Picturesque Irish island without cars dubbed 'most peaceful place in Europe'
A stunning Irish island where cars are banned has been hailed as the "most peaceful place in Europe". Hidden away off Ireland's western coastline lies Inis Meáin, a tranquil retreat that frequently gets overshadowed by its better-known neighbours Inis Mór and Inis Oírr. The trio collectively forms the Aran Islands. Each provides a serene escape from contemporary life without the vehicles or tourist hordes typical of most holiday spots, whilst delivering visitors sweeping rural landscapes and breathtaking vistas. Go Wild Magazine claims Inis Meáin offers travellers a taste of Ireland "as it was meant to be experienced". The island houses roughly 184 residents, making it the most sparsely populated of the three. A chiefly Irish-speaking settlement, it once served as home to dramatist J. M. Synge. Inis Meáin has been characterised as a "precious sanctuary of Irish Cultural tradition", reports RSVP Live. The small number of motor vehicles on the isle provide vital services or handle deliveries. Holiday-makers on the island typically get about on foot, by pushbike, or even via horse-drawn carriage. Upon arrival, guests can discover the magnificent landscape and lichen-adorned stone barriers that have been constructed across the centuries. One of the highlights is Synge's Chair, a cliffside perch said to have been frequented by the playwright as he observed the Atlantic waves battering the coastline. Visitors pausing for a moment at this spot can anticipate the sounds of seabirds gliding overhead. The cliffs are a major attraction, providing breathtaking views of Inis Mor and The Cliffs of Moher. During the winter, the waves can even surpass the 150ft rockface that forms the cliff. It boasts an unusual D-shaped structure, unlike the traditional round forts, and offers a panoramic view of Galway Bay. The second fort, Dún Crocbhur (Conor's Fort), is a remarkable dry-stone fort that has been declared a National Monument. It is situated at the highest point of Inis Meáin and can be seen from various points around the island. Inis Meáin also features a collection of pristine beaches, with Ceann Gainimh's white sands and crystal-clear waters. The island is also a fashion hotspot, housing the Inis Meáin Knitting Company that exports garments to enthusiasts as far away as New York or Tokyo. Visitors can reach the island either by ferry or plane. A mini-bus service is available to transport guests to their accommodation.

Greatest quarterback of all time Tom Brady set to speak of ‘proud' Cavan roots on season finale of RTÉ's Late Late Show
Today at 11:58 Multi-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady is set to star on tonight's season finale of The Late Late Show to lift the lid on his Cavan ancestral roots. The 47-year-old reached the summit of American football on seven separate occasions throughout a glittering career spanning more than two decades. That trophy-laden career brought with it fame and no shortage of riches, most recently in May 2022 when arguably the sport's greatest quarterback of all time penned a 10 year deal with Fox Sports for an eye-watering $375 million. And while those figures are not expected to be up for discussion this evening, what is likely to take centre stage is his familial connection to Cavan. Brady's paternal family hailed from Milltown, with his father Tom snr and Galynn having paid a visit to the north Cavan village in July 2023. His great great grandfather John Brady fled Ireland during the potato blight in the mid-1800s before settling in Boston where he found work as a labourer. It was there he met and set up home with his wife to be Bridget Bailey, a base from where his great great grandson would go on to enjoy the bulk of his professional playing career with under the guise of the New England Patriots. In an interview with Go Wild Magazine in August 2020, Brady spoke of how much his Irish ancenstral roots meant to him. 'My father is 100 per cent Irish. We took a trip over there together and visited some of the places where my family came from,' he said. 'That was a great experience for me and obviously, I am very proud of my Irish roots.' He added that he is also fond of Scotland and urged Americans to take a trip across the Atlantic to give themselves a 'sense of history'. He said: 'I've been golfing in Ireland and Scotland as well. I've really enjoyed my time over there. Anyone who's been over to that part of the world comes away with a greater sense of history. I know this will be a great experience for the players.' Brady, who is making his Late Late Show debut will, according to a spokesperson from the RTÉ show, be "reflecting on his illustrious career and life beyond the field". "In an exclusive interview, Tom will open up about how he fought his way to the very top of American Football, earning the title of greatest of all time. He also will discuss his Irish roots and his deep connection to Ireland," the spokesperson said.
