, which affects three-quarters of UK women at least once. Pharmacist Amie Anand at Well Pharmacy Online Doctor said: "Thrush thrives in warm, damp conditions and can develop when the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disrupted. During the summer and especially when holidaying abroad, this balance can be affected more easily due to increased sweating, frequent swimming, and the general rise in temperature." ‌ She advised to avoid some clothing and favour others at this time of year. "To reduce the risk of thrush in the warmer months, it's important to wear breathable clothing, opt for cotton underwear, and avoid staying in wet swimwear for extended periods," she said. ‌ The rise in thrush infections during the summertime can be attributed to higher temperatures and lifestyle changes that lead to perfect breeding grounds for Candida yeast, reports Gloucestershire Live. "Recognising the symptoms of thrush early can help you seek the right treatment and avoid prolonged discomfort," Amie adds. "Typical symptoms include itching, irritation, or burning in the affected area, a thick white discharge, and redness or swelling." Left unchecked, thrush may cause increasing discomfort. Common symptoms include: Pain or discomfort during intercourse or urination (in cases of vaginal thrush) Redness and swelling Thick, white discharge with a texture similar to cottage cheese (in vaginal thrush) Itching, irritation, or burning in the affected area ‌ Six red flags to be aware of with thrush Heat and sweat Increased heat and sweat can lead to more sweating in areas like the vagina, underarms, and beneath the breasts. The pharmacist said: "High temperatures mean more sweating, especially in areas like the vagina, underarms, and beneath the breasts. This excess moisture can create the perfect warm, damp environment for yeast to multiply. Opting for loose, breathable fabrics like cotton can help reduce this risk." Damp and sweaty clothes Hanging around in damp swimwear or sweaty workout clothes too long creates a trap for moisture against the skin. The pharmacist said: "Long periods in damp swimwear or sweaty workout gear can trap moisture against the skin, disrupting the natural balance of bacteria and yeast. Candida thrives in warm, moist conditions, making it essential to change into dry clothing as soon as possible after swimming or exercise." ‌ Tight clothes Tight outfits and synthetic materials might look good but can be bad for your skin. The pharmacist said: "Wearing tight clothing, including non-breathable underwear, tights, or leggings, can trap heat and moisture against the skin, creating the ideal environment for yeast to thrive." Synthetic fabrics The pharmacist said: "Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are particularly problematic, as they lack the breathability of natural fibers like cotton or bamboo. Opting for looser, more breathable fabrics can reduce this risk significantly." Hormone changes Hormonal fluctuations from birth control or menstruation are two more issues to bear in mind. The pharmacist said: "Heat isn't the only factor – hormonal changes can also play a significant role. For some, hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle or from birth control pills can increase the likelihood of thrush by altering the vaginal pH, making it more likely to develop thrush." Diet changes Diet changes and increased sugar intake are also issues to pay close attention to. "Summer often brings BBQs, picnics, and sweet treats like ice creams, cocktails, and sugary drinks. High sugar levels can fuel yeast growth, as Candida feeds on sugar. Limiting sugar intake and incorporating probiotic-rich foods, like yoghurt and kefir, can help maintain a healthier pH balance," the pharmacist said. Travel Finally, the pharmacist warned to take heed of travel and changing hygiene habits She said: "Travel or being away from home can disrupt routine hygiene practices, leading to more prolonged exposure to sweat or changes in pH levels from different water sources, personal care products, or unfamiliar bathroom conditions. Pack breathable underwear to stay fresh on the go."
