Volunteers from GA, VA help Morganfield tornado victims

MORGANFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) – It's been more than a week since a tornado came through Union County, and the reminders of what it left behind still litter properties. Just two miles southwest of Morganfield, several organizations offered a helping hand and are working to get lives back on track. Lives were turned upside down on May 16, when Union County homes were no match for winds peaking at 155 miles per hour. Since then, some homes have stayed relatively untouched. Morganfield native coordinates event to remember passed loved ones for 13th consecutive year There's still debris lying around, trees are down and homes are literally broken. It's enough for some volunteers to step up, roll up their sleeves and be of service, including Bill Gilbert on behalf of Cedar Crest Church in Acworth, Georgia. Gilbert and a couple of others are helping homeowners return to a sense of normalcy in Morganfield, side-by-side with the organization Rebuilding Hope in Dalton, Georgia. They say they're here not only to tarp roofs and cut down trees, but to also empathize and listen to people's stories after such devastation in Union County. Danville, Virginia-based God's Pit Crew is also part of the cleanup team. Trump approves major disaster declaration for Kentucky While Triple A predicts 45 million Americans will be traveling for a vacation on Memorial Day weekend, the organization Volunteer West Mills of Martinsville, Virginia, will be found in Morganfield, where people are in need and their circumstances are dire. Cedar Crest Church, Rebuilding Hope and God's Pit Crew will spend several days this week cleaning up. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Recovery efforts are still going on, with a curfew in place to ensure everyone's safety. Through the end of the month, at least 50 members of God's Pit Crew will be assisting those in need each day, with any type of cleanup or support. God's Pit Crew to rebuild home for N.C. family after Hurricane Helene 'They will be on the ground serving, helping cut and remove damaged trees, debris, sitting and praying with families to just let them know that they're not alone, that someone is there to help and they'll be on the ground serving through May 31st,' said Carly Brashears, the Director of Media & Public Relations with God's Pit Crew. God's Pit Crew has already sent multiple truckloads of supplies, like its blessing buckets, filled with water, canned food, blankets, and many other necessary things, to those in the area. Being Parents. We didn't expect to see all of that happen,' shared Brandon Fisher. 'You want to be able to fix everything.
